Easter Competition Millstreet Primary Schools Parents Association

Millstreet Primary Schools ‘Easter Nature Hunt’ Competition is open to all local Primary Schools, closing date Friday 2nd April 2021.

The children need to take photos of themselves with all the items to prove they have completed the Hunt, and send them into the Parents Assn’s Facebook page or email address, then completed entries will be entered into a draw on Saturday, for some lovely Goodies, just in time for Easter.  It means you don’t have to go rushing out to do this, just get your entry in by next Friday 2nd April evening to get into the draw.

Prizes have been sponsored by Herlihy Centra Millstreet and O’Keeffe’s Supervalu Millstreet, the Parents Association would like to say ‘Thank You’ for the prizes.

Eily’s Report – 23rd March

Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a chairde, and welcome to my weekly report.

This week I have to admit that I befriended the crow. I took pity on him,  (so few  people do)  I told myself that he has to have a life that he too wants to meet a partner, build a nest and rear a family as his forebears have been doing since time began. I like to give my spare food to the birds ,one crow waits on the wire and when I throw it out he will call all the others. They come in droves and in no time the place is picked clean. One fellow seemed a bit different from the others I don’t know why  but for the past number of days he had been hovering around a little lady crow. As the days went on they seemed to distance themselves from the main flock. At times he would do a little dance around her with one wing fanned out along the ground as he uttered some crow sounds. Just like you’d see on a David Attenborough program. Alas she often pretended she didn’t know he was there and she would eat her fill and wing it off to the next feeding ground over the hedge. But they must have reached an agreement because he was busy in my garden since then collecting dry matter to build his home in the rookery at the far off side of the valley. I couldn’t believe how far he had to go with his overpacked beak of his building material. ‘t’would  be over half a mile around the road but not to him, he took the route as the crow flies. They still come for my scraps, steal some of my birdseed and some day I imagine they will be back with a flock of their own to clean up my lawn.

What does St Patrick’s Day mean to you?

What does St Patrick’s Day mean to you?  Millstreet Parents Assn has asked the Primary School children that very question.

To some of us it can mean going to St Patrick’s Church for mass, meeting friends and listening to the wonderful music.  It maybe visiting family and going to the St Patrick’s Day Parade.

This year, sadly, we wont be able to do any Parades or go to Mass together, so instead of a Parade etc this year The Millstreet Parents Assn has invited the children from the Presentation N.S. and Scoil Mhuire B.N.S. to send in maybe a Photograph or Video of up to 20 seconds of who they want to wish Happy St Patrick’s day to (maybe someone out of the area or abroad they haven’t seen in a long time, or a relation they miss), perhaps play some music, or even have their own mini parade, even if they want to do a picture or Art, a poem, but the idea is for the children to say what St Patrick’s Day means to them.

The Parents Assn need all Photo’s/video’s and art pieces sent in by Friday 12th March 7pm and they will put them together for viewing in our own Primary Schools St Patrick’s virtual Parade on the 17th March.  By sending it in, it is accepted consent has been given to show the clips/art on the Facebook page of The Millstreet Parents Assn and other social media platforms, this way any wishes you want sending to people will be able to seen.

But this will only work if the children take part, so let prove that St Patrick’s Day is still special to everyone.

Any help or suggestions?

This is a long shot but I have a question for you.
My Grandparents lived in Meenskeehy, Derrinagree. Their names were Daniel and Nora (nee Desmond) Cronin. He died circa 1934 and she died December 27 1963.
They are buried in Nohoval cemetery.
I have looked at records available to me online but I cannot find where exactly they are buried.
I am wondering where records of their deaths would be recorded.
I appreciate any help or suggestions you would have for me.

Mallow Credit Union’s Christmas donation to Cork SVPs

Many families will face impossible choices this Christmas and requests from families to SVP are expected to exceed 160,000 this yearIt’s been a difficult year for St Vincent de Paul too, whose traditional fundraising efforts have been thrown into chaos with their SVP shops closed for so long and collections interrupted.

The board of Management at Mallow Credit Union felt that their annual Christmas donation to the SVP was more important than ever and wanted to show their support to the tireless efforts of the SVP. It was agreed to support the SVP groups within Mallow Credit Union’s Common Bond, with a total of €5,000 being donated across North Cork & West Limerick.

Tomas O Neill, CEO of Mallow Credit Union said “We have a long-standing relationship with the Saint Vincent de Paul in our areas and see just how much of a positive impact they have to the lives of families in our community each year. We are grateful to be able to continue to support their fundraising efforts this year and would like to wish all the SVP staff and volunteers a happy Christmas & peaceful New Year.”

