Eddie & Kevin Remembered at the 103rd Annual Millstreet Coursing Meeting

At the 103rd Annual Millstreet Coursing Meeting held recently in Millstreet Town Park a minute’s silence was observed for the late Eddie Murphy and Kevin Hickey. Here we share images from the two-day meeting. Click on the pictures to enlarge. (S.R.)

The very clear announcements by Call Steward, Joan Casey who has so very efficiently carried out this role for the past 37 years and which is broadcast by the wonderfully loyal and dedicated John Anthony O’Sullivan – could be heard at the top of Clara Mountain as reported by two very active Cork Climbers whom I met as the Coursing’s first day ended!   Here we share a further selection of images:   Click on the pictures to enlarge. Millstreet Greyhound People

To win a feature race at the Cork track for them was a huge thrill
Dan Collins and his wife Bridgie ace greyhound handlers from Cockhill
The dogs they owned and trained always well turned out and always hard to beat
They became known for training dogs far distant from Millstreet,
So many famous dog handlers in Millstreet Parish and Town
Where Donie and Jeraldine O Mahony, Dan, Dave and Paddy O Keeffe they carved their own renown
And Paddy Cashman from Tullig Hill great dogs did train and own
And the Duggan brothers Con, Andrew and Tim as a greyhound family were well known,
Con Kelleher and Sheila and their friend John from Cockhill enjoyed some great success,
Paddy Casey, Tommy and Kitty Hennessy their race winners brought them happiness,
Denis Corkery and Noreen and Noreen’s father Pat dogs with them a way of life

Three times Irish Coursing tipster of the year quite an amazing feat

Congratulations is due to Dan O’Donoghue, Lackabawn, Millstreet on his recent achievement of winning the Irish Coursing Club’s “Coursing Fantasy Competition.” This All-Ireland competition requires greyhound enthuasiasts to choose eight greyhounds from a list of hundreds at the start of the coursing season. The dogs earn points throughout the year and the individual with the most points at the end of the season is deemed the winner of the €5,000 prize. Dan, renouned far and wide for his knowledge of coursing greyhounds, held a narrow lead going into the final event of the season, the JP McManus Irish Cup last weekend. 2010 North Cork Cup winner: "Party Jay Cee"

Game Protection Cup

The tragic death of former Irish Coursing Club chief executive Jerry Desmond recently has shocked the nationwide greyhound industry. An article in the Nationalist Newspaper this week also tells us that back in 1926, a dog owned by Jerry’s fathers dog “Mile Stream Boy” was the first man to win the Game Protection Cup when it was first run at Millstreet Coursing in 1926.

Last year, the Game Protection Cup was won by our own Donie O’Mahony with his dog Bridge Spirit, who also added the Oaks Trial Stake with his bitch Becky at the same meet.

Coursing in Millstreet this year is scheduled for Thursday & Friday – December 30th &31st.
