Donna Lyons has contacted us to make us aware of a special Afternoon Tea Fundraising Event at Castlemagner Community Centre on this Saturday (14th May) from 12 noon until 3pm at which Michelle Finn whose mother, Mary (nee O’Connor) comes from Millstreet – will be present.  Both Michelle Finn and Lizzie Lee who will be competing in the 3,000m Steeple Chase in the Athletics section of the upcoming Rio Olympics – will both be present for the Castlemagner Event on Saturday.  This is an opportunity to meet with the two superbly talented Athletes and for Duhallow people especially to show their heartfelt support.   For any further details re Saturday’s event one may contact 086 1955 667.  (S.R.)

Mary McSweeney, Killarney Road, Millstreet  very kindly presenting a precious memento of the London 2012 Olympics which her daughter, Julie, promised us during a visit to Millstreet Museum in August 2013.   We also include some of the Friends and Visitors who happened to call at the moment of presentation. Con Walsh – GAA Star and Olympic Bronze Medalist

As the Olympics in London 2012 come to a close, we remember Carriganima man Con Walsh (competing for Canada) who came third in the 1908 Olympics Hammer Throw, as a number of Irish emigrants to America “ran rings around the athletes of the British Empire in London”:

Con Walsh, Carriganima was born in April 1881. He was selected to represent Canada in the hammer event at the 1908 London Olympic games where he won a bronze medal with a throw of 159ft 11 ins.

At Macroom sports on July 31st 1900 he tested his first success in the athletics arena. It was the first of more than six hundred victories in his career.
