Kathleen O’Sullivan, Ballydaly – First Anniversary & Acknowledgement

On the First Anniversary of our mother’s passing, we her family wish to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to all those who sympathised and supported us on our sad loss.

During her 10 year illness, Mammy was helped by so many great people . A special thanks to all the Public Health Nurses, especially  Elaine Reardon, Áine O’Riordan and Chris O’ Donoghue, Occupational Therapist, Doctors from Tullig Medical Center and the wonderful home helps, Eileen Coakley, Eileen Murphy, Margaret Cronin, Bebe White, and our neighbour Sheila McSweeney which gave us the opportunity to keep Mammy at home as long as was possible.

Her final years were spent in Millstreet Community Hospital in great comfort thanks to the tremendous care and respect she received from Margaret Collins and her staff.

Our thanks to those who sent Mass and Sympathy cards, floral tributes and those who wrote messages of condolence on R.I.P.ie .

We would like to express our appreciation for the support and kindness of our neighbours, friends and relatives and all who lined the roadside, those who came and waited outside the funeral home and the Church and everyone who joined the funeral Mass online.

We would like to acknowledge the great work carried out by Davy Tarrant and his staff. They always ensure that everything goes smoothly for a grieving family during what is a very stressful and and sad time and for this we are truly thankful.

We would like to give a special mention to Fr. Jack Fitzgerald.  Fr.  Jack called to Gortavehy for many years and that meant a lot to all the family.  We would like to thank him especially for doing such a beautiful Mass.   It gave us great consolation to have her honoured in such a lovely way.  We would also like to thank Sharon and Julie, Jerry Doody and all who contributed to making the Mass so special.

As it is impossible to thank everyone individually please accept this as a token of our sincere gratitude.

Anniversary Mass will be held on Sunday 23rd January at 11.30am in St. Patrick’s Church Millstreet.

Wonderful Gobnait Twomey is 100 Years Young Today!

Thursday, 20th January 2022 marked the truly magnificent occasion of the 100th Birthday of the very wonderful and hugely popular Gobnait Twomey of Murphy’s Terrace, Millstreet.   It was indeed a great honour to be present during the afternoon at the very welcoming home of Gobnait when Canon John Fitzgerald, P.P. arrived to officially present the President’s Letter and Cheque and when many great neighbours and friends called to extend sincere congratulations on such an historic occasion.   Here we share some 21 images from our visit.  Tap on the pictures to enlarge.   Heartfelt congratulations to such a True Lady and Friend of All – the wonderful Gobnait Twomey whose amazing spirit and attitude to life is truly inspirational.  (S.R.)

Easter Competition Millstreet Primary Schools Parents Association

Millstreet Primary Schools ‘Easter Nature Hunt’ Competition is open to all local Primary Schools, closing date Friday 2nd April 2021.

The children need to take photos of themselves with all the items to prove they have completed the Hunt, and send them into the Parents Assn’s Facebook page or email address, then completed entries will be entered into a draw on Saturday, for some lovely Goodies, just in time for Easter.  It means you don’t have to go rushing out to do this, just get your entry in by next Friday 2nd April evening to get into the draw.

Prizes have been sponsored by Herlihy Centra Millstreet and O’Keeffe’s Supervalu Millstreet, the Parents Association would like to say ‘Thank You’ for the prizes.

Patrick (Pat) and Nora O’Connor, Kilcummin & Ballydaly

Patrick (Pat) and his beloved wife Nora (nee Lynch, late of Ballydaly, Millstreet, Co Cork), died 1 day apart, Patrick (Pat) on the 20th and Nora on the 21st February 2021. Much loved Dad and Mom of Dan (USA), Paudie, Noel and the late Michael. Sadly missed by their family, grandchildren Padraic Seán, Dearbhla, Megan and Adam, daughters-in-law, Nora’s sister Kit, the Dineen and O’Leary nieces and nephews, relatives, kind neighbours and their many friends. Predeceased by Patrick’s sister Rita and Nora’s sister Mary and brother Michael. “May They Rest In Peace”.

