We invite you to join us for Part One of a recent Darren Kealy’s Coaches day tour to the River Shannon and beyond. Here we share images of our arrival at Ballina, Co. Tipperary where some 51 people enjoyed a very warm welcome at the Lakeside Hotel from Manager, Eoin Little and his very friendly Staff who served delicious scones with coffee and tea. With William Fitzgerald as Driver of our coach and Charlie Drake as a very helpful Guide/Co-ordinator we then proceeded to the nearby very scenic Killaloe Harbour, Co. Clare where

we met James of the “Spirit of Killaloe” Boating Fleet who gave us such a splendid insight into what we were about to experience on our two hour Shannon river cruise. With a mixture of weather we all found the trip hugely uplifting and wonderfully enjoyable. Lots of interesting information on this truly beautiful part of Ireland may be viewed on www.discoverkillaloe.com . Part Two of our Tour Day will continue in a few days. (Seán)

As a teacher he has been renowned for the quality of his work, emphasised by the fact that he was asked to give lectures in universities in Cork and Dublin. Most in Millstreet know Seán through the schools, or through his tremendous work in the community with Millstreet Museum, LTV2, and more recently here on millstreet.ie, and his efforts in the community are appreciated by all. We wish him well with this transition, and we are sure that he’ll be as ever-present in the community as before.

A.U.L. 2A – Millstreet Celtic 4 Killowen 0 (Thursday 26th August)

Killowen’s first away fixture of the campaign ended in defeat as costly errors in the second period contributed to Millstreet’s victory. Despite a promising first half showing, Killowen faded badly in the final quarter, as Millstreet’s superior fitness and teamwork prevented any notions of a Killowen comeback. The Killowen line up featured new signing Jason Mc Carthy in midfield with experienced ‘keeper Eamonn Murphy resuming in goal. Millstreet opened with a number of long range efforts that didn’t trouble Murphy whereas Killowen’s main source of attack stemmed from Pa Bermingham’s excursions down the left wing. Millstreet had a goal disallowed for pushing in the area before Owen Braun set up Declan O’ Brien after 27 minutes but his effort was blocked. Debutant Mc Carthy tried his luck from long distance after 32 minutes, however, his powerful shot was straight at the opposing ‘keeper. The home side looked dangerous in attack as Killowen survived a scare before the interval, John Mc Donnell intervening to divert a goal bound shot to safety.

The width of the crossbar prevented Killowen from taking the lead in the 49th minute, O’ Brien’s superb free kick struck the woodwork as the lurking Dave Lynch was inches away from converting the rebound. The home side survived and struck for the opening goal three minutes later, a quick throw caught Killowen napping as the Millstreet centre forward burst past the covering defenders to finish with a low shot past the exposed Murphy. Moments later a powerful header was superbly tipped over by Murphy, but he was beaten again on the hour mark, a dreadful error in the heart of defence was punished with a clinical finish. Millstreet were also prone to the occasional lapse at the back, the home keeper did well to block a sliced clearance after Killowen had made headway up the right wing. However, it was his opposite number who was by far the busier. Millstreet were denied again by Murphy after 65 minutes, he showed great agility to palm a close range header away to safety. Millstreet’s ability to break at pace led to their third goal after 70 minutes. Killowen failed to make proper use of a free kick inside the oppositions half and were shorthanded as Millstreet advanced quickly to set up an opportunity that was converted from inside the area. The hardworking Braun had a header saved in the closing minutes before more sloppy defending from Killowen was punished with a fourth goal on the stroke of full time.

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1028 from Millstreet.

Fondest greeting dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this beautiful Tuesday morning the last day of August.

The beautiful weather continues to make work and play very enjoyable for everyone. For the past couple of weeks people are out picking blackberries, some for the very first time and seeking advice from the more experienced about how to make jam, the proper sugar to use, how to freeze them and so on. On the wider scale the grain harvesting is almost complete with returns as were seldom seen as good before, and prices up 50%, because of the drought in other countries. Everything else like silage, potatoes, vegetables etc. falls into the same line. The fine weather brought young and old out in the great out of doors to enjoy country walks, trips to the sea, or just messing around at home.

The schools are re-opening this week and for once the children have a fine summer to their backs as they face the confines of the classroom. And please be on the lookout for the extra traffic ,especially around schools, school buses and so on.

Heritage week was brought to a close here on Sunday when a bus tour organised by Tim Browne ,did a tour of some of the historical sights around Millstreet, with Fr. Sean Tucker as orator. taking in Knocknkilla Stone Circle, St John’s Well, Kerrymans Table. Kilmeedy Castle where they enjoyed a beautiful meal al fresco ,ably prepared by the ladies of the group. Then they took the mountain road over Bealac, to Ballydaly, where the group leader Fr. Sean Tucker pointed out the ancient buriel ground .

Then on to Mountleader House, again for another very interesting talk. The day ended with a rousing traditional session at Bob’s Bar in Kanturk. A truly excellent day, well done to the organisers and helpers.

The Millstreet Development Group are meeting regularly in an effort to keep our place on the map in spite of the recession. They will hold their AGM at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Wednesday September 15th. Please give them your full support at all times.

A note from Jerry Kelleher to say that the newly formed St. John’s Well football team Aubane will have their first outing in a match against Cullen at 6.30 in Millstreet on Saturday evening. The team is made up of players from Cloghoula and Kilcorney as well as Aubane. So please support it well.
