Captain Con Murphy

My great grandmother was Marie Dennehy who used to live at the house that used to stand at the entrance of Mill Lane in Millstreet. It was said that Marie was a 1st cousin to Captain Con Murphy. Marie’s mother was Maryanne Murphy from Knocknagullane, Ballydaly. I was going through a family album that Marie Dennehy owned and I believe that I have a photograph of Captain Con Murphy.

Genealogy Search – Edward and Susan McDowell

Hello Millstreet community,

Recent DNA matches show that I may have a link to Millstreet involving an old family story, one now backed up by modern records. My great-great-great-grandparents, Edward and Susan McDowell, eloped about 1793-94. Edward was Susan’s family coachman, so she was then disinherited – ‘cut off with an angry shilling’ was the phrase used in an old letter in my possession; he then became a shoemaker to keep them. No maiden name for Susan is recorded in folklore or in the relevant records I’ve been able to find in recent years online. Admiralty records show that Edward McDowell, 30-year-old shoemaker, b. 1766 Augher, co Tyrone enlisted in the Royal Navy as a private marine in 1796 and that the couple were in RN Dublin accommodation in 1797. A plausible 1839 death record for Susan describes her as 65, so she would’ve been under age when she and Edward married. She is described as his wife by both the RN and St Mary’s, Dublin where their eldest child John, b. 1794, was baptised in April 1795, but no modern record of their marriage exists. (They must’ve used a clergyman willing to marry clandestine couples, who gave them a piece of paper to flourish; perhaps he didn’t keep a tight register or else it was destroyed.) The couple had three children; I’m descended from the third, Sarah, born at Bristol in 1807 but WWII bombing destroyed all relevant records there. Sarah emigrated to Van Dieman’s Land and married a Donegal man in 1833. Her 1861 Kangaroo Flat, Victoria death certificate confirms her parents’ names and Edward’s occupation as shoemaker. There are hundreds of McCarthy links in my DNA matches; a few also indicate Millstreet as a location of interest, although it’s hard to say more because few Ancestry DNA matches have trees. Does this elopement story chime with the folklore of any one reading it here? I would be very grateful for any information about who Susan may have been, whether McCarthy or else, perhaps, some connected name. She is my last big family mystery, one I’ve been trying to crack for decades. I live in the Hunter Valley, NSW.

Looking for Photographs

Hi there, my mother Lena née Kelleher ( Eileen  Ni Ceilleachair) of Tooreenbawn (now living in Kilnamartyra) is turning 70 (1952) and we are trying to get some pictures from her communion/ confirmation.  She attended national school in Aubane starting 1958 and ended school in Kilcorney.  She had confirmation in Banteer church.  I know it’s a long shot but if anyone was in class with her back then or could steer in me in right direction it would be much appreciated please.

Knocknalammon Memories

I’ll try and give some background on the photos. They were in a box in my grandmother’s home. I looked at them with her when I was young but unfortunately didn’t label them. My grandmother passed away in 2002. She was Hannah O‘Sullivan from Knocknaloman. She married Patrick O‘Brien from Ballydaly in New York. Some of the photos include her brother Dan and sisters Liz, Mary, and Hanorah. I think her brother Jerry and sister Kathleen may be in some of the photos. Mary (called Babe) was the last surviving sibling in Knocknaloman. She passed away in 1981.  Most of the photos were developed at “Cronin Cash Chemist” in Rathmore.
There are 2 photos of Ellen O‘Sullivan. She is standing holding a book in one and petting a dog in another. Ellen was murdered in 1931. I’m pretty sure she was a cousin.
There are several photos of two teenage girls Mary and Nora Linehan. I remember my grandmother speaking fondly of them but I don’t know anything about them.
There is at least one labeled Kit Moynihan. I know she was a friend of my grandmother.
There are several with a man with white hair and mustache, At least one is labeled Dan Hickey. I think Dan may have been a cousin. Grandma talked highly of him.

Forde family

My Grandfather was Dennis Ford(e) brother of Ed who lived next door to the Post Office in Millstreet.  Ed was the only sibling to remain in Cork.  The other siblings Joan, Patrick and Daniel went to America.  I would like to find out my Great Grandfather and Great grandmother information.

Trying to trace my Irish ancestors

I’m hoping you might be able to help me. I am from South Wales and am trying to trace my Irish ancestors. According to the 1921 Census and the 1939 Register my great-grandmother, Mary Ford(e) was born in County Cork, 18 November 1888. Her marriage certificate notes that her father was William Ford(e) who was an Agricultural Labourer. The closest match to these details I can find is the birth of a Mary Forde born 10 December 1887 in Drishane, Millstreet, father William Forde (Farm Labourer living in Rathduane) and mother Johannah Forde (formerly Cremin). Places I know or have been told Mary lived are Mountain Ash and Llanbradach (South Wales). Do you know of any individuals with the surname Forde or Cremin in Millstreet that might be connected to me?