HOUSE PRIVATE PLEASE

In accordance with Government and HSE guidelines and in the interest of public health, a Private Family Funeral will take place for Pat and Nora in Our Lady Of Lourdes Church, Kilcummin. Their Requiem Mass will be live streamed on churchservices.tv/kilcummin on Tuesday morning at 11.00am, burial afterwards in Holy Cross Cemetery, Kilcummin. Pat and Nora’s funeral cortège will be leaving their family home on Tuesday morning at 10.20am to arrive at Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 10.50am. Please observe social distancing at all times. Captain Cornelius Murphy: 1915-1921

In the last few days we have been asked for a little more information on Captain Con Murphy, whose 100th anniversary is today, and after whom Murphy’s Terrace in Millstreet was named. For this purpose, below is a detailed article on his active years, written by his great-grandniece as a special study for her Leaving Certificate a few years ago:

 

Captain Cornelius Murphy: 1915-1921
First Volunteer of the Irish Republican Army to be executed under Martial Law for possession of firearms.

In 1921 my great-granduncle, Captain Cornelius Murphy was the first to be executed by the British Firing Squad since the executions of the 1916 Easter Rising Leaders. He was also the first volunteer of the Irish Republican Army to be executed under Martial Law for possession of firearms.

His military career began in December 1915, when Con was appointed Officer Commanding of the Rathduane Company in Ballydaly which comprised of forty men. At the time this was under Tomas MacCurtain’s Cork Brigade of Irish Volunteers, in January 1919, this Company became part of Liam Lynch’s No. 2 Brigade. After the Easter Rising, 1916, the controversy surrounding the executions of the Rising Leaders had grown in intensity, and the Royal Irish Constabulary, (backed by the British Army) raided Ireland for signs of potential threat to English security. Con and his brother Denis were arrested in the aftermath of the Rising as part of a nationwide crackdown on prominent Republicans (more than one hundred men were captured in total). The Murphys arrived at Knutsford, Chesire on June 7th 1916. All the detainees were released in August of that year as the jail was shut down.  [read more …] “Captain Cornelius Murphy: 1915-1921”

Eileen Moynihan (née Flynn), Ballydaly

The death has occurred of Eileen Moynihan (née Flynn), Ballydaly, Millstreet, Cork.

On the 26th January, in the loving care of the staff of St Joseph’s Bon Secours Care Village, Cork. Predeceased by her late husband Tim, son Tadhg and daughter in law Kathleen. Loving mother of Philip, Willie Joe, Mary, John, Eleanor, Denis, Thomas and Dan. Dear sister of Biddy and Sr Ita Marie and the late Sr Gertrude, sister Mary and brother John. Sadly missed by her sister in law Olive, daughters in law, sons in law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family and friends. May She Rest In Peace. [rip]

In accordance with current government guidelines, Eileen’s funeral Mass will take place privately at St Patrick’s Church, Millstreet, on Thursday 28th at 12 noon and burial afterwards in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Funeral Mass may be viewed at churchservices.tv/millstreet

The death has occurred of Kathleen O’Sullivan (née Looney), Gortavehy, Ballydaly, Millstreet, Cork. On January 24th 2021, peacefully in the wonderful care of Margaret and staff of Millstreet Community Hospital, predeceased by her husband Bob and sister Ciss. Sadly missed by her loving family, sons Seamus and John, daughter Genie, brother Jimmy, daughter-in-law Breeda, grandsons Robbie and Daniel, nephew, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. [rip]

In accordance with current government guidelines, Kathleen’s Requiem Mass will take place privately on Wednesday at 12 noon in St. Patrick’s Church, Millstreet, followed by burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Timothy Joe Kiely, Ballydaly

The death has occurred of Timothy Joe Kiely, Ballydaly, Millstreet, Cork. On January 8th 2021, peacefully, at Tralee University Hospital after a short illness. Loving husband of Mary, sadly missed by his sons Ray and John Paul, daughters Annette and Martina, daughters in law, sons in law, grandchildren, brother, sisters and his late bother Fintan, relatives, good neighbours and friends. In line with the current government restrictions Timothy Joe’s Funeral Mass will be private for family only on Monday at 10am in St Patrick’s Church, Millstreet and burial afterwards in St Mary’s Cemetery.
