The sporting talent which exists in abundance in Kilcorney N.S. divides its loyalty between Millstreet and Dromtarriffe. This year the green and gold are walking tall.
On the morning of Tuesday, January 13th 2015, the pupils of Kilcorney N.S. waited with unquenchable excitement for the arrival of Mark Ellis and the two trophies (oh, by the way William was coming too). A heavy blanket of sparkling snow enveloped the usual green pastures of Kilcorney and all approaching roads were near impassable. Still it snowed – snow – snow – snow – snow. Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1251 from Millstreet. Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this lovely seasonal Tuesday morning.
A Gala Family celebration was held at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Saturday night January 23rd, in Honour of Dr. Pat Casey. For the past 50 years Dr. Pat has been our devoted and dedicated medic, aided in no small way by his lovely wife Nora. As a single man when he came first, he set up his surgery at the Wallis Arms and by sheer coincidence he treated his first patient there on January 23rd fifty years ago. On behalf of our Community I want to congratulate Dr. Pat and Nora, on their wonderful achievement, Say a sincere word of thanks for their great care over all those years. And wish them many many years of health and happiness in the future.
The AGM of our town park was held recently, and as always the committee are set to add even further improvments and new features to this great facility. Work is already in progress at installing the open air GYM , and people of all ages can trim up in the out of doors while out for their walk.
At the monthly meeting of the Community Council which was held last week it was decided to hold their Awards Social on March 6th. When looking at historical maps of the Millstreet area from the 18th Century, we noticed that Kerry extended into Ballydaly and a totally detached part of Kerry was just north of Cullen. Intrigued having never heard of this, we did some research, this is what we found out:
“Referred to as the East Fractions, they were exclaves of the barony of Magunihy in County Kerry. They existed from the suppression of County Desmond in the sixteenth century until 1843, when detached parts were transferred by Richard Griffith under the Valuation of Lands (Ireland) Act 1836 to the adjoining baronies. The fractions were part of the MacCarthy Mór territory from which Magunihy was delimited.”
It is not fully clear as to extent of the fraction around Ballydaly. Officially it was just the townlands of Balldaly and Kippagh, but it is mentioned elsewhere in different places that the Ballydaly fraction included Coolanarney and Coomacheo, and the old maps would seem to support this. We have recreated the map below showing the Ballydaly Fraction and the [read more …] “When Ballydaly was once part of Kerry”
The staff of Penny Dinners have asked us to pass on their thanks to everyone in Millstreet who has contributed so generously to Anna’s Collection for Penny Dinners.
We have been absolutely stunned by people’s generosity. The amount collected so far, particularly over the Christmas period, has completely surpassed our expectations. It makes us very proud of our little town.
Thanks to the customers of Guy & Dolls, Colemans Centra and SuperValu. A big thank you to the staff, pupils and parents of Millstreet Community School who donated a staggering volume of goods. The photo shows Stephen and some of the Transition Years with just a small portion of what was collected.
We also have to thank the following people who have facilitated the collection and /or delivery:
Mary Murphy of Guys & Dolls • Mary & John Coleman and the staff of Coleman’s Centra • Joe Fitzgerald and the staff of SuperValu • Gerard Ryan of Millstreet Community School • TY students Millstreet Community School • Michelle O’Keeffe • Donagh Reardon.
Collection boxes are still in place in Colemans Centra, SuperValu and Guys & Dolls.
January is a very difficult month for Penny Dinners because the need is so great in this bitterly cold weather and donations dry up after Christmas. We did a delivery over the weekend and [read more …] “Anna’s Food Collection for Penny Dinners”
