Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1120 from Millstreet .

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this beautiful sunny Tuesday morning  so far…

The Corpus Christi parade was held in the town on Sunday and while some of our people were taking part in it, many others were taking part in the closing ceremonies of the 50th Eucharistic Congress in Dublin. I was thankful to God for giving me the opportunity of being in Dublin. It was an arduous day in many ways but one that nobody would want to miss . Lots of our people made the journey more than once during the week and all were filled with wonder and awe of the great, historic event.

Following the torrential rain during the week for some of the ceremonies, we were blessed with fine weather on Sunday. Sean Radley was there cameras and recorders in hand and he will bring it you when LTV2 programs resume in the Fall, le conaimh De.

CCC Litter League Tables 2012

After two weeks of the Cork County Council Litter Challenge 2012, we find ourselves languishing down the table for our category with only one week remaining. Top score for the second week was unable to detract from the worst score in week 1 🙁 …  but at least it was a big improvement where most other towns dropped points in week 2.

Special thanks to Pat O’Keeffe of Garryvoe with whom I was trained as a teacher and who was the person who alerted me to Sonia’s presence as we (Pat and I) met today by chance.    I reminded Sonia of her visit to a major event in Green Glens, Millstreet in the 1990s.   Hopefully we shall one day seen Sonia in Millstreet again.  Now, having been so inspired and motivated …. where did I leave those track shoes?!!  (S.R.)

The Strong Men Of Cloghoula

The strong men of Cloghoula of them you ought to know
Bill Twomey, Neilus Sweeney the Buckleys Noel, Dan and Joe
In their prime known and famous many miles from Millstreet
At tug of war and athletics and football they were the men to beat.

The strong men of Cloghoula they were as good as gold
But time takes cares of everyone and they too did grow old
Yet better than them it would seem would be quite hard to find
Quite generous of spirit and they were good and kind.

So many famous dog handlers in Millstreet Parish and Town
Where Donie and Jeraldine O Mahony, Dan, Dave and Paddy O Keeffe they carved their own renown
And Paddy Cashman from Tullig Hill great dogs did train and own
And the Duggan brothers Con, Andrew and Tim as a greyhound family were well known,
Con Kelleher and Sheila and their friend John from Cockhill enjoyed some great success,
Paddy Casey, Tommy and Kitty Hennessy their race winners brought them happiness,

JD Kelleher in ‘The Country Girls’

From the Cork Independent: It’s a sort of homecoming for Millstreet native JD Kelleher. He can be currently seen in Red Kettle’s production of Edna O’ Brien’s ‘The Country Girls’, which is playing at Cork Opera House until this Saturday (June 16th). Now based in London for over 20 years, JD is delighted to have the chance to be back in Cork and catch up with old friends and family.

“It’s coming full circle as it all started for me here on the stage of Cork Opera House with the Monforts and Eileen Nolan back when I was in my late teens. Getting the opportunity to be back on one of the greatest stages in the country is truly an honour and I’m delighted to be a part of it.”

JD is no stranger to Ireland as he has been involved in an increasing amount of television work here and readers may recognise him from his appearance as Brendan Fitzgerald, in the TG4 soap opera, ‘Ros na Run.’ His character, Brendan Fitzgerald became the soap villain and he came to a muddy end in one of [read more …] “JD Kelleher in ‘The Country Girls’”

Final Soccer Tables 2011-2012

All the local soccer teams are on a break of a few months for the summer. After Millstreet Celtic’s heroics last season in the league, there was little success for them or any of the local teams this year. Millstreet Celtic had an awful start to the season loosing most of their first seven games, and then went on a winning streak, climbing up the table before fading again at the end of the season. Rathcoole under 15’s missed out on promotion in the last game, a match which they dominated against second place Churchvilla, but a cruel own goal near the end ended their hopes. Rathcoole junior team had a poor year, failing to have a stable team all year and doing well to stay out of relegation trouble, while Los Zarcos above all continue to enjoy their football. All the tables are below:
