Local Communities must organise to oppose Hospital Closures

Local Sinn Féin representative Des O Grady is calling on people across Cork North West to resist plans by the HSE to close local Community Hospitals across the constituency. Speaking after it became public that all community hospitals with less than 50 beds were earmarked for closure O Grady said, “strong rumours are circulating in the area that Millstreet, Kanturk and Macroom Community Hospitals may be shut down as all are under the 50 bed limit proposed by Minister for Health James O Reilly. The Christmas Eve leak of the HSE’s 2012 service plan with the prospect of 900 bed closures and 4,500 medical staff cuts gave notice to the elderly and the ill in society of what lay before them in the New Year. It seems that the Government and the HSE now have an unwritten policy to [read more …] “Local Communities must organise to oppose Hospital Closures”

Millstreet Hospital facing closure?

Health Minister - Dr James Reilly

Before Christmas the Corkman had us worried that Millstreet Hospital may be in danger of closing because small nursing homes were losing money all around the country:

NURSING homes in Kanturk, Macroom and Millstreet could face closure following comments by Health Minister James Reilly that such facilities with less than a 50 bed capacity are ‘difficult to maintain.’A survey of community hospitals across North and Mid-west Cork shows that the facilities in Kanturk, Macroom and Millstreet all have a capacity of less than 50 beds. This week the Irish Times reveals that Minister Reilly said that he would look at alternative means of keeping such local hospitals open:

Dr Reilly told The Irish Times that where community nursing homes were not financially viable and local people wished to retain them or take them over, he would be happy to look at how they could remain in operation.
He said different combinations of measures could be [read more …] “Millstreet Hospital facing closure?”

by

Eily Buckley

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a Cairde and welcome to the year 2012 and to news report 1096 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this calm morning following a very stormy  night .

Millstreet is waking up from a very enjoyable and safe Christmas period. Buíochas le Dia. Next Sunday night will see the return of our weekly Parish Lotto draw. It will be held at the Clara Inn on Sunday night with a Jackpot of €4,200. Tickets will go on sale during the week from the usual outlets.

Our sincere sympathy goes to Johnnie O’Keeffe on the death last week, of his dear wife Lena. Lena was a staunch member of our community. She worked tirelessly for the Tidy Towns effort, and for many years she and Johnnie were familiar figures as they combed the area picking up papers and rubbish. Thus helping our town to win many awards over the years.

May her gentle soul now rest in Peace.

Lena O’Keeffe

Her work for the Millstreet Tidy Town Committee for many years played a huge part in her life
Lena nee Kelleher to John O’ Keeffe was a good and a loving wife
Her and John often seen doing their tidy town work on the streets of Millstreet Town
On Summer evenings long ago after supper till sundown

With John out for their evening walk she will not be seen again
But a kind hearted woman of striking beauty in memory does remain
She was one of Millstreet’s finest so graceful and so tall
Mental pictures of her with those who knew her will remain to recall

The Clara News

It started as a newsletter and it’s readership was small
And when the Clara News was born to life offhand I can’t recall
Perhaps in the mid sixties but what year I do not know
The babe back then now past his prime it seems so long ago.

The Clara News has come of age and it’s now read far and wide
And it’s editor Denis Reardon on his achievement can take pride
The newsletter he helped to launch to a magazine has grown
And in every corner of the globe the Clara News is known.

Methodist Update – January 2011

Since the early days of the Methodist movement, over 250 years ago, congregations were invited to share in a Service once a year to renew their Covenant relationship with God.  A covenant is an agreement or set of promises which 2 people exchange.  It implies a commitment to each other.  So our covenant with God begins with Him in that He has given himself for us on the cross and through His resurrection we are born again into Eternal Life.  We are then called to respond by giving our lives to Him, by dying to ourself.

During our Covenant Service we shall have time to confess our sins to God, receive his forgiveness and be reminded of his promises to us.

There will be a sermon on this theme and then we will share the words of the following prayer before ending with Communion.

Sisters and brothers in Christ, let us again accept our place within this covenant which God has made with us and with all who are called to be [read more …] “Methodist Update – January 2011”

Cork County Macra Novice Debating Winners

The Cork County Novice Debating final was held recently in Ballinagree, with Millstreet Macra representing the Muskerry Macra na Feirme region and Bantry Macra representing the Carbery Region. An entertaining debate was had with Millstreet emerging as overall victors on the night. Club members Rebecca Enright and James Kelleher won the ‘Best Chairperson’ and ‘Best Speaker’ awards respectively on the night – both have won the awards twice previously in the three rounds leading up to the Final which is an impressive feat in itself. We wish the team the best of luck in the Senior Debating in the New Year. Above L-R are: Kevin Walsh (Cork County Chairperson), James Kelleher, Rebecca Enright, Steven O’ Riordan.
