Regional Report 1128 – 14th August 2012

 by

Eily Buckley

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1128 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this lovely sunny Tuesday morning.

Well our annual Summer Show lived up to its great name again this year. From Wednesday to late on Sunday evening last, the sun shone in all its glory as thousands of horses from many countries were put through their paces in both indoor and outdoor arenas. As many as ten arenas going at any one time. Over 2,000 horses in all taking part. The many new features made the venue look awesome, a truly fitting place to show off to the competitors from America and Canada as well as many European Countries.

Please look up the website for all the pictures and other details. Well done again to the Duggan Family.

This weekend it will be the turn of the people of Aubane to celebrate the centenary of the School /Social Centre. They kick off of Friday night August 17th with a grand Dinner Dance at the Gleneagle Hotel. Tickets at €30 each can be had from John Kelleher or Martina Sheehan.

His knowledge of art and his gifts with other people he is prepared to share.

The singer songwriter Eugene Brosnan for Millstreet waves the flag
A world wide known entertainer that is surely worth a brag
At many a big concert the favourite of the crowd
And of his remarkable achievements he ought to feel quite proud.

Generous Response to Museum/Tourist Information Centre Collection 2012

Eamonn McSweeney (originally of Minor Row, Millstreet), Breeda O’Leary, Brendan Murphy and Mary Kelleher – some of the very kind supporters/organisers at Millstreet Museum’s Annual Church gate collection on Sat., 11th Aug. 2012. The wonderfully generous response to this year’s collection amounted to €1,587.73 which will assist in defraying the cost of insurance, heating and lighting as well as part-fund the cost of a new display unit in the restoration of the the new centre for which the official handing over of the key is imminent.   Sincere thanks to All who contributed so very generously.  (S.R.)

Genealogy: Denis Cronin (born 1854)

Our Great Great Grandfather we think was called John. He had at least 2 sons: Cornelius b.1849 and Dennis b.1854 (our Great Grandfather.) The story goes that he remarried and raised a second family who may have inherited the family farm. This could explain the emigrations of Cornelius and Dennis – Cornelius went to America where he became a successful lawyer.

Dennis our Great Grandfather claimed to have been born in Millstreet in 1854. He was associated with a Colonel Elliot with whom he left for England as his servant. The colonel died very shortly afterwards leaving Dennis stranded in Bath where he [read more …] “Genealogy: Denis Cronin (born 1854)”

Con Walsh – GAA Star and Olympic Bronze Medalist

As the Olympics in London 2012 come to a close, we remember Carriganima man Con Walsh (competing for Canada) who came third in the 1908 Olympics Hammer Throw, as a number of Irish emigrants to America “ran rings around the athletes of the British Empire in London”:

Con Walsh, Carriganima was born in April 1881. He was selected to represent Canada in the hammer event at the 1908 London Olympic games where he won a bronze medal with a throw of 159ft 11 ins.

At Macroom sports on July 31st 1900 he tested his first success in the athletics arena. It was the first of more than six hundred victories in his career. Genealogy: Maurice O’Connell – request for help

Stephen O’Connell requests help locating any decendants of Maurice O’Connell: My family geneology, as far as I know, has Maurice O’Connell arriving in the United States circa 1880, having left from Cork, Ireland with his wife Catherine Cronin, and several of his children. Family word had them residing in or near Millstreet, where they had a farm which was lost because it was used to guarantee a failed debt of Catherine’s brother. I have a Church Baptism record for Hanora Connell, from Lisgoold, Cork dated April 12, 1865. Parents listed as Maurice Connell and Catherine Cronin and sponsored by Arthur Leary and Abigail Cronin. On the right is a photo of Maurice.

Museum/Tourist Information Centre Church Gate Collection This Weekend

The finalisation of the process of handing over the lease by Cork Co. Council at Carnegie Hall to Millstreet Museum/Tourist Information Centre is very close at hand.  Re-establishing the new setting involves significant costs especially in the purchase of new display units.  This weekend’s annual church gate collection (11th/12th August) is our main source of funding and permits us to defray insurance, heating and lighting costs as well as funding  limited development.  It also allows us to help in the running costs associated with our Millstreet website.   The kind generosity of the people who contribute annually is very much appreciated and is of vital importance.   We thank you in advance for your kindness and for helping us to provide these local amenities.   (S.R.)
