Rumblings over Community Hospitals
In mid January, newspaper reports began to emerge of problems with many nursing homes across the country, especially in light of upcoming new stricter regulations from HIQA. It became a national political event for a few days, but unfortunately St.Joseph’s Community Hospital Millstreet was one of six in Cork that were mentioned.
Local FG TD Michael Creed dismissed suggestions that the local hospitals faced closure, but FF leader Mícheál Martin insisted that a huge crisis was looming due to new stricter HIQA requirements that are coming in July 2015.
At a local meeting, FG TD Áine Collins suggested that a private modern hospital should be built to replace St. Josephs, and that the community should get behind it.
Locally people have put a lot of time and money to upgrade and maintain our local hospital, because God forbid we can’d afford to lose another service in our community. It’s hard to know what will happen, only time will tell, but it can’t be stressed enough that these services should remain local.
The latest inspection reports a “warm environment … residents voiced how happy they were with the care they received … how residents enjoyed the food of offer … Staff exhibited an in-depth knowledgeable about [read more …] “Rumblings over Community Hospitals”
Slowing down for the sake of our Children
In June of 2014 little Jake Brennan was knocked down by a speeding driver while playing outside his home on a cul-de-sac in Kilkenny. Since then his parents have been campaigning to have speed bumps and a maximum speed of 30km/hr mandatory in residential estates nationwide (50km/hr is the current speed limit).
Our local Councillors have been asked to set up five estates as a pilot scheme for the 30km/h limit, and they have chosen Drishane View in Millstreet.
It is hoped that this will be rolled out in 2015, sooner rather than later. It’s a great initiative to protect our children, but as ever getting some to slow down and cop on is easier said than done 😕 [read more …] “Slowing down for the sake of our Children”

Now we share more images from Sunday when one can truly note how challenging our route was but James O’Sullivan provided us with brilliant walking sticks and wonderful [read more …] “Mary Russell Revisits Butter Road on St.Brigid’s Day 2015”

Lunar Halo in the night skies
A rarely seen phenomena was seen in the skies tonight as the moon looked to have a huge ring around it.
Quite beautiful, it’s called a lunar halo and here’s the explanation:
“A lunar halo is caused by the refraction, reflection, and dispersion of light through ice particles suspended within thin, wispy, high altitude cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. As light passes through these hexagon-shaped ice crystals, it is bent at a 22 degree angle, creating a halo 22 degrees in radius (or 44 degrees in diameter).” – from Farmers Alamac
Our photo doesn’t do it justice, so have a look at lots of great photos of Lunar Halos

Michael & Kathy Superb on “At Your Service” RTÉ1 Television Tonight
If you missed the programme, you can watch it on the RTÉ Player (until February 22nd)
One may view the excellent programme on the RTÉ Player. Anne Keane and Con Herbert were among those who coordinated the most enjoyable set dancing workshop. The programme will undoubtedly be hugely beneficial to the overall enterprise and we are all truly motivated to visit Sherkin with its truly exquisite, beautiful scenery where I spent my very first holiday as a teenager with the wonderfully welcoming O’Connor Family. We all wish Michael & Kathy the greatest of success. Now we share some more still images which I recorded as I watched the [read more …] “Michael & Kathy Superb on “At Your Service” RTÉ1 Television Tonight”

Lourdes Table Quiz – Thank you!
The Table Quiz that took place on Friday 30th January in the Wallis Arms was a great success. The purpose of the evening was to raise money to help cover the travel and accommodation costs of six 5th year students who are going to Lourdes at Easter as helpers with the IHCPT – The Irish Pilgrimage Trust (€650/head). Thirty two teams took part in the quiz and along with the raffle a total of €1894 was raised, which is fantastic.
Thanks to everyone who took part in the event and helped in any way to make the quiz a success. Thanks especially to the Wallis Arms for providing the back room free of charge and to John Tarrant for devising excellent questions once again.

A Huge Thank You
We would like to thank everyone that helped to make the Christmas decoration of Millstreet a success this year. Many people volunteered and contributed in different ways. From the electricians, machinery operators and helpers who put up the lights to the houses and businesses and organisations who paid for the electricity, those who donated trees, money, tools, equipment and time, tea and sandwiches and everyone who spread the word – it couldn’t have happened without you and we very much appreciate your help.
