A Day of Floods

Last night brought torrential rain to Munster, but Millstreet seems to have been one of the worst affected spots. The rain gauge at Tubrid measured 78.1mm from when the rain started at 8pm last night to when it stopped at lunch time today. After a very wet fortnight, all this excess rain had nowhere to go but into the rivers which  flooded everywhere. The river gauge at Keale Bridge  reached its maximum at about 2:30pm today, and flooding has been going down quickly since. Below are some photos of the flooding from around Millstreet.

Patrick (Pat) and Nora O’Connor, Kilcummin & Ballydaly

Patrick (Pat) and his beloved wife Nora (nee Lynch, late of Ballydaly, Millstreet, Co Cork), died 1 day apart, Patrick (Pat) on the 20th and Nora on the 21st February 2021. Much loved Dad and Mom of Dan (USA), Paudie, Noel and the late Michael. Sadly missed by their family, grandchildren Padraic Seán, Dearbhla, Megan and Adam, daughters-in-law, Nora’s sister Kit, the Dineen and O’Leary nieces and nephews, relatives, kind neighbours and their many friends. Predeceased by Patrick’s sister Rita and Nora’s sister Mary and brother Michael. “May They Rest In Peace”.

HOUSE PRIVATE PLEASE

In accordance with Government and HSE guidelines and in the interest of public health, a Private Family Funeral will take place for Pat and Nora in Our Lady Of Lourdes Church, Kilcummin. Their Requiem Mass will be live streamed on churchservices.tv/kilcummin on Tuesday morning at 11.00am, burial afterwards in Holy Cross Cemetery, Kilcummin. Pat and Nora’s funeral cortège will be leaving their family home on Tuesday morning at 10.20am to arrive at Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 10.50am. Please observe social distancing at all times. Eily’s Report – 23rd February

Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a chairde, and welcome to my weekly report.

Once again the wind is howling down the chimney, coupled with torrential rain. It has pounded our world without a break for many weeks now, and then when we got some lovely sunny hours on Saturday and Sunday can anyone blame us for getting out and making the most of them. It’s a whole month since I ventured out and had no inclination to go because of the weather as well as the lockdown but the warmth of the sun and the smell of the freshness in the air,  was a God-given invitation to get my five k’s. Lots of others got the same notion, because the world outside had come to life since the last time I was out. It was a joy to see them heading up the mountains leaving the car parked for once and stretching the legs. For obvious reasons I travelled in my car, travelled the highroads towards Mushera where I encountered large numbers of people of all ages. Some on foot others like myself driving  plus a good number of elderly folk being taken out for the day by a caring friend or family member. It was all there to be enjoyed and savoured, before the next bout of storm and rain.     A gift from God to be grateful for.
