The organisers would be delighted if people from the Millstreet locality joined us on this.

Pardon me if I’m not in my usual cheery mood this morning. By now you all know that our councillor Noel Buckley did not get re-elected to Cork County Council. We were dealt a dreadful blow when we heard it. Millstreet without him. Doesn’t seem right, doesn’t seem even safe. Safe from the ravages of to-days risky and uncertain political world.

They had prearranged with us at Millstreet Museum to do some detailed research into Kim’s ancestors this morning, who originally came from Annagloor. They are on a short visit to the Cork & Kerry region, and will be flying home this weekend.

Mick Casey And The Maple Ballroom
Although a fading memory it remains as a source of joy
Mick Casey owned the Maple Ballroom when i was a young boy
As the first Ballroom in Millstreet Town it became known far and wide
Far beyond the borders of the Duhallow countryside
A slightly built wiry looking gray haired fellow long before i reached my prime
Mick Casey was a carpenter and builder one ahead of his time
As a master builder of new homes he became widely known
The seeds of things of beauty in his brilliant mind was sown
Royal Millstreet Welcome for Kerry Rose 2014 Mary Hickey
A magnificent welcome awaited Teacher Mary Hickey of Rathmore on Monday morning when she arrived for work at Presentation N.S., Millstreet following her superb success in Tralee on Friday night when she was selected out of almost thirty beautiful Contestants as the Kerry Rose 2014 in the highly prestigious International Rose of Tralee Competition. We are all so delighted for Mary who would be a totally ideal overall winner in August when the two-night television spectacular takes place – even the official song says “Mary – the Rose of Tralee”! Here we share the marvellous photos of Teacher Joanna O’Connor which allow us to view the Monday morning welcome as well as the actual Friday night event in Tralee where Daithí Ó Sé was the excellent Presenter on the night. The late Teresa Tangney of Main Street, Millstreet and a native of North Kerry who was such a supremely wonderful member of our Teaching Staff in Presentation N.S. until she retired twelve years ago and who has sadly just very recently passed to her Eternal Reward (R.I.P.) would have been so thrilled with this historic occasion when two Kerry Flags and Kerry Balloons adorned the entrance to our school and the “Rose of Tralee” was sung by All with such great enthusiasm for Mary. We now share a selection of Joanna’s much appreciated pictures. Click on the images to enlarge. (S.R.)
We shall feature some further pictures later in the week following our visit to the School on Monday but now we continue to share Joanna’s splendid [read more …] “Royal Millstreet Welcome for Kerry Rose 2014 Mary Hickey”

Thank you, Noel
Perhaps the uplifting Tweet of “Evening Echo” journalist, Pádraig Hoare when referring to the reaction of Cllr. Noel Buckley at the Election Count Centre when final results emerged last night: “(Noel)…Conducted himself with outstanding class. All media present were struck by his dignity and graceful exit. A good man” … so expresses the feeling of so many who over the past ten years have got to witness Cllr. Noel as such an approachable, cheerful and supremely dedicated local Councillor of Cork Co. Council who achieved so much for Millstreet Parish. One clear example relates to his Trojan work in bringing about the reopening of Millstreet Museum and Tourist Information Centre. There were numerous other projects with which Noel has been associated – all of which have had fruitful results. We sincerely wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to both yourself Noel, Margaret and Family. We wish you every happiness, fulfilment and excellent health for the future…and hoping that your hugely regarded commitment to Millstreet will continue for many years to come. Your enormous contribution to our native parish of Millstreet has been utterly inspiring. Míle, míle buíochas. (S.R.)
Great Success for John Paul’s Project

Mark Ellis named at Centre Back for Cork
It’s just been announced that Millstreet hurler Mark Ellis has been picked at centre back (#6) for the Cork team that play Waterford at the weekend. It’s his championship debut, and I can’t remember when the last time (if ever) a Millstreet man played Championship hurling for Cork.
We’d like to wish Mark and the Cork team the very best next Sunday.
