Weather Interrupts LTV Transmission Tonight
Due to a loss of links which transmits our weekly LTV programmes … a loss caused by weather conditions…LTV1 Macroom area is not available in the Duhallow and Sliabh Luachra areas tonight. Hopefully, by the repeat showing on Sunday, transmission will have been restored. Many thanks to Dan Joe Kelleher of LTV for this update. (S.R.)
Regional Report 1204
by
Eily Buckley
Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news Report 1204 from Millstreet.
Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this calm Tuesday morning. With the daffodils and snowdrops pushing up through the ground filling us with hope for the future.
Baoichas Le Dia we have come through another week of high winds and heavy rains with no more than a few flooded roads to show for it. We are indeed blessed by our placing on the map. Our hearts go out to those whose lives have been torn apart by recent events. We can only watch and pray.
Yesterday, Monday February 3rd was the Feast of St Blaise. The day for the blessing of the throats. A very large crowd attended the 7.30 evening Mass after which our Canon John FitzGerald individually blessed the throat of every person young and not so young in the church. And in his prayers for the Faithful he prayed for the safety of everyone during this trecherous weather.

Concluding Our Survey Regarding LTV Signal
We now share our final communication regarding our recent trip throughout the area so as to gauge the quality of the LTV on-air signal. From the Sandpit House we proceeded into the Rathcoole area where the signal varied and within the village itself we did not succeed receiving any signal. Onwards to Kilcorney where on the higher ground areas we received an excellent signal. As we travelled towards Tooreenbawn and Mushera and into quite a good stretch of the Aubane area the signal was good. Top of Tullig got a splendid signal as did the area right down to Tullig Cross on Drishane Road. The town itself, Priest’s Cross and some areas east of the town all got good signals. The town gets its signal from Channel 35. A perfect signal along Clara Road and Mount Leader. Thus ended our brief research tour of the Duhallow and Sliabh Luachra areas. I’ve shared these findings so as to give an idea of where best the LTV signal is available. Best to have the advice of one’s own Television Installer to determine the best way to obtain the best signal in your area. As indicated, transmission is available on two channels – Channel 30 (from Carriganima area) and Channel 35 (from western side of town). Very clear transmission of the weekly LTV2 Millstreet programmes is of course available on the Millstreet website www.millstreet.ie . Special thanks to Dan Joe Kelleher of LTV for sharing his expertise, time and technical equipment in helping to determine the quality of the LTV signal in our brief survey and thank you for reading our reports on the findings. (S.R.)
Investigating the Quality of LTV Signal
So we come to the third section of our recent investigation regarding the quality of LTV reception in the Duhallow and Sliabh Luachra areas. Having firstly visited the new transmitter setting to the west of Millstreet town to determine that it was working well we continued our journey westwards. Perfect signal was obtained as we passed Killarney Road….Next best area for reception was at Ballydaly Church. We also obtained a good signal in the Knocknagullane area. The signal then weakened until we reached Knocknaloman Cross. It was clear to Dan Joe that a large area of the Caherbarnagh area were receiving a good signal. The signal strengthened as we came close to the Cadbury Factory and on the eastern side of Rathmore Village. Apparently Gneeveguilla, Knocknagree and Boherbue obtain quite a good signal from Channel 35 UHF and some areas receive the broadcast from both Channels 35 and 30. As we travelled along the New Line from Rathmore, passing Carrigaline and proceeding onwards to the Sandpit House we noted that it was Channel 30 which brings the transmission from beyond the Cullen Crossroads. More sharing of our findings tomorrow. (S.R.)

Table Quiz Total
Thanks to everyone who supported the table quiz which took place on Friday 31st January in The Wallis Arms. An incredible total of €1618 was raised to help pay for the six students who are going to Lourdes at Easter with the Irish Pilgrimage Trust.
A lot of people were thanked at the quiz but it is worth mentioning a few again. Firstly, John Tarrant for providing such a great set of questions – not too difficult, not too easy – and four sets of tie-breakers, all of which were needed! Secondly, Billy, Nigel and the staff at The Wallis Arms for making us all welcome and for being so accommodating. Thirdly, all those who sponsored raffle prizes. A list of all the shops and businesses who did so was read out on the night. Lastly, to everyone who came along to take part or help out. It was a really great effort!
The Execution of Captain Con Murphy
Towards the end of 1920 nine members of the Millstreet battalion whose names were on the ‘murder list’ of the Tans, formed a flying squad or small flying column. The late Jeremiah Crowley was in charge of this body of men and under his direction training in military operations was carried out. The squad was reinforced considerably later on, and an effective column of close on forty men was formed. On the night of 3 January 1921, the squad, which then consisted of nine men all told arrived in Rathmore. The late Con Murphy, having arranged billets, went home to his father’s house in Ballydaly – a quarter of a mile from the nearest house where the squad was in billets. At about nine o’clock on the morning of 4 January, the scouts protecting the squad reported the presence of a considerable force of military and Royal Irish Constabulary raiding in Ballydaly. The little squad immediately got into a position of defence. Retreat was out of the question as the only way out was [read more …] “The Execution of Captain Con Murphy”