Murphy – Shannaknuck

My name is Kevin Murphy. I am a new coadmin of the Murphy DNA project through familytreedna. I have been conducting much of the genealogical research for members in our group. One of our members is believed to have origins in Shananuck/Shanacknuck descended from a John Murphy of Shannaknuck 1800-1895 who passed at the Union Workhouse, Millstreet.
There are a number of Murphys in our group within the same genetic family with origins around Millstreet in particular, however I was hoping to possibly grab the interest of more Murphy men to test their Y DNA. Our Murphy genetic family is the largest of all in the group by far and is heavily concentrated in the Province of Munster.
I am attaching a map of areas of these different Murphys just below.
Interestingly enough we share a common male ancestor with a group of Northwest Cork O’Sheas and Cork Harringtons within the last 1000 or so years. I am working on distinguishing what Gaelic surname these Harringtons were as there are a few possibilities.
Walt Disney’s great nephew Roy Patrick Disney shares a common male ancestor with us within the last 1300-1800 years and does not match any of the Disneys of Norman origin.
If anyone is interested, especially any Murphys, in this sort of research please feel free to have to send me an email.

This is a long shot but I have a question for you.
My Grandparents lived in Meenskeehy, Derrinagree. Their names were Daniel and Nora (nee Desmond) Cronin. He died circa 1934 and she died December 27 1963.
They are buried in Nohoval cemetery.
I have looked at records available to me online but I cannot find where exactly they are buried.
I am wondering where records of their deaths would be recorded.
I appreciate any help or suggestions you would have for me.

Information on family genealogy required

My Great Gran emigrated to New Zealand from Millstreet in c1882, her
mother was Mary Murphy (nee Riordon) husband Cornelius Murphy. Mary died in Millstreet on the 6th of November 1896 and her daughter Margaret
Corkery was present at her death. Margaret was my Great Gran Honoria’s
sister and I have had contact with her family one came to New Zealand
other sisters Ellen Hickey (daughter came to New Zealand) and Mary
McGuane want to the USA.

What I would like to know please if any one has
any info on the other brothers and sisters, Bridget Murphy b 1851,
Johanna b 1852. Julia b 1856, and Cornelius 1858, they were born in
Boherbue but shifted to Millstreet.

Elizabeth Leader, Carriganima/Mashanaglas

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone on this forum can shed any light my Mother’s ancestors please?
She tells me that her Mother (Elizabeth Leader) was from Mill Street Co.Cork.  Not sure of the full picture but my Mother moved to another area of Co.Cork when she was young and was raised with another family.  She doesn’t really have any recollection of either of her parents.  My Mother’s Father was Michael Bransfield from Middleton.

Collins / Sheehan / O’Hare of Cloghoulamore

Hello from Boston!
I’m doing some family history research, and my great-grandmother Mary Agnes Collins (Molly) came from Millstreet and emigrated to the US at about 15 years old.
“Maria (Mary) Collins, baptised 5 December 1884″. Her mother is listed as Ellena Collins. The priest was “J. Martin”. And her location is listed as “CLOUGHOOLABEG“.
Does anyone know anything about this family or location?

Daniel McCarthy, born c.1755 in Millstreet

My mother was a McCarthy. I have traced her family line back to Daniel McCarthy who was born in Millstreet in 1755.
Are there any McCarthy historians who might be related to Daniel McCarthy who was born in Millstreet in 1755 because then we would be related?
I would love to meet them when I visit Ireland in September.

Hardings of Millstreet

“Hello friends! I am searching for Harding family members in the area, and tracing family back to Joseph and Mary Harding of Millstreet, shoemakers in the 1800’s. I know my G-G-Grandad (Bryan Harding) came to America in 1857, settled in Massachusetts then Rochester NY. His brother Daniel, sister Julia emigrated also. Any Harding descendants in the area? The family of Cornelius Horgan and Honora Riordan, Dereen / Glenleigh

Hi, my name is Jeanne Cianciola. My great-grandfather Patrick Horgan emigrated to Boston in 1888 from Queenstown. His birth certificate states he was born 3/10/1867 in Dereen, Millstreet. His parents were Cornelius Horgan (6/20/1832) and Honora Riordan. He had 2 brothers: William (3/13/1864) and Timothy (5/9/1861). I believe William married Eliza Mangan 4/7/1889 and Timothy married Hannah Crowley 2/21/1889. I’ve only been researching for about a year and found the information above in the National Archives and Irish Geneology sites. I’ve hit a wall, so to speak. I’m wondering if I still have any ancestors in the area or if you might have further information on any of them. Thanks so much!

Looking for O’Sullivans

Hello! My name is Erin, I’m from the States but studying at UCC for the semester. My grandmother sent me with information about our family and family’s friends that lived in Millstreet, and I was hoping to be able to get in touch with them. My great grandmother was Catherine (Nanny) Kelleher, she and her family lived next to the O’Sullivans whose property borders the Blackwater River (not sure exactly where though, but near Dooneen). My grandparents and other family members have visited the O’Sullivan’s when they visited Ireland in the past. If anyone knows them and could put me in contact with them that would be amazing! My grandmother sent me with some pictures of her on the property from years ago and I was hoping I could be able to visit again for her. [f]

Hello, I visited Millstreet this September but couldn’t quite catch up with Mr. Radley. My great-grandmother was Bridget Mary Francis Kelleher and was born in Millstreet 1 FEB 1861. Her parents were Timothy Kelleher and Johannah Murphy. She and her husband, David Morrissey (or Morrison) emigrated to the US in 1889. A different Hare family from Cloghoulamore?

