And Sincere Thanks To You, Michael – Website Coordinator Supreme

What a wonderful post to view on New Year’s Day 2014 in which Michael Cashman, our Millstreet Website Coordinator Supreme, has acknowledged and expressed heartfelt thanks to the mighty Team involved in helping to make  our Millstreet Website the great success it has become.   But, Michael, without you we could not have come near what has been achieved.  With your amazing Search Engine you have enlightened us all with news and stories about which we would never have heard.    It has been said that we have one of the very best websites one could find and it’s indeed uplifting to hear this.   It has reached these heights because of the constant new developments which you have  introduced such as the facility to link to relevant television programmes, the inclusion of the very informative Twitter feature and the use of the random photos, the comment line and noting the most popular posts at any one time…to mention but a few of the innovations which you have so very professionally brought to reality.    As a Team and on behalf of the many Loyal Visitors to www.millstreet.ie we extend sincere thanks to you, Michael, not only for your superb expertise, consistent kindness in correcting any website problems so quickly and efficiently but for doing all this on a completely voluntary basis and in such a cheerful manner.   Míle, míle buíochas is rath Dé ar an obair iontach.   Happy New Year to Everyone!    (S.R.)

Happy New Year

As 2013 has come to a close, we’d just like to thank everyone that helped us in any way during the year to make Millstreet.ie what it is today, from Seán who is irreplaceable with his camera, Hannelie who is always there in the background, Eily with her Regional Report, Sharon with the Parish Newsletter, Francis for his memories, the local clubs for their updates, those that pass onto us history that would otherwise be lost but who prefer to remain anonymous, to everyone else that sent us articles, photos, or shared information with us during the past year, and to all those who simply visited the site from near and far and continue to stay connected with Millstreet. We’d be a little bit less without any one of ye.

Wishing everyone the very best for you and yours in 2014.

Toughathlon Deferred Until February…Website Update Noted

Not having been aware of the fact that the Toughathlon event had been cancelled before Christmas on account of health and safety reasons and going by the promotional poster I saw in Killarney - I made my way just after midday to the Flynn Family in Drishane Road behind whose home lots of the Toughathlon activities take place in the Drishane Estate. I had cameras and wellingtons at the ready...but noted no activity in the fields. It was only when I met the Flynn Family that I became aware of the cancellation which had been communicated to the potential participants well before Christmas. So it's back again in February 2014 to record the exciting event....and this time I shall indeed check for website updates. Click on the images to enlarge. (S.R.)

Tom Radley at his Forge in the Square

A really wonderful audio clip has come to light recently, of Tom Radley who owned and ran the Forge in the corner of the Square, Millstreet until the 1980s.

It contains his nephew Seán Radley interviewing Tom Jack back in the 1970s, and this short audio recording gives a taste of life in a forge. The Millstreet accent is strong and rich in this one.

Click here to listen to the recording.

Pictured right is a photo taken outside the Forge in the Square, Millstreet back in the 1970s, where blacksmith Tom Radley had just completed placing four shoes on Dan Hallissey’s donkey (Dan lived in Coole/Drishanebeg).

Radleys Engineering, who built the Spire in Dublin (with John & Tommy as Directors), have their roots in this forge.

Below are three further photos of Tom in his  forge, taken in the 1980s.

Click on the photos to see them in full size and click at the very start of the black audio bar below to hear the recording while observing the pictures.

The photo of Tom & Jack outside the forge, with the audio was stumbled upon recently, when they were put online by historian John Tierney. We’d like to thank the Radley family for [read more …] “Tom Radley at his Forge in the Square”

Weather Favours Fun Walk on St. Stephen’s Day 2013

We thank John Tarrant for this special feature on today’s Millstreet G.A.A. Walk.   Click on the images to enlarge.  (S.R.)

The wind and rain abated, the ice thawed to allow a hugely successful staging of the inaugural Millstreet GAA Fun Walk/Run on St. Stephens Day. An impressive turn out added to the enjoyment and a seasonal atmosphere added to the occasion as individuals and families took to the Station Road Glebe and Drishane Road route before sampling refreshments at a finish at club sponsors Colemans. The majority focused primary on the fun walk but interest too on the run aspect, Denis McCaul and Martina Kiely first home followed by Billy Cronin. Thanks to all concerned for contributing to a popular hosting that looks a permanent fixture on the calendar.

Mushera Christmas Day Climb 2013

The annual Christmas Day Climb of Mushera Mountain took place this morning at 10:30am, with another large crowd heading to the top, this year in aid the Courtmacherry life Boats. It was the best weather for many years with not a cloud in the sky, not a puff of wind, and a light covering of snow underfoot, made for a happy atmosphere. All the climbers have sponsorship cards, and the proceeds are going to the Courtmacherry life Boats who themselves will go out in any kind of weather to save lives at sea. Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1198 from Millstreet. Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on wet and windy Christmas Eve, with a hint of snow.

Well we’re nearly there. This is Christmas Eve and people are still rushing around to get those last few things before Santa comes or before its time to condemn the poor old turkey to the oven. Children are just about out of patience at being GOOD, and the air is electric for the last few hours of their long wait.