Local Television Signal….Common Questions
As promised we share the first part of our findings following a trip throughout the Duhallow and Sliabh Luachra areas yesterday.
One of the most Common Questions being asked about LTV reception:
“We received quite a good reception on air up to last year…Now we no longer seem to be able to receive any signal. How do we now continue to receive the weekly broadcasts?”
One of the main reasons for this is that we used a VHF transmitter from the Mushera area for years. Use of VHF was no longer permitted from last year thus losing that signal which used to travel far to areas like Taur, Newmarket and could even be received on high ground in areas like Dingle and Castleisland. So now we can only use the UHF signal which does not travel as far as VHF. The new signal we’ve been using in this area is Channel 31 UHF from the Carriganima area (This is on a different frequency from last year). However, lots of areas in Millstreet Town and to the west of the town and beyond could not avail of that signal so Dan Joe Kelleher of LTV suggested that a transmitter placed to the west of the town could pick up the Carriganima signal and redistribute it to a large section of the town and to a large wide area to the west of Millstreet including Gneeveguilla, parts of Rathmore, Knocknagree, the New Line (Rathmore to Sandpit House Road) etc.. Although we did not have funds for this development we decided in the spirit of providing to a wider audience not only LTV2 Millstreet but also LTV1 and the Sunday Specials, to personally finance this extension of the on-air signal. We were also very fortunate to receive the supremely kind permission of a local family to transmit from their setting in ideal conditions. Use of the electricity in constant use for this facility is gauged by meter. The signal from this new transmitter located to the west of the town is proving most successful and is available on Channel 35 UHF. When LTV is not being transmitted Dan Joe broadcasts the Sky Channel EWTN (the religious channel) on a 24/7 basis. Tomorrow we shall share how we found the quality of the signal in the areas we visited and we also explore the very real advantage of online transmission as illustrated by the success of the placing of our weekly LTV2 programmes on You Tube (dedicatedly uploaded by Bernard) making the broadcast available worldwide. If you have any questions please email millstreetmuseum @eircom.net …. (S.R.)

Researching Local Television Reception Throughout Area
On Thursday, 30th Jan. 2014 Dan Joe Kelleher and I travelled throughout the Duhallow and Sliabh Luachra areas to determine the extent and the quality of LTV reception now that an extra transmitter has been put in place near Millstreet to enhance the signal reception for Millstreet Town and in regions west of the town. We shall communicate our findings over the [read more …] “Researching Local Television Reception Throughout Area”

Programme 229 which will be broadcast tommorrow night Thursday January 30 at 10.00pm with a repeat of this show being transmitted next Sunday Evening February 2 at 8.00pm is now online. You can now watch our Ninth Programme of the Season right here at millstreet.ie or on the LTV2 Facebook Page
To receive reception one needs to retune analogue settings (available in menu “settings”). When scanning is complete one will now have the new channel – either UHF Channel 30 or UHF Channel 35 (or both in certain areas of Millstreet). All this depends on how strong the signal is in any given area. The UHF Channel 30 signal comes from the Carriganima direction whereas the UHF Channel 35 signal comes from the western side of Millstreet Town. This is now saved and is presently transmitting the EWTN (Religious) Channel.

Dia is Mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1203 from Millstreet.Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this wild and wintery Tuesday morning.
The bad weather did not deter the supporters of the annual dip in the Blackwater on Saturday. But in the interest of safety a shallow part of the swollen river was cordoned off where a great number of brave people dipped in the icy waters for a good cause. Proceeds will go to the Cork County Association for Mental Health Care.
Well done to all concerned.
A monster Table Quiz will be held at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Friday next January 31st to raise funds for some of our 5th year students who are going to Lourdes at Easter as helpers with the IHCPT. They deserve our best support.