Marriage of JOHANNES (JOHN) SHEEHAN of BALLYDALLY and HANORIA (HONORA) HARE of CLOUGHOLAMORE on 27 April 1875, – her parents were John Hare and Helen Kelleher [civil]

(At first I thought this was Denis’ (1810-1898) sister, but this Hanoria must have been born after 1840, while denis was born around 1810 … 30+ years apart, so i don’t know where they fit in. TODO … try to figure this out)

… They had four children Timothy, Catherine, John, and Patrick, of which only Timothy and Catherine survived, and wife Hanoria died in 1886.

John Sheehan married his neighbour Ellen Collins in 1889. Notes on that family are in this article on Sheehan / Collins / Hare.

Donnelly/Herlihy/Lehane Clan of Ballydaly

Wondering if there is anyone who is interested in mid 1800s family connections to the Donnellys of Caherbarnagh? John and Michael were sons of Daniel and Mary. John was born late 1820s, Johanna, b. 1832, and Michael, abt. 1835. The three went off to America, settling in the State of Vermont. I am descended from John.

Their siblings included Mary, Jeremiah, Dermot and Honora. Honora married John Lehane and lived nearby in Knocknaloman. I know two of those who remained in Ireland were still living in 1917, when Michael passed. Just wondering if there are any Lehanes in that area, these days?

I also have a question about a Mary Herlihy, who died in Millstreet in 1902. Would she have died as a Herlihy, if she had married Daniel Donnelly? She is found in the Lehane household in 1901, but as a lodger, not mother-in-law. Any pointers to folks in the area who might connect to this line would be very much appreciated

Margaret Denahy Roney, born in Cloghoulamore 1885

“Looking for relatives of Margaret Denahy born on July 1, 1885. Father was Denis Denahy. Immigrated to the United States as a child. Margaret was my grandmother. Her mother was Johanna Shea. My grandmother had a sister named Claire. They left Ireland sometime in the 1890’s. Margaret’s obituary said they moved from Millstreet, Cork. Ellen Donohue of Carrigacooleen, b.1863

I have just found that my late husand’s grandmother was born in Millstreet in 1863. Her name was Ellen Donohue and her father was Dennis Donohue and her mother was Hannah Riordan. Dennis’s father was John Donohue and her mother was Ellena. I would like to contact anyone connected with this family. John R FitzGerald Mahoney

Hi, I’m trying to find my ancestral roots: My Great Grandfather, John R FitzGerald, was born in Millstreet around 1828 and married my Great Grandmother, Mary Mahoney who was also from Millstreet and born in 1844. They came to the US in the 1860’s. His father was Richard FitzGerald born around 1800 and died in 1840. His wife was Nancy Murphy. Both from Millstreet. I was hoping that someone might know something about them. I am planning a visit to Millstreet next year.Any help would be appreciated.

Great Grandfather Patrick Henry Linehan

I am trying to find out if my Great Grandfather Patrick Henry Linehan is buried in Millstreet.

He was a Master carpenter who lived with his family in Botherbue and had several children including my Grandmother Kattie Linehan who married my Grandfather Thomas Tynan.

He died on the 22 May 1906 – thank you if anyone can help.

I am looking for my Cronin/Lucy Relatives

My name is John P Cronin and my Great-Grandfather Micheal Cronin immigrated to America in 1883, he married a women by the name of Katherine Danahy and had three sons and two daughters. His family was located in Boherbue/Boherboy near Kilmean, my great Grandfather had 10 brothers and sisters, of which one was a Johanna Cronin. One of her children or grandchildren named Sheila married a Tim Lucy. We in America received a letter in 1986 from the Lucy family, there is also a mention of a Catherine Cronin, unfortunately, no one followed up on this letter, now thirty years have gone by so I am attempting to find more of my roots, any information would be gratefully appreciated!

Genealogy: Murphy / O’Callaghan

Hello! This post might sound random but I thought I’d give it a shot. My mother’s family is from Millstreet (her grandma and grandpa) and I was wondering if there are still any family members who live there. They would be part of the O’Callaghan and Murphy families. They immigrated to San Francisco, CA and Oregon in the early 1900’s but my mom said she kept in touch with family who still lived in Ireland when she was younger. Mary Murphy and Dennis O’Callaghan are my great-grandparents for reference. Looking for relatives of Timothy Foley

I am looking for relatives of TIMOTHY FOLEY who lived in the Millstreet area. He was born at Doon (Doonasleen) on the 17 July 1902. I recall being told his daughter played cards at Marion’s Bar (McCarthy’s Bar) some 12 or 14 years ago. I myself am from Doon trying to help a relative of the Foleys in Idaho USA.
