Timmy Connors Gone From Dooneen

Timmy Connors gone from Dooneen in eternal rest he lay
He was a decent human being decent in every way

R.T.A.I. Visits Exquisite Millstreet Country Park Today

The Cork Branch of the Retired Teachers’ Association of Ireland visited Millstreet Country Park today (19th Sept. 2012). They were wonderfully impressed by the sights and sounds experienced from the Park Transporters as well as the delicious meal prepared by the dedicated Staff of “Nibbles in the Park”. The weather was excellent for the very enjoyable visit. (S.R.)

It was so very fortunate that singer supreme, Annmarie O’Riordan just happened to be visiting the Park with her parents, Eileen and Humphrey.   Annmarie totally charmed the visitors with her great rendition of “Bold Thady Quill” during which many of the Retired Teachers joined in.   Many of the visitors intend to return to [read more …] “R.T.A.I. Josephine Gubbins

I recall her as a young and attractive woman she had a friendly warmth in her hello
When i was a young and a shy country fellow and that is going back many years ago
She always smiled and greeted me in passing though her i really never got to know
Her parents Tom and Madge back then were living and Josephine she was the Pride of Minor Row.

I do recall the young Josephine Gubbins in her prime one of the finest in Millstreet
So tall and graceful and so very popular she was one unaffected by conceit
Perhaps she still lives in the Town of Millstreet at home like many more she chose to stay
But going by what i do read and hear of Millstreet ’tis a changed place from the place i knew today.

When the local budget next allows, the remainder of the town roadway will also be resurfaced but for now this marks the present completion of the resurfacing project.   We shall share some more images in coming days but here in our picture below we view how well the new road now appears.  Road markings are to follow shortly.  (S.R.)

Joanne O’Riordan – Young Person of the Year

A huge congratulations to Joanne O’Riordan who won the Young Person of the Year Award in Dublin last Saturday:

Joanne O’Riordan, Young Person of the Year, for her determination in highlighting the challenges faced by people with disabilities today. 16-year-old Joanne was born with a rare condition – total amelia syndrome, leaving her without arms and legs, and is one of just seven people in the world with the condition. In April, Joanne was invited to New York to deliver the keynote address at the United Nations International Telecommunication Union’s conference, Girls in Technology. At the conference, she challenged leading women in their field to build her a robot. Joanne was presented with her award by singer/musician Niall Breslin, AKA Bressie.

Watch the full People of the Year Awards Ceremony on RTE Player (Joanne is on from 46:25 to 52:45. Available until October 6th) [read more …] “Joanne O’Riordan – Young Person of the Year”

Regional Report 1133 – 18th September 2012

by

Eily Buckley

Dia is Mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News report 1133 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on lovely sunny Tuesday morning, following a showery night.

A high-powered meeting was held at the Wallis Arms Hotel last Tuesday night at which the Prizes for the best places in town were presented by the Tidy Towns Committee. There were prizes for the best business front and the best private front.

In spite of the months of bad weather, the judges still had a hard task to decide the very best. Their final result was as follows. Best business front went to Colemans. With Ursula’s Clara Inn a good second. Best in the private section went to John and Charlotte McSweeney Sycamore Drive. Out of 16 short listed Teresa Kelleher, Joan Wall, and Mary Murray got the awards. Very special recognition went to the Presentation Convent, and Kay Ryan Killarney Rd. for their wonderful display of flowers and plants. Many congratulations to all the winners. And indeed to our wonderful Tidy Towns Committee who kept the pressure up the whole time. Following the presentations, some lovely refreshments were served, and all involved enjoy a social evening.   Our town is being completely re-surfaced at the moment, and of course the bottom line is, please keep Millstreet and our approach roads clean and tidy.

The very busy roadworks project in The Square, Millstreet at 11.25pm on Monday, 17th September 2012.   This is very much a work-in-progress project as kindly indicated by a gentleman from www.cmproadplaning.ie – one of the Companies involved in this important task.   Only stage one of the Minor Row roadworks has been completed.   Now stage two is in progress.   It is hoped that within the next 48 hours the full stretch of road from Minor Row down to the Zebra Crossing near Millstreet Post Office will be completed leaving  this section of our town with a fine new and smooth road surface.  See http://www.cmproadplaning.ie/ for further details of CMP Road Planing.  (S.R.)

Genealogy: Nora Reardon, born 1873

Hi, I’ve been researching my ancestry and have found Nora Reardon (or Honora Riordan), my great-grandmother, was baptized on Feb. 16, 1873 and her parents were Eugene Reardon & Catherine Sullivan. She had five siblings, Peter, Cornelius, Bridget, Eugene, John. She came to the U.S. in 1895 on the ship Teutonic. I know the family lived in Millstreet. Are there any relatives still living in Millstreet? I would be very interested to know. Please contact me at <email> if you have any info. Thank you,  Patty Anderson.
