Cork Butter Market

Below is a list of farmers / creameries from the Millstreet area who were delivering butter to the Cork Butter Market in 1884, which taken from the Original Survey of February 1884.

It would be interesting to know how many firkins were supplied by each person, but that data (along with more like the presence of inspectors) is not shown here, but can be seen in the original documents.

This digitised info as well as all the suppliers from around Munster are located on corkarchives.ie. The original forms are available to view in the Archives research room by appointment. A copy of a form may also be obtained on request: Email: <email> or, Tel.+353 (0)21 4505876.

Original Parish Registers now available online

2015-07-09 Millstreet Parish Baptismal Register 1853 to 1865 - front cover
Cover of the Millstreet Parish baptismal register from 1853 to 1863

We’re lucky that the Millstreet Parish (and Kerry Dioscese) baptism and marriage registrers have been digitised and indexed online since 2009, but yesterday the National Library of Ireland have put the microfilm of the of the Catholic Church Registers (pre 1900) for the whole country online. So where we had the information previously, we can now go and see the original entry in the parish registers.

There are four Registration Books for the Millstreet Parish (click the links below to see each one):

Having browsed some of the records, and having compared them to the online records, it became obvious that whoever was transcribing the online records left entries blank where [read more …] “Original Parish Registers now available online”

Regional Report 1273 7th July 2015

Eily Buckley

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1273  Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this Tuesday morning, the first one in July.

The weather is far from summery since the month began.  But nevertheless fruit trees are weighted down  fruit and grain and other crops in the fields look very lush and bountiful. The dry weather in June made easy work for all those involved in saving turf, and it is great to see loads of same being hauled home, to tide them over in the winter ahead. And the big plus is that we don’t have to water the flowers.

So we have, as usual, a lot to be grateful for.

This is the week when all music lovers will cross the Shannon for a week of traditional music and dance, meeting of old friends and making new ones at the Willie Clancy Week in lovely Milltown Malbay  Co. Clare. The weather is never a problem, if its fine they play, sing or dance, their hearts out in the open. If its not they find places to get in and enjoy themselves indoors .

But one thing is sure it will be a great week.

The Willie Clancy Summer School will provide classes for young and not so young to learn music on many instruments as well as a variety of Set dances.  And traditional lore and we wish the Willie Clancy Week  continued success in the years ahead.

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1272 from Millstreet.  Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this soft rich Tuesday morning. The last on in June.

This week we salute Lena Kelleher who recently retired following  almost 30 years as treasured Matron of our local Community Hospital. Lena was a nurse there for 10 years before that. Her devoted staff gave Lena a meaningful send off,  and at a later date she will be  furthered be honoured by our Community Council in appreciation of the wonderful work that she has done for countless numbers of our people over the years. On leaving she ceremoniously handed over the Keys to Noreen McSweeney , who will be our acting Matron.

Our Pipe Band are preparing well to play at the Munster Final which will be held in Killarney on Sunday. Children are getting a great thrill by following the band round the Town Park during their practice sessions .

The popular Mary Hickie  featured well in the crowd on Satuday night at the Miriam O Callaghan Show. Her Lovely Daughter Aileen and her popular husband Matt Cooper, were on the panel, and were enjoyed by all. If you missed it, it can be seen RTE Playback.
