U21 Football Championship Tonight 8pm

Millstreet play Kanturk in Millstreet Town Park tonight under lights at 8pm in the U21 Football Championship. (Note this is a change of venue as it was scheduled previously for Kiskeim)

The appealing clash of Kanturk and Millstreet takes place in Millstreet on Friday night where both sides will look to emerging talent as future development. Kanturk fell to Newmarket in the last two campaigns but victory in the divisional JAFC will instil confidence in a side built around county players Lorcan McLoughlin and Aidan Walsh.

Millstreet look to promising talent that emerged at minor level, fronted by Mark Ellis and Darren Sheehan though though they will lack the experience of their opponents.

Result: Millstreet won by the solitary point 1-8 to 0-10 in what was said to be a superb match and a really good display by the Millstreet lads. Will try to get a write up for this in the next few days.

Other results in the U21 Football Championship were Newmarket 0-9 Boherbue 0-7; Kiskeam 2-4 Dromtarriffe 0-9; Knocknagree 1-8 Cullen 0-10; Lyre 3-7 Kilbrin 0-6.

Eily broadcasts her 1,000th report

A LADY at the heart and soul of all current affairs in Millstreet celebrated a very important milestone in her career on Tuesday as regional reporter for C103 Radio Station when she visited the studio in Mallow and read report No 1,000 live on air.

Eily Buckley was warmly welcomed by presenters Patricia Messenger and John Paul McNamara, who she speaks to regularly in her weekly link up with the station. Eily’s colleagues from LTV2 local television Sean Radley and cameraman William Fitzgerald were also on hand to record this historic occasion.

The regional reports, broadcast weekly from several locations around the county, are a vital link for listeners, and people like Eily are invaluable, said presenter Patricia Messenger.

Behind Ballydaly’s vibrancy is its Community Hall — that’s the hub centre to local life. And when the Hall reached its 50th Anniversary, friends and associates convened to honour the special occasion.

Through Chairman Tom O’Sullivan and Secretary Ritchie O’Connor, the Hall remains in active use and splendidly kept. The foresight to Ballydaly Hall surfaced on the endeavours of a committee coming together to construct a meeting place.

FETAC Level 5 Organic Horticulture Course – Enrollment

Picture of FETAC CertificateCo. Cork VEC Back To Education Initiative (BTEI) is currently offering places on its Organic Horticulture Course in Mallow Return To Education Centre. This FETAC Level 5 course will take place every Monday, starting February 22nd 2010 from 10.00am to 3.00pm. First year modules include Organic Production Principles, Food Crops and Communications with all eight FETAC modules offered over 2 years. Our first-year participants will be advancing onto their second year, while our second-years will be qualifying.

The programme has a very strong emphasis on practical organic skills, as well as classroom based tutoring. Participants gain practical experience in all aspects of organic growing from soil preparation and sowing, no-dig growing systems, crop rotation, pest and disease management, through to harvesting.

Fondest Greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this very,very, special Tuesday morning.

This is Shrove Tuesday, so we can all stuff ourselves with those lovely pancakes, before we give up some of our favourite things for the six weeks of Lent  which starts to-morrow with Ash Wednesday. And it’s a day of  Fast and Abstinance. Holy Ashes will be distributed  at  Millstreet Church at Masses at 10am and 7pm. In Cullen at 7.30 and Ballydaly at 8pm. Trocaire Boxes are available at the end of the church.

As this is the milestone 1,000th edition of the Millstreet Regional Report, it would be nice if everyone left a nice comment in appreciation of Eily and all those involved over the years in producing the report week-in-week-out. Click here to leave a comment

Cullen’s golden jubilee of rebirth

FIFTY years of gaelic games was acknowledged at a celebratory function by Cullen GAA in the Dromhall Hotel, Killarney on Saturday night.

When the Duhallow Board was set up in 1933, a GAA Club was formed in Cullen, the first President was Dr. Pat O’Callaghan, who twice won Olympic gold medals. Success came early to the club on capturing Duhallow Junior Football titles in 1936 and 1939.

During the war years, Cullen GAA fell into decline. However in 1959, Cullen GAA to re-establish itself as a dynamic outlet within its community. At times, success has been lean but with excellent playing facilities and a flourishing juvenile structure, the fortunes of Cullen GAA came on leaps and bounds.

Current chairman Dan Dennehy explained the second coming of Cullen GAA stemmed from a Vocational School in the Village, one of the teachers had three All-Ireland medals with Cork.

Snow In Millstreet Today

Two inches of snow today in Millstreet Town
Through the almost deserted Main Street cars slowly move up and down
And in the calm of the afternoon blanketed white
The old hill of Clara a beautiful sight.

On a phone call from Jimmy Sullivan in Millstreet faraway
He told me Duhallow is snowbound today
The bushes and trees and every hedgerow
Are heavily laden with January snow.

Such news took me back to when I was a boy
In Winter the snowball games I did enjoy
With my young friends from many decades ago
By the old town where into young men we did grow.

The snowfalls in Duhallow live in my memory
In front gardens of homes where children lived snowmen for to see
The children with each other used to compete
At the building of the finest snowman in Millstreet.
.
Jimmy Sullivan told me so in a phone call
In Millstreet today a two inches snowfall
Snow on roofs, streets and roads, fields and on every bush and tree
It must be a wonder of Nature to see.

The Bould Thady Quill

Sung by Tim Browne from Kanturk. In his own words:

“This is a version of the great Cork song written over 100 years ago by Johnny Tom Gleeson. Recorded for “Mutiny in the County” a solo album made in 2003. The lyrics were published in the 1993 edition of the wonderful Seanchas Duthalla Magazine in an article written by one James Chisman. It is a mighty song and many versions of it, even one in the Irish language, are known. I particularily like this version because of its Land League component and Chisman mentioned in his article that this version is thought to be the nearest lyrically to the original version. The song has undergone many changes and additions since the original believed to have been written in the 1880’s and first published around the early 1920’s. It is a much favoured drinking song possibly due to the references to drinking black porter as fast as you’ll fill etc., Some extra lines have been added to this version so perhaps in one hundred years time or so Thade Quill will have become an internationally recognised academic, and maybe even an assissinated President of America…………….!!!”

The Monthly Meeting of the Community Council will be held at the Youth Centre tonight starting at 8.30. All members please attend. The Community Council Awards Social will be held at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Friday March 12th.

A note here from our clergy to say a million thanks to all those who supported their recent church door collection in aid of Haiti which amounted to just under €8,000. The money will be forwarded to Trócaire, without delay.

MILLSTREET Taekwon Do confirmed their growing status on a run of success at the Munster championships hosted in Tralee.

Set up 15 years ago, Millstreet is a well established club with many students training under Master Dalton with over 10 years.

Master Don Dalton as the Club Instructor is one of Ireland’s best known martial artists and is the driving force behind one of the country’s largest organisations, the Irish United Taekwon Do Federation (IUTF)

Macra Waxing Fundraiser

“Cleanaway Smurf” wins in Clonmel

"Cleanaway Smurf" the Grace Bruton Champion Bitch Stakes at the National Coursing Championships in Clonmel 2010, part owned by Finbarr O’Connor, Millstreet.

She ran at Clonmel last year also, under the guidance of Con O’Connor Ballydaly, but didn’t fare so well then.
