Millstreet Christmas Market

Hi Everyone,

The Christmas Market is on this weekend. We have 27 stands with a huge variety of arts, crafts, fashion, photography, home wear, plants and centre pieces, cards and a million other things I can’t name.  The hall has been decorated festively and we will have a tea room to contemplate your purchases.
We would really appreciate it if you could drop in on Friday evening after work (from 4 – 9pm).  The Ladies and Gentlemen involved in organising the concert in Drishane will be there in full costume and we will have mulled wine waiting for you.
While we are not having an official opening it would be great to have lots of support on the first night with the hope that you will spread the word and your friends and relations will pop in over the weekend.
Thank you,
Members of the Christmas Lights Committee
Noirin Twomey, Joseph Lawlor, Catherine Pomeroy, Nicola Mc Mahon

Con Murphy Was A Man From Ballydaly

Con Murphy was a man from Ballydaly he lived about four miles from Millstreet Town
The first Irish person executed for possessing arms by the then Government of the British Crown
By all accounts a brave and decent person his life was cruelly cut short in his prime
But his merciless judges gave to Ireland one more hero whose legend lives on through the years of time
.
I knew old men who remembered Con Murphy they described him as a brave and mighty man
He loved his Country Ireland with a passion and wished to rid it of the Black and Tan
The British Government abused their rule in Ireland [read more …] “Con Murphy Was A Man From Ballydaly”

A Lot of Men

A lot of men in my young years in Millstreet did like their sports and did enjoy their grog
And they shlauned peat to warm their family homes in Winter in early Summer in Gneeves mountain bog
Around their fire grates on nights in the depths of Winter current affairs were discussed and other things they did recall
Such as politics and sporting greats and of great teams and games of hurling and gaelic football
They told stories of the War of Independence in Sliabh Luachra and Duhallow such as the ambush at Tureengarriffe Glen
Of a battle celebrated and often written about of the bravery of Sean Moylan and his men [read more …] “A Lot of Men”

Regional Report 1040 – 23rd December 2010

by

Eily Buckley

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1040 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this cold and frosty Tuesday morning.

The Feast of the Presentation was celebrated over the weekend, and  in it’s honour a special Mass was concelebrated in our Church on Friday with all the pupils, teachers and staff of our Presentation National school attending. The Children performed a lovely pageant depicting the life of the Foundress of the Presentation Order, Nano Nagle, and their music and singing filled the air with lovely sounds. Sean Radley was there to film it and I will be screened on LTV2 in the near future.

All  during  last week our shops had offers galore for our special Shopping Week, with many people taking advantage of the occasion to stock up on certain items.  Next up will be the Christmas Art Fair which will be held in the GAA Hall from December 3 to 5th.

Women’s Health and Well Being Information Evening will be held at the James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket on tomorrow Wednesday Evening, starting at 8pm.

How we vote

… Cork NW is a very split constituency. There is a respectable Labour vote in Macroom town and Ballincollig/Ovens has a lot of swing voters who will occasionally go Labour. However, the north of the constituency around Millstreet and Kanturk votes as though the civil war is still on…

Taken from the the discussion boards of the Peoples Republic of Cork website, where the discussion is warming up with all the current political turmoil in the country.

Indeed the ability to laugh at ourselves may be the only thing that can save us from losing our minds this time around!

Ray Ryan Honoured in Mallow

Journalist supreme and superb Correspondent in the "Irish Examiner" and "Evening Echo" Ray Ryan (seated 4th from left) was given a magnificent retirement reception at the Hibernian Hotel, Mallow on Sat. 20th Nov. 2010 by a very large group of colleagues from the world of newspapers, radio and television. Ray, in the presence of his wife, Maura and his son, Raymond, received a beautiful framed painting on an equestrian theme. Donal Hickey was M.C. for the occasion where some truly brilliant and witty speeches were delivered. Highlights of the evening will be seen on LTV2 Millstreet at a later point. (Seán)

IRD Duhallow Information Meeting at Wallis Arms Hotel

Helen O'Sullivan (with book) of IRD Duhallow was at the Wallis Arms Hotel, Millstreet on Wednesday, 17th Nov. 2010 where she gave a very interesting and most informative presentation to a representative audience from the overall Millstreet area on the regulations governing the availability of grants from IRD Duhallow funding.
