Easter Ceremonies 1916 in Millstreet
Easter 2015 is just gone, but here’s a look back at the Easter Ceremonies in Millstreet 99 years ago, and how different it was:
The impressive ceremonies connected with Holy Week were carried out with the customary solemnity in St.Patrick’s Parish Church, Millstreet. On Holy Thursday High Mass was celebrated at 10 o’clock, the celebrant being the Rev M. F. Scanlan, C.C.; deacon, the Rev. J. J. O’Sullivan, C.C, and the sub-deacon, Very Rev. J. Canon Casey, P.P., V.F. After Mass the Blessed Sacratment was taken from the High Altar to the Alter of Repose. The children of the Presentation Convent Schools, tastefully dressed, and the members of the Children of Mary Society, preceded by cross-bearcer and neolytes (sp?) . inarched in processional order round the Church. The Altar of Repose, where the Sacred Heart rested in a bank of flowers, and lit up by innumerable tapers, formed a beautiful spectacle, and was visited all day by a constant stream of devoted worshippers. On Good Friday Mass of the Pre-sanctified was celebrated by the Very Rev. J. Canon Casey, P.P., V.F., and tho Blessed Sacrament was taken back to the High Altar in processional order, as on Holy Thursday. All through theo day the Church was visited by worshippers, whose demeanour was most edifying. The glorious Feast of the Resurrection was celebrated with all the joy and splendour befitting the great occasion. Fr Jim Byrne, St. Patrick’s Mission Society (1915-1981)
Fr Jim Byrne was born at the RIC Barracks in the Square, Millstreet, Co. Cork on the 2nd of February, 1915. The son of Mary (Riordan) and William Byrne, he commenced his primary education from 1920 to 1923 at the Presentation Convent, Millstreet. He then re-located to Nottingham and pursued his primary education there form 1923 to 1925. The remainder of this stage of his education was at the Patrician Brothers Tullow, from 1925 to 1929. It was there he did his secondary education from 1929 to 1934. In 1934, he entered Kiltegan and was ordained in December, 1941. Due to war time travel restrictions, it was 1943 when he reached Nigeria.
He ministered in Calabar during the years 1943 to 1945. From that year until 1947, he served as Chaplain to the Nigerian armed forces. Having completed this stint, he returned to Calabar where he was to minister until 1961. In that year ill-health forced him to return to Ireland.
From 1964 to 1970, he served in the Diocese of Clifton in England and then in Westminster from 1970 to 1979, when he returned to Kiltegan. He remained there until his sudden death on the 10th of June, 1981.

Anti Litter Challenge 2015
Millstreet Tidy Town Association would like to invite one and all to take part in the Anti Litter Competition for 2015. It is potentially worth €1750 to the Millstreet Tidy Town Association. What has that to do with me I hear you ask ?
The annual spend for the Millstreet Tidy Town Association per annum is roughly between €9000 to €10000. This prize fund would go a long way to help aid our efforts in maintaining our beautiful town.
The first adjudication will take place on the 27th of April, so that only gives us 3 weeks. Everybody can help, even just by tidying up outside our own houses and surrounding footpaths. There will be Litter Pick Ups organised in the coming weeks. 
We would really appreciate if one and all got involved.
It won’t take long if we all do a small part. Why not get together with your neighbours and organise your own Litter Pick Up in your street.
We have a beautiful town and would love to be able to showcase this. Millstreet has won first prize in this competition in previous years. It would be great if we could do it again.

Dia is mhuire diobh leir a Cairde and welcome to News Report 1260 from Millstreet. Fondest Greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this lovely Tuesday morning of Easter Week.
Following our wonderful Holy week Church ceremonies, we were blessed with a real sunshine Easter Sunday and Monday. The crowds came out to every outdoor event with great gusto. Our Country Park which celebrated its 20th birthday recently was parked with people of all ages. And there was something for every one. Season tickets at a mere €20 and the opening of the entrance from the Liscahane Road made a big difference. The Park is open every day. For enquiries ring 029 70810.
Meanwhile down at the green Glens and the mighty Drishane estate, the “Wheel of Millstreet Keeps on turning.” Equestrian events started there with the Millstreet Welcome Tour on Thursday April 2nd and will continue until Sunday April 12th. Admission is free all the way, and all are welcome. In excess of 170 horses completed the challenging cross-country coarse on Monday afternoon alone. A wonderful sight to see.
And all roads lead to the Green Glens Arena on tomorrow Wednesday night for the “Rock for Ott”concert.
Fundraiser, with the ever popular Liam OConnor, and the Fear ‘n Tighe is the one and only Michael O Muiratheataigh.

LTV2 Millstreet recorded the very special occasion with interviews with many including the truly inspiring Jamie Wall, Canon John Fitzgerald P.P., MEP Seán Kelly, Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, Roger Casey and Derry Morley (of the Organising Committee). Cullen Pipe Band playing in the glorious sunshine added greatly to the enthusiastic atmosphere and the refreshments provided were really superb. Easter Monday – Sunshine and Showjumping
Wall to wall sunshine this Bank Holiday Easter Monday for the first of the Eventing Ireland one day events – Cross Country gets underway in Drishane Castle from 1pm! Open House at Rathcoole
Just one house remains to be sold at Radharc na Coille in Rathcoole. It’s a four bedroom semi-detached (the middle house of the 5 houses in the picture above). The house needs some internal completion work.

Having just visited Station Road, Millstreet where the two-day Circus (April 1st and 2nd) was to have taken place we can now confirm that the Circus is not there either today. Hopefully we shall see the colourful scene sometime in the future. A very Happy Easter to All. (S.R.)

Golden Eagles nesting on Church Spire
The last few weeks have seen a pair of large birds appear to be nesting just under the bell on the spire of St.Patrick’s Church, Millstreet. We are delighted to reveal now that they are none other than a pair of Golden Eagles.
It’s very unusual to see them, as BirdwatchIreland.ie outlines – “Currently being re-introduced into Donegal (since 2001). Wandering birds from this project have been observed in upland areas throughout Ireland.”
Ornithologist Seán O’Connor of Birdwatch Ireland visited yesterday and was thrilled because it looks like the birds are nesting which is very rare in Ireland. The male was seen returning to the nest a few times during the day, presumably bringing food to the female who would be incubating the eggs in the nest. For now, people have been asked not to go near or disturb the nest in any way, and we’ll have to wait and see if chicks will appear in a few weeks.

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1259 from Millstreet. Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this showery. calm Tuesday morning. following a very stormy night. Its last day in March.
This is Holy Week, a very important week in our Church Calendar. Last Sunday was Palm Sunday and Palms were blessed at all Masses. The custom is to have Blessed Palm displayed in every home where it will protect all who live there from harm, in the year ahead.
Please take note of the changes in the times for the Eucharistic Adoration this week. There will be no Adoration in Cullen on Thursday April 2nd or Thursday April 9th. In Millstreet Eucharistic Adoration will be at the usual time on Tuesday 10.30 am to 10.30 pm but on Wednesday April 1st. it’s from 10.30 am to 8.30pm.
In preparation for Easter, Penitential Service will be held in Millstreet Church on Wednesday April 1st from 7.30 to 8.30pm. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for that hour and visiting priests will available for confessions. [read more …] “Regional Report 1259 – 31st March 2015”
