Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1102. Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this  lovely Spring morning.

Sadly, this week we mourn the passing of one of our most outstanding people. Willie Neenan, who was born in August of  1933, will forever go down in the history books of Millstreet as being our  best ever in the field of athletics.
His sporting career stretched from the age of fifteen, when he became part of the Millstreet Athletic Club to when he won a silver medal, in the world Veteran  Cross Country Championships at the age of 50, in Puerto Rico, and still he continued to race and win, well into his seventies.
During his long years in sport he never failed to encourage others to get involved and to train and to become winners too.
The huge crowds that attended his funeral went to show the high esteem at which Willie Neenan was held by his co-athletes as well as our community at large. May his gentle soul now rest in peace as we offer our deepest sympathy to his lovely wife Marie and his family.

  1. a chara, it is with deep regret that i read of the death of my good friend Willie Neenan in the paper today.I have known Willie for over 40 years and had the pleasure of taking him to Geneva in Switzerland in 1980 or 81 to compete.Willie and Ger Murphy were great people to know and run with and done the village of Millstreet proud. Wille was a lovely man and always good company to be with. When our paths crossed as it did many times in the old days with the NACAI he was a joy to see. I am disappointed that i did not know of Willies passing earlier as I would have made it my buisness to be at the funeral, never the less I would like to pass on my regards to his wife and family from myself and family and the Fethard Athletic Club.May the green sod rest lightly on his soul Miceal Mc Cormack Fethard, Tipperary .
