A Day On Clara Hill

A light cover of snow lay on the mountain and the air had a wintery chill
And the cold damp winds of January blew across Clara hill
As we climbed up towards the wooden cross Jerry and John Mahony, Donal Hickey and I
A memory to remember until the day I die.

The Mahonys had their working dog Sandy with them and Donal had Jerry his cattle dog
And the climb up through the snow clad bracken for Schoolboys a hard old slog
The dogs bored without a fox or hare to chase suddenly commenced to fight
For Jerry a bloodless victory though not a pretty sight. [read more …] “A Day On Clara Hill”

Film Board pulls plug on film about Joanne

Joanne O’Riordan who was born without arms and legs has vowed to get a documentary on her life completed, despite the Irish Film Board’s shock decision to axe funding.

Joanne, 16, from Millstreet, Co Cork, was honoured by the United Nations last April for the incredible courage and determination she has shown in defying her disability.

Joanne told the Sunday Independent that while she is “shocked and very disappointed”, she will not let the controversial IFB decision scuttle her project.

The documentary — entitled No Limbs, No Limits — was axed after the IFB said it did not believe the project had [read more …] “Film Board pulls plug on film about Joanne”

Poetry: Jim Cashman

‘Twas sad to read of the passing of Jim Cashman he died in Springwood New South Wales from Tullig far away
I remember him when i was a  young fellow he was then fast approaching his prime day
As a young man he was such a carefree person tall and  lean and lively on his feet
He and Fiona Hickey Duhallow’s finest rock ‘n’ rollers the dance craze they introduced  to Millstreet
The wanderlust was in the young Jim Cashman he left Tullig when he was in his prime
His journey took him far south to Australia where he married, raised his children and grew  old with wear of time
Fond memories of him do live on in Millstreet where [read more …] “Poetry: Jim Cashman”

“STRINGS” in Derry

During the month of June “STRINGS” fiddle group took part in The International Youth Fiddle Camp at The North Atlantic Fiddle Convention in Derry city. Although the kids worked very hard every day, it was an enjoyable week. There were 179 young fiddle players taking part in the camp. The Millstreet players attended and took part in music sessions and concerts during the week. The Clipper Round The World Yacht Race was visiting the city on the weekend we were there and “STRINGS” were filmed as part of the tv program “CLIPPER” shown on BBC1 NI on Friday 6th July.  Derry is a wonderful city, full of history, beautiful buildings and lovely friendly people. I took hundreds of pictures – here is a selection. Hope you enjoy them. G.D.

Regional report 1125 – 24th July 2012

 by

Eily Buckley

Dia is Mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1125 from Millstreet.Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very, best on this rather dull but mild Tuesday morning.

The beautifying of our town goes on and this week all eyes are on the Gable- end- wall at Mill Lane, in the town centre, where a beautiful mural has been painted, depicting the old mill race, which was part and parcel of our every-day lives in the past. Well done to all associated with it. Especially the artist himself Neil O’Dwyer for Co.Tipperary.

Please keep up the anti litter drive. Every Monday evening a dedicated group work very hard to make Millstreet a prize-winning town. Come out and help.

There was lots of joy at the Social Club in Aubane on Saturday night when Seamus Buckley celebrated his 50th birthday. But it was a celebration with a difference. Seamus used the occasion the raise funds for a past pupil on his by the name of Pat McMahon a native of Meelin. Pat a trained nurse was so overwhelmed by the poverty that he saw in Calcutta that he forged ahead and with another man they opened a hospital there. Now they are doing wonderful work to aid the poor and sick. At Saturdays night’s party well in excess of €3,000 was raised, Pat says a child’s eyesight can be saved for a mere ten cents ,almost unbelievable. So well done to Seamus Buckley on his 50th Birthday.

The centenary of celebrations of Aubane  school will be held on August 17-20th. They are asking for any old pictures etc.

Eugene Brosnan

The undying bug of wander in some people is strong
When young Eugene Brosnan left the Town of Millstreet with him he took his guitar along
He busked around Europe in many a city and town
At the start of his journey to greater renown

He left Murphy’s Terrace when he was eighteen
A far bigger World out there for him to be seen
To travel in Europe from home far away
From where he first looked on the bright lamp of day
