The End of an Era in Millstreet?

It’s about twenty five years since the Sisters of the Infant Jesus left Drishane  Castle as their numbers began to get smaller, and vocations dried up. At the time they moved to the other side of town where they bought a house, renovated it extensively, named it Drishane House, and continued their mission. Alas time waits for nobody, and over time their numbers have dwindled further, to the point where only a few now remain in Drishane House. So it wasn’t with a huge surprise that Drishane House has been put up for sale, but it is a sad thought that the Drishane Nuns may no longer be in Millstreet. Details and photos of the sale are on Daft.ie.

The following is an extract on Sr.Florence from the ijs.ie website:

“As we are trying to become reacquainted with Sister Florence in a new invisible form, the whole of nature explodes into life proclaiming the joy of resurrection. Messages continue to pour in, taking the edge off our grief and giving glimpses into the life of Sr. Florence as a friend and mentor, teacher and principal, member of the Infant Jesus Sisters and O’ Sullivan family. No words can express our appreciation of your prayers, attendance at the removal and Requiem Mass, testimonies, tributes, beautiful flowers and support of every kind. It is difficult to share all the messages and memories that have come from the different corners of the globe. Hopefully, the resume of the following eulogy, written by a friend and co-worker, expresses the best of what we can say about Sr. Florence. “The dawn of the 19th February 2017 brought a very sad day not only for the O’Sullivan family but for the Infant jesus Sisters. It was a day when a leading and visionary light of the community was dimmed. This person was a religious sister with great foresight and her name will forever be etched in history of all our Infant Jesus schools. Thousands worldwide will remember her with sincere love and affection: her name is Sister Florence O’Sullivan. This beautiful sister was a wonderful friend to me for over 40 years. I write this with great sadness over the unimaginable loss of a very close friend. I used to phone her often to keep up her spirits. She never lost her sense of humour.During her teaching years and as Principal of the Convent in Klang she worked tirelessly in the field of education and laid a strong foundation for all her students. She was an inspiration to so many. She was always very kind to the less fortunate families and their children.Throughout her time in Klang Convent, she strove to improve their lives and if she could have built a tower she’d make sure that the poor came out on top. Her beautiful spirit will live on through the many lives she taught and touched. I admired how she never judged or forced her opinions on anyone, but offered valuable and truthful advice that I will surely miss.  It was such a comfortable and warm feeling to have known that we had such a lifetime friendship. My husband thought very highly of her and we shall always cherish the memories of her visits to our home and our trips to Ireland. My very dear Sr. Florence now rests in peace.” Flor’s response to all this would be: “You well know I aint no saint”! Yes, she was human after all, but, those of us who were gathered round her deathbed for the liturgy of her last fare well  before entering Eternal Life, saw her do so with serenity and dignity. The presence of so many, offering support and comfort during the next three days, was a testimony of her love for others and her strong emotional bonds with friends and family as she lived her vocation as an Infant Jesus Sister. “I am the Resurrection and the Life.Whoever believes in Me will never die” John 11: 25-26. Catherine O’Sullivan IJS “

*** Indicates Not a nun. There are three burials in the nuns plot that are nuns, and these are:

  • Michael McGrath was the wonderfully popular Gardener for decades in Drishane and he was buried in the Nuns’ Cemetery …. not along the main row…more nearer the hedge.   I remember him from my youth. – S.R.
  • Mary Teehan was a Dublin woman who was a nun for a number of years. She left the order and worked in the Catholic Communications Institute in Booterstown, Dublin. She used to come to Drishane every year for her holidays. She was immensely popular with everyone and some of the nuns used call her “Lady May”. It was her desire always, to be buried in Drishane. – L.F.
  • Marta del Valle was from Puerto Rico. She died in Texas. Her sister is an Infant Jesus Sister in Ballymun, Dublin where she runs the Aisling Project for disadvantaged children.  Possibly her ashes are interred here in Drishane? Here is her obituary: Marta Rosa del Valle, 59, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, March 15, 2013. Service: Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Tuesday, St. Francis of Assisi in Grapevine, Texas. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Lucas Funeral Home, 701 W. Wall St., Grapevine, with rosary at 7 p.m. Marta was born June 12, 1953, in Puerto Rico to Jose del Valle and Dolores Garcia. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Quico del Valle. Survivors: Her sister, Magdalena del Valle (infant Jesus sister); nephews, Rafael del Valle and wife, Danni, and Sergio del Valle.
(An article on Sr Malen del Valle is included below)

Its the third grave, about a metre wide by two metres long. [1901] [1911]

Sr. Malen del Valle IJS
On 18th April 2012 Sr. Malen del Valle IJS was presented with this award in recognition of her work with the Aisling Project, which supports young people’s education through its innovative after-school programmes in Ballymun. “Magdalena del Valle (abbreviated to Malen) was born in the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Islands. She grew up in a family of four, with two brothers and a sister and as a child enjoyed swimming, basketball and scout activities. She attended the Sacred Heart Convent School and enjoys meeting up with friends when she revisits her homeland.
At age seventeen Magdalena moved to Spain to live with her grandmother and to attend university. While there she came into contact with the Infant Jesus Sisters and, following graduation, joined the Infant Jesus Sisters taking the name Sister Malen. The next few years were spent teaching in Madrid, working as a School Principal in Bembibre, a mining town in the north of Spain, and subsequently running an after-school project in Barcelona. Sr. Malen then moved to Liverpool where she worked with a young team in collaboration with the Christian Brothers and ran retreats for secondary school students. Some years later she came to Ireland and started a similar project ‘Challenge for Life’. This work involved running retreats in schools all over Ireland.
In 1997, during a parish mission in Ballymun, one of the Principals of St. Joseph’s School asked Sr. Malen to initiate a service for local children who had dropped out of school. The Aisling Project began in a flat provided by Dublin City Council. It was prepared by volunteers and furnished by generous donations.
There are now five individual Projects operating in Ballymun. The main aims of the Aisling Project are to prevent early school leaving, to benefit the
community and to advance education by running an after-school intervention project for children at risk. This intervention provides purposeful activity including drama, music and swimming. The projects
take place Monday to Thursday 2.30pm to 6.00pm with a full three-week Summer Project during the month of July each year. The programme is
designed around the interests, needs and learning of the young people involved in the project.”
In her acceptance speech Malen paid tribute to all who have made this Aisling project possible over the years. [ijs]

Memories of Sr. Damien

The National Archives of Singapore have published a synopsis of an oral interview with Sr Damien Murphy (Also known as Sr Peggy), a Drishane Sister who trained in Drishane and worked in Singapore, the Philippines, Australia, before retiring to St Josephs in Cork. She gives her own story as well as bits and pieces of other Drishane nuns.

… Still ‘altogether’. Most of the Sisters in St Joseph’s have Alzheimer’s or have had a stroke. Eleven or 12 retired Infant Jesus Sisters live in St Joseph’s. All entered the convent at Drishane. Started for the missions. Most entered knowing they were going ‘foreign’ to the missions. Still had enough Sisters to run the boarding school at Drishane…
