Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club youths, parents & trainers had a fantastic weekend at the JJ Keneally Newcastle West Cycling Club youth 2 day cycling event where 4 tough stages were held in extremely warm conditions on very hilly roads, fast descents & some serious climbs, a few mechanicals & a bit of fatigue didn’t hold back our 13 riders from performing to the best of their ability, all starting & finishing each stage very strong showing great strength & determination. There was a great buzz & atmosphere around with plenty ice-cream. It was a great weekend of racing all round for the club & youths. Lessons were learnt & skills development for future events.
We had a full field of riders in each age category & each did the club, their parents & coaches very proud.
U12s girls were 1st to kick off the event on Saturday morning with Abaigh Dennehy, Caolfhionn Foley & Rose Linehan.
Followed by U12s boys Dan Dennehy O Sullivan, Conor Lynch, Patrick O Sullivan & Ethan Reel.
U16 girls next up was Kate Murphy, followed on by U16 boys Donagh O Connor & Darragh Dennehy.
Then off 5mins after them were the U14 girls with Hannah Dennehy O Sullivan, followed by U14 boys Nicholas James Buckley & Cianan Dennehy.
All putting in fantastic effort in not so easy conditions.
There was a prize giving in the hall on Sunday evening where we congratulate Rose Linehan who won overall 1st unplaced U11. U12s Conor Lynch wins 3rd overall & Ethan Reel 4th overall. Kate Murphy wins 2nd over all in U16 girls.
We’d like to congratulate & thank Francie Collins & Peter Finn on running a very well organised event & Dany Blondeel for entertaining us with his music & keeping us informed.

Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club weekly notes

The racing scene for both juveniles and adults kicked off last weekend with the Lacey Cup in Tralee and the Ras Maigheo for the underage taking place in Mayo.

SLCC had six riders in the Lacey Cup – John R O’Sullivan, Richard Cleverly, Donie Kelleher, Denis Lynch, Denis O’Connor and Ben Murphy. The race featuring two major climbs Gleann na Gealt and Sliabh Mish was held in very difficult weather on Sunday last. Denis Lynch made the initial 8 man break on the first climb which was eventually reeled back on the decent into Annauscaul. A further break of 12 riders got away near Inch in the middle of the hailstone shower, unfortunately no SLCC rider made this break which stayed away to the finish in Tralee. Denis Lynch, Denis O Connor and Ben Murphy made it home in the second group with the remaining SLCC riders making it home safely in what was a very difficult days work. Well done to Tralee Manor West BC for a well organised event.

The juveniles made the trip to Mayo for the two day, three stage event, featuring a road race on Saturday morning and a TT in the afternoon with a second road race on the Sunday morning. Weather conditions were tough for the full weekend. The Saturday road race was based out of Louisburgh GAA as was the TT in the afternoon which was cut short by half given the now biblical conditions. The Sunday races rolled out of Westport and Murrisk, at the foot of Croagh Patrick. Sean P Fleming and Nicholas Buckley competed in the Under 12 race with Aidan Morley and Ciaran Finnegan competing at Under 16. Amy Fleming finished 3rd in the girls Under 16 with Kate Murphy 2nd in the girls U14. Well done to everyone who travelled and braved the weather, and well done to Westport Covey Wheelers for running a well organised event in such difficult conditions.

Best of luck to Amy and Kate who are part of a Munster Cycling Academy Team travelling to Southport, Liverpool for round one of the Dolan racing Series next weekend. Thanks to the Munster Cycling Academy for this fantastic opportunity.

Training for new juvenile members continues with beginners always welcome to our Saturday morning sessions. Please contact the club via Facebook for further information.

Anyone interested in training for the Ring of Kerry please contact the club via Facebook or 087 9178836.

Cycling adventure

The “Lost/Stolen Panniers” has been found and safely returned to it’s owner.  Delighted that she can continue on her adventures with her bicycle  and panniers in and around the Country.

She sometimes writes a blog when  she goes cycling but  wouldn’t normally write one when it was as short a trip as yesterday, but the kindness which   was shown to her prompted her to highlight Millstreet with Cork’s Old Butter Road .

Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club Notes

The hard work being made by the Juvenile Club really paid off this weekend at the All Ireland Youth Cycling event held by Lakeside Wheelers in Mullingar. In total we had 11 SLCC juveniles taking part from Under 11 right up to Under 16. In the Time Trial held in the village of Multyfarnham our Under 11 boys team of Nicholas Buckley, Keenan Dennehy and Sean P Fleming rode well just losing out on the Team prize by 3 seconds demonstrating how much they have developed over the last 9 months. Amy Fleming won Bronze in the Under 14 girls TT with Ben Murphy 4th in the Boys Under 16 (again missing out of the podium by a second). Amy went on to win 2 more bronze medals in the Road Race and the criterium. Ciaran Finnegan Aidan Morley Dinny Murphy and Darragh Dennehy completed well in the boys under 15 14 and 13 events. Kate Murphy (Under 12) rounded off an excellent weekend for SLCC winning two Bronze medals in the Road Race and the criterium. All told an very strong weekend of racing by the SLCC Riders – thanks to all the coaches and parents for their support. This week Ben Murphy travels to Austria as part of a six man Ireland Team in the five stage International Radfjugendtour Oststeiermark road race. Ben’s team mates hail from Donegal (Errigal) Tyrone (Island wheelers) Dublin (Orwell) Meath (Bohermeen) along with another local rider David Shine from O Leary Stone Kanturk.
