Preparing a Magnificent New Mural at Minor Row, Millstreet
Great credit is due to Millstreet Tidy Towns Association for the dedicated coordination of arranging to put in place a magnificent new Mural at Minor Row. Neil O’Dwyer, Artist Supreme, from Tipperary is presently carrying out the splendid task at the Minor Row entrance to the Fair Field. Well done also to the O’Riordan Family for according permission to place the beautiful Mural on the gable end of their Family home. Millstreet has always been famous in the equestrian world with the two most important Horse Fairs of the year taking place in March and in September. The splendid Mural is therefore most apt for this particular location and indeed for the entire town. When fully completed it will look truly remarkable. New Flowers
Millstreet Tidy Towns have been hard at work planting new flowers all over town bringing a splash of colour to our lives. They are in their usual spots, some new spots, and the street-light pole pots for flowers have been reintroduced!

The results of the anti-litter challenge are out and the Millstreet Tidy Towns are very proud of the results our town has received. We came 2nd in our catigory and 3rd overall 🤩👏. Below is the breakdown of the scoring in this second round, and the full scoreboard thius far. This isn’t the end though … there’s more judges on their way for the final third round! Volunteers are always welcome! ☺️
June Bank Holiday’s Litter Pick-Up
June Bank Holiday’s litter pick-up, and still no improvement in the cigarette butts hitting the streets and pavements of Millstreet. What a pity that so many people are working hard to gain the extra points to put us into the silver medal category. Wake up people, stretch those arms to reach a bin or butt bin instead of dropping on the ground.
Thanks for the extra help for the litter pick up last week. It’s not nice picking up other people’s litter but this group didn’t complain and worked away with a smile. Thanks, we may see a silver medal this September after all.

Second Stage of Cork Co. Council Litter Challenge Begins
Week 4 and today (Monday, 27th May 2019) the second stage of Cork County Council litter challenge begins, finishing on June 5th. Does anyone feel that the Sunday collection of cigarette butts is getting smaller? Is the message getting out there? Please, all litter and cigarette butts, belong in the bin, not on our pavements/ streets/approach roads. Also, dog owners are required by law, to pick up your dogs mess and bin it too, it is considered to be litter and there is a fine if caught not doing so.
Four New Wonderfully Impressive Outdoor Seats Now in Place in Millstreet
With the superb assistance of Millstreet Tidy Towns Association, Cork Co. Council Millstreet Branch and Millstreet Community Council four new hugely impressive outdoor seats have been put in place in Millstreet – one outside St. Patrick’s Church – one near the Eurovision 1993 Display at West End Car Park and two more within the Pollinator Park in Drishane Road – all illustrated in our images below. MCC had presented a cheque from the sale of the 2019 Calendar which helped to fund the cost of the four seats made in Ballingeary from Recycled Plastic. Presentation of Smart Store Survey
This Tuesday on the 14th of May at 8pm 7:30pm. Millstreet Community School students will be presenting the results of their Smart Store survey which they conducted in O’Keeffes Supervalu. This presentation on their findings will be followed up by a talk given by the Cork County Council on sustainability. Part of the Tidy Towns goals is to strive for sustainability and reducing food waste is an important part of that.
All are welcome to attend this event at the Community School.
Tidy Towns Update
This is Week 2 of collecting litter around Millstreet, but no change in cigarette butts – the town would have been knocked out of the Anti-Litter Challenge for these butts alone!
Millstreet Tidy Towns would like to thank those who have helped so far, there was a big improvement outside pubs, thank you! The butts in the picture below were collected all around town, not outside the pubs!
The Litter Challenge competition starts this week, May 13th to May 22nd. Judging begins in Tanyard Wood moving up into town. Judging can be at anytime, any day.
We really appreciate everyone’s help so far, don’t forget we are always looking for more helpers to help show off your town’s beauty!
Please Don’t Throw Your Cigarettes on our Streets
This picture shows just how many cigarette butts were picked off the streets of Millstreet last Sunday morning. Our Tidy Towns loose 1 point for every 10 butts counted by the judges of the county litter and national litter competitions. Smokers, please don’t throw your cigarettes on our streets, we need your help in this competition.
Millstreet Clean-up Day
Millstreet Tidy Towns is delighted to announce that we are organizing a cleanup day for the 27th of April.
We will be meeting in The Square at 10am and plan to finish up around 1pm. There will be refreshments provided after in the Millstreet GAA hall after provided generously by O’Keeffe’s Supervalu.
All necessary equipment will be provided such as Pickers, Bags and High-visibility vests, the only thing you will need to bring is yourselves.
Wonderful Gathering for Unveiling of John & Lena Plaque in Millstreet Town Park
It was John O’Keeffe’s niece – Peg O’Keeffe of Drishane Road, Millstreet – who this Monday morning (11th March 2019) officially unveiled the very impressive plaque at the Bridge in Millstreet Town Park in the presence of a wonderful cross section of local people and visitors including relatives from Mitchelstown of the late Lena. Members of Millstreet Tidy Towns and Members of Millstreet Town Park were also present. Chairman of Millstreet Town Park Committee – Denis Twomey – delivered a superb speech acknowledging the amazing contribution both John and the late Lena made to Millstreet over several years. Denis Hickey and his Team had the ground and plaque placement splendidly prepared. Seven point increase for Millstreet Tidy Towns
Congratulations to all involved with Millstreet Tidy Towns rise from 314 points last year 2017, to 321 points in 2018, which was announced at the national awards this morning. A Bronze medal and only 18 points behind the national winners Listowel.

Smart Store Cooking: Chloé
“I had my dinner from it and mom had her dinner from it and there was still some leftover so I put it into my lunchbox and had it for lunch the next day” – Chloé describes her experience with cooking from the Smart Store Cooking recipe book utilising the ingredients already in her family home. Planning nutritious, easy to follow meals while reducing food waste is something Chloé incorporates into her busy student life.
This Anti Dumping Initiative with Millstreet Tidy Town is in cooperation with Cork County Council and Southern Regional Waste Office. [1]

Magnificent Atmosphere at Launch of Smart Store Cooking
Blessed with glorious weather the large attendance enjoyed a supremely enjoyable afternoon outdoors at O’Keeffe’s Supervalu, Minor Row, Millstreet at the official launch of Smart Store Cooking. Chairman of Millstreet Tidy Towns Association, Derry Sheehan addressed the large crowd and called upon Eily Buckley to cut the launch ribbon. Most impressive stalls, lots of delicious food, face painting, music and the Animal Road Show all helped to make the occasion such a wonderful success. Key Coordinators Joe Fitzgerald and Áine Murphy of Supervalu plus Stephen O’Sullivan of CCC together with members of Millstreet TTA ensured a great occasion where we were delighted to help with the Live Facebook transmission worldwide. Today: Smart Store Cooking
This afternoon, Millstreet Tidy Town are hosting the launch of Smart Store Cooking, a new project enabling people to plan, shop and cook more efficiently, saving on time, while being cheaper on the pocket at the till, cheaper on the pocket for bin collection, and better for the environment by reducing food waste.
This project is hugely important and is at its core part of the sustainability project that will reduce landfill and help in reduction of waste. It is the first of its kind in the country and is being funded by the Anti Dumping initiative 2018. We would very much appreciate if you attend this event. It would be great opportunity for us to showcase how this will work and hopefully you might pick up a few tips.
