Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1102. Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this lovely Spring morning.
Sadly, this week we mourn the passing of one of our most outstanding people. Willie Neenan, who was born in August of 1933, will forever go down in the history books of Millstreet as being our best ever in the field of athletics.
His sporting career stretched from the age of fifteen, when he became part of the Millstreet Athletic Club to when he won a silver medal, in the world Veteran Cross Country Championships at the age of 50, in Puerto Rico, and still he continued to race and win, well into his seventies.
During his long years in sport he never failed to encourage others to get involved and to train and to become winners too.
The huge crowds that attended his funeral went to show the high esteem at which Willie Neenan was held by his co-athletes as well as our community at large. May his gentle soul now rest in peace as we offer our deepest sympathy to his lovely wife Marie and his family. [read more …] “Regional Report 1102 – 14th February 2012”
This morning on Breakfast with Hector (2FM), Siobhain who works in Alps, Millstreet spoke with Hector about how her pencil at work was getting shorter and shorter every day, even though she wasn’t using it, and she’s trying to figure what’s going on. Listen to it below on the 2FM podcast (from 07:20 to 11:00):
Due to essential water repairs, the supply of water to the Minor Row, Fairfield Rise, Altamount, Tanyard Wood and Drishane Road will experience interruptions from 10am to 4pm today and tomorrow (Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th) – from Cork County Council.
Sad the news of the passing of the legendary athlete
Surely the greatest ever in the green of Millstreet
Against the best in Ireland and the World with success he did compete
Yet despite his fame and success he was one without conceit
The marvellous Willie Neenan he was a mighty man
In more than sixty years of running in thousands of races he ran
So humble in his many victories and gracious in defeat
Every time he lined up at the starting line he was the one to beat [read more …] “On The passing Of Willie Neenan”

We beat Glenthorn 3-2 away from home today. Glenthorn started the game much better than us and took the lead after 10 mins. They had a couple of more half chances before we started to get into it after around 25 mins. We had a couple of good chances through Danny O Riordan and Tadhg Collins before Paul Dawson forced the keeper into making an excellent save. It stayed 1-0 to half time but we came out a lot stronger in the 2nd half.
Almost immediately Collins had a good chance and another followed for Chris Cleary. It took us until the 65th min to get back level. A Tim Kiely free kick from the left wing evaded both defenders and attackers before bouncing to the corner of the net. We were well on top now and Trevor O Connor almost gave us the lead when he volleyed just over from a Dawson corner. Our second goal came in [read more …] “Glenthorn 2 – Millstreet Celtic 3”

We all know loved ones who have been taken care of by Marymount Hospice, either in the hospice or by their home care team. TV3 is running a two part documentary on Marymount, and it’s very moving to see people tell their stories, how it works from the inside, and the level of care they give.
About the documentary (from TV3.ie): The staff and patients of St. Patrick’s Marymount Hospital in Cork city are on the move. 141 years after it first opened its doors, this much loved Cork institution is moving to a new hospital which will be Ireland’s most advanced palliative care facility and a centre of excellence for the Irish hospice movement.
