The Brits, The Blitz and The Bedwarmer

Update (8th Nov): Listen to the documentary podcast from RTÉ:

—-
On Saturday afternoon (7th Nov 2pm) the “Documentary on One” is called “The Brits, The Blitz and The Bedwarmer” – it’s a documentary on Elizabeth Bowen, who was a famous novelist and a much-loved landlord of her ancestral estate Bowenscourt in Kildorrery. But it asks the question was she more – was she a British spy?

Jack Lane of the Aubane Historical Society is interviewed in the documentary. His connection is that in 2008 The Aubane Historical Society released a publication entitled: “Notes from Éire” – Espionage Reports to Winston Churchill, 1940-42 (by Brendan Clifford), an account of Irish writer Elizabeth Bowen’s World War II intelligence reports to Britain. The book marked an abandonment of the [read more …] “The Brits, The Blitz and The Bedwarmer”

Ann Cronin

Ann Cronin, Clara RdSo humble and gentle and free of conceit
She was one of the nicest people of Millstreet
So sad for to learn Ann Cronin has passed away
In the quietness of St Mary’s she is at peace today

A good mother to her children and to the late Kevin Cronin a good wife
Ann Corkery her maiden name she lived an honorable life
The youngest of three girls a sister to Margaret and Noreen
In the past in Millstreet’s West End out walking she often was seen

But this is going back many Seasons in time
When i was much younger and nearer to my life’s prime
And though Ann is one of many i have not seen for years
I feel sure her parting from life would not have gone without tears

For she was a beautiful person indeed
And of more of her kind the Human World is in need
She never sought the limelight or of anyone had a bad word to say
And about her she did have a beautiful way

Eily’s weekly update – 2nd November

eily1

Millstreet was ablaze with sparkling lights and children in fancy weird looking outfits on Saturday night last for Halloween. To add to the eerie atmostphere the weather was foggy, and to crown it all the street lighting in Pound Hill, and Murphy’s terrace were not working.  There was a marked increase in the number of those taking part, so shops selling the regalia and goodies did a roaring trade. The good news is that there were no mishaps or accidents. By all accounts householders treated the little visitors very well and somehow managed to have something for everyone. Well done all round.

A Model Car show was held at Dromtariffe Hall on Sunday and was very well supported. For many it was a first and they were pleasantly surprised at the turn-out. Our LTV2 crew were there to record it  and their findings will be included in one of their future programs. They can be viewed of UTube anytime, and a small connecting wire will display it on any TV screen.

Meanwhile Macroom Local TV continues to send out their programs on local TV, transmitting from Clara Mountain. It can be accessed on the religious station on any television, on Wednesday nights and Sunday evenings starting as early as 5.30.

100th anniversary of the visit of Terence MacSwiney

MacswineyTerence MacSwiney became the full-time organiser of the Irish Volunteers in Cork in 1915 after the split with Redmond’s National Volunteers. He toured the county and spoke at Millstreet, helping to set up the companies that were later the backbone of the local resistance during the War of Independence:

“November 1st 1915, was a Fair Day in Millstreet. It was also a Church Holiday. Arrangements were made for a parade of the small group of local Volunteers and for a public meeting. Cork Brigade Headquarters sent Terence MacSwiney, who addressed the parade and the members of the public asking for recruits for the Irish Volunteers. Mr. Jeremiah O’Riordan, Corner House, a veteran of the Land League and an old Fenian, presided. As a result of the meeting three Companies were formed immediately, Millstreet, Rathduane and Mushera. Keale Company were established about a week later.”

(Con Meaney, Witness Statement No. 64 in the Bureau of Military History as published in “The ‘Boys’ of the Millstreet Battalion Area” by the AHS.)
