Dia is Mhuire diobh go leir a Cairde and welcome to News Report 1038 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this rather wet and windy Tuesday morning.

On behalf of our Community I want to congratulate Billy & Ellen Sheehan of the Wallis Arms Hotel on the birth of their twins, a boy and a girl, at the weekend. May God bless them all .

Once again the three-day, Self-Build Show  drew great crowds to the Green Glens over the weekend. People came from far and near to exhibit and to see.

There’s a strong possibility that the great machinery Show will make its annual visit in January, but before that on December 3rd we will have a Gala Concert at Drishane Castle. Proceeds in aid of Children’s Charities.

Many congratulations to our brilliant Tidy Towns Committee on getting no less than two awards for their great work over the Summer months. At a function which was held in Killarney recently they received a cert and a cheque for €800, for coming second in the North Cork Region of the National Tidy Towns Competition. And at a further function which was held in Ballincollig they were awarded the Muintir na Tire, Pride of Community prize for their great work on the Wildlife area, Drishane Rd. Please continue to help and support them .

Game Protection Cup

The tragic death of former Irish Coursing Club chief executive Jerry Desmond recently has shocked the nationwide greyhound industry. An article in the Nationalist Newspaper this week also tells us that back in 1926, a dog owned by Jerry’s fathers dog “Mile Stream Boy” was the first man to win the Game Protection Cup when it was first run at Millstreet Coursing in 1926.

Last year, the Game Protection Cup was won by our own Donie O’Mahony with his dog Bridge Spirit, who also added the Oaks Trial Stake with his bitch Becky at the same meet.

Coursing in Millstreet this year is scheduled for Thursday & Friday – December 30th &31st.
