Gorgeous drone video footage of the Blackwater River at the Bóing near Millstreet, in July 2018. That July will be remembered as the year of the heat wave and drought, thus the fields aren’t as green as they might normally look, and the water level is quite low. The bridge was built in 2015 as part of the Beara Breifne Way, Ireland’s longest way-marked trail.
A huge congratulations to Michael Thornton who has just completed the Beara Breifne Way this past Wednesday. He started the walk from Dursey Island on December 28th, and is pictured below with his son Michael at the monument to the Beara Breifne Way, beside the O’Rourke Castle in Leitrim, which marks the end of the walk. The Thorntons run Coolefield House, a B&B on the outskirts of Millstreet which is on the Beara Breifne Way!
After departing Millstreet last week, Breifne Early took over the @Ireland twitter account for a week. One lovely photo he added was taken from Curracahill, of the back of Clara, looking towards Mallow (map). He is currently near Tipperary Town. Keep track of his progress on his Facebook Page

In October 2010, stuck in a negative work environment, severely overweight, single, and feeling the world and would be better off without him, Breifne Earley made the decision to end his own life. But, less than five years later he was first across the finish line of the longest endurance sports event in the world, the 30,000km long World Cycle Race.
This is the extraordinary and inspirational story of how one man stepped back from the brink of suicide, redesigned his life and then spent sixteen months cycling through 27 countries on 5 continents with 3 robberies, 3 crashes and 44 flat tyres to become a living, breathing example of the life-saving message “It’s okay not to feel okay.”
It’s some story, but Breifne’s next challenge sees him pass through Millstreet in ten days time, as he walks the Beara-Breifne Way. Setting off on December 31st on from Glengarriffe, he will be staying in Millstreet January 2nd, and leaving first thing the following morning, to arrive in Leitrim on January 14th.
He deserves to be welcomed here, as well as elsewhere along his trip. (Breifne has added: “all offers of help (beds, meals, company, etc) greatly appreciated”. History was made this morning, as the long awaited bridge over the Blackwater was put in place at Dooneen. Yesterday placement of the span of the bridge (made up of three concrete sections, each 26m in length) met with a blip as strong winds prevented the 360 ton crane from placing the concrete slabs on the previously prepared abutments.
Below are a photos by Michelle of the bridge being put in place, and also a number of photos from around the site yesterday. She was one of a small crowd who had gathered to see this historic link put in place.
With the current good weather, work has continued with the construction of the abutments for the new bridge over the Blackwater at the Boeing which is part of the Breifne Beara Way. Work has been progressing this last week on the new pedestrian, cycling and wheelchair access bridge over the Blackwater at the Boeing, at the exact location where Donal O’Sullivan Beara and a thousand of his people and soldiers crossed the river Blackwater in 1603, as they fled the forces of Elizabeth 1st who had . The bridge is one of the final links to the The Beara Breifne Way which stretches from West Cork to Cavan. Thanks to Michelle, and also to Tom from TMC Photography for the photos.
