To celebrate the recent Culture Night 2020 – the very talented Millstreet Community Singers presented a superb performance of “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory” in the exquisite setting of Tubrid Holy Well. Special thanks to Coordinator Marie Twomey, James O’Sullivan whose very kind assistance providing power at Tubrid was greatly appreciated and I was privileged to record the wonderful occasion on a recent day blessed with glorious weather. Enjoy the brief recording which was marvellously edited by the CETB Team. We shall be referring to this and the overall Culture Night on “Radio Treasures” tonight (22nd Sept. 2020) on Cork Music Station. (S.R.)
Photographer supreme, Valerie O’Sullivan recently visited Tubrid Holy Well where she captured a wonderful selection of images one of which features on the front page of this week’s “Irish Catholic” national newspaper (20th Aug. 2020). Also included is a photographic feature within the popular weekly newspaper. Valerie’s images oftentimes appear on booklets, calendars etc. within the Diocese of Kerry and far beyond….as well as on national and international newspapers. It was Valerie who took the world famous picture of the laughing Queen Elizabeth with Pat O’Connell at Cork’s English Market. Pat Breen who coordinates the distribution of the Catholic Papers here in Millstreet Parish indicates that extra copies of the “Irish Catholic” will soon be available in St. Patrick’s Church, Millstreet. For just €2.00 we encourage you to obtain your own copy with its local relevance this week. Many thanks to Fr. Paddy, to Mary and to Pat for alerting us to the special Tubrid feature. On Tuesday, 19th June 2018 Fr. Paddy O’Byrne celebrated his annual Mass at Tubrid marking the anniversary of his Ordination to the Priesthood in 1960. People travelled from afar for this special Mass such as Fr. Paddy’s brother Kevin from Skibbereen, his brother Billy from Co. Wicklow and his sister Marie from Kanturk as well as many others such as the son of James O’Sullivan – Matthew who had just arrived back from Thailand. Patricia Guerin, Breda Fitzgerald and James O’Sullivan added a new dimension this year – a picnic after the Mass creating such an uplifting atmosphere. Fr. Paddy in his superb homily recalled many wonderful memories and hoped that Our Lady would bring everyone back again for the 2019 occasion in Tubrid. Here we share a selection of images (11) from the splendid evening. Click on the images to enlarge. (S.R.) [read more …] “Fr. Paddy O’Byrne’s Annual Mass in Tubrid Plus Picnic This Year”

Patrick W. O’Leary of Louisville, USA had in August (as well as others) suggested that an opportunity should be given to people nationally and internationally who may at any time wish to contribute towards the upkeep of Millstreet Museum and Millstreet Website …. and to this effect we have arranged to set up an electronic system with the Bank of Ireland here in Millstreet (where our Museum/Website account exists) whereby anyone can transfer a desired donation to the account by just quoting at one’s own Bank our relevant numbers which are: IBAN No.: IE22 BOFI 9058 0334 0531 43 and the BIC No.: BOFIIE2D. This was mentioned in August and recently a most kind lady with Millstreet connections and who resides in USA contributed a very generous €100.00 through the above Bank Account. Sincere thanks to this much appreciated Donor who is our first person to contribute through this newly introduced Bank system for our Museum and Website. Please note also in a recent Tweet that our Liscahane Ogham Stone at the Museum is now available to view in amazing 3D following a visit by two superb Experts from Dublin and Cork Universities to the Museum over the Summer. (S.R.)
In the interest of health and safety a maximum of 44 cars will be permitted to park within the Tubrid environs for the annual Tubrid Mass which takes place at 7:30pm on Friday, 26th May 2017. This traffic arrangement will allow important access should any emergency vehicle be called upon. We thank James for alerting us to this new parking plan for the annual Mass. (S.R.)
Last November the local papers reported that small levels of cryptosporidium had been found in the Millstreet water supply, despite the fact that an assessment in 2015 rated the risk of cryptosporidium as “very high”. The EPA recommended that even though there was no immediate health risk, Irish Water should install an adequate barrier against the parasite to ensure the town’s water supply is adequately disinfected at all times.
Thankfully Irish Water are reporting today that “Upgrade works are underway in Millstreet in North Cork to provide a new UV disinfection system at the treatment plant.” [theCork.ie]
Now, since UV disinfection replaces chlorine disinfection in other locations, wouldn’t it be great if this meant that our water will taste better when the install in completed 🙂 (Our water is disinfected by chlorination and fluoridation) [read more …] “New UV Disinfection System currently being installed”

Mary Fagan of the “Horizons” Radio Programme on Radio Kerry visited Millstreet on June 9th last and was given a short tour of Millstreet by Seán Radley, which included the Carnegie Hall, the Millstreet Museum, and St.Patrick’s Church. She also interviewed Fr. Paddy Byrne (pictured right), and James O’Sullivan (on Tubrid). The programme also featured music by Donal Linehan, and a song from Annmarie O’Riordan. It was broadcast on Radio Kerry, Sunday morning July 31st, but the podcast only appeared today. You can listen to it below:
James O’Sullivan had superbly prepared the altar and overall setting while Denis Lane kindly provided the excellent public address system. The Choir from the general Sliabh Luachra setting provided the very suitable musical background…and the many birds from trees on high chimed in harmony! Let’s observe some more images. Miracles at Tubrid
Around the fire grate on Winter nights I often heard the old man of stories tell
Stories of miracles that did occur at Tubrid’s Holy Well
Of people who were blind to light who suddenly could see
He did impress on my young mind how amazing this place must be
He said the Tubrid waters has cures for every known disease
And it even cured an allergy that one old bloke had to fleas
It cured people of cancer and it cured people of gout
And drinking Tubrid water cured one of warts in the mouth