Noreen O’Connor (née O’Leary), West End, Millstreet and Catskills, New York, U.S.A.

Nora O’Connor, age 90, passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2020 with her family at her side. She was born and raised in Millstreet, County Cork, Ireland. She later went to school in England, and trained to be a nurse before moving to New York to live with her aunt, where she continued with her nursing career in Jamaica, Queens. Nora married Daniel O’Connor on January 19, 1960 and moved to the Catskills, where they bought Elsie’s Brass Rail. They ran the bar during the 1960s and 1970s as “O’Connor’s Brass Rail”. Nora’s kitchen was always open for a cup of tea or one of her famous hamburgers at lunchtime. Her summers were spent caring for the many families that came to spend their vacations at the resort. After selling the Brass Rail in 1980, Nora went back into nursing. She worked at the Holy Name Academy, cared for retired Mercy Care Nuns, and later worked at Mercy Care – St. Peter’s in Albany. Nora retired from nursing in 1995 to enjoy her pride and joy-her grandchildren. There was always a cookie after school at Nana’s. Nora always enjoyed traveling “back home” every other Christmas to Ireland with her children, and in later years traveling to weddings of her nieces and nephews. Upon retirement, Nora enjoyed many bus trips sponsored by St. John’s with her good friends, Mary Fitzgerald, Marylyn Mahoney, Francis Reinhardt, and Ann Kiefer. Nora had great faith and a caring nature. She was predeceased by her husband Daniel in 1992; and by her brothers, Jerry (Dermy), Daniel, and William. Nora is survived by her sister, Kitty and her brother, James, both of Millstreet, County Cork, Ireland; by her daughter, Cathy (Neil) Salisbury, and her son, Jerry (Doreen) O’Connor; her grandchildren, Connor and Danielle Salisbury, and Logan, Liam, and Aidan O’Connor; and her many nieces, Ellen O’Leary Collins, and nephews. A special thanks to her caretaker, Maria Corrado, for the past 6 months and to St. Peter’s Hospice. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, December 15th from 9am to 10:30am at the A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 State Route 81, Greenville. A Funeral Mass will be offered on the 15th at 11am at St. John the Baptist Church, 4987 State Route 81, Greenville, followed by burial in Greenville Cemetery. Those wishing to remember Nora in a special way, can make memorial donations to either St. John the Baptist Church, PO Box 340, Greenville, NY 12083 or to the Community Hospice, 310 S. Manning Blvd. Albany, NY 12208. Condolences can be posted at ajcunninghamfh.com.

Thought for the week ahead

Christianity is not merely belief.

It is the practice of that belief by active charity. (Frank Duff)Saturday 21st November celebrates the feast day for the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and celebrates when Mary was asked to be the mother of the Jesus. Her response, “Let it be done to me,” was a great act of faith as she placed her whole self at the service of God.

This weekend we say a special prayer for mothers everywhere and ask the Blessed Virgin Mary to protect them and guide them in these challenging times.

As a mark of respect to the sisters of the Presentation Order a wreath was laid in the Presentation Cemetery by the Girls National School and the Community School in recognition of the service the sisters have given to our Parish. [read more …] “Millstreet Parish Newsletter 22nd November 2020”

Historian and Author, Jack Lane at Millstreet Museum in 1998.

Geraldine Goggin with one of the two hugely important Millstreet Posters which she has kindly presented to Millstreet Museum in memory of the late Michael and Matthew Murphy.
We believe the year of this magnificent Poster is either 1960 or 1965. Perhaps someone who attended the historic occasion at the “Star” Ballroom might confirm the correct year.
A wonderful “West End Cinema” Poster from 1973 which was the year that the Cinema closed. For years we were hoping to acquire for Millstreet Museum one of these precious Posters. Earlier Posters were narrower. If anyone finds such Posters we would be so very glad to make a copy of such Posters for archival purposes.   Many thanks to Geraldine Goggin for this great Poster.

Mark Keane’s truly amazing winning goal for Cork on Sunday.

Sheila Murphy, San Francisco and Curraraigue – Tenth Anniversary – 2nd Nov. 2020

In remembrance

of our beloved Aunt Sheila

late of San Francisco, USA and Curraraigue, Banteer.

“Nature’s first green is gold,

Her hardest hue to hold.

Her early leaf’s a flower,

But only so an hour.

Then leaf subsides to leaf.

So Eden sank to grief,

So dawn goes down to day.

Nothing gold can stay.”

(Dearly loved and sadly missed by her nieces Margaret, Brigid, Breda and Noreen, her nephews Liam and John, grand nieces and grand nephews).

Rest in peace
