Cullen Feis (Feis Laitiarain) 2012

This year, the Feis is being held on Sunday 10th of June, with singing, music and recitation competitions commencing at 12.00 noon. The solo piping competitions will commence at 12 noon also. Sports for all will commence at 2pm. A seisiún of music, song and dance by local performers will commence at 3 pm. These include dancers and musicians from Boherbue, Millstreet and Cullen, local singers and the Cullen Pipe Band. Down through the years the Cullen Pipe Band has been a great friend to the Feis and is always appreciated for their wonderful contribution on the day. Coffee Morning proceeds presented to Marymount Hospice

John Kelleher presenting the sum of €600 the proceeds of the recent Coffee Morning which was held in aid of St Patrick’s Hospital Marymount Hospice & in memory of the late Phil Duggan Ballinhassig to Valarie Coogan (The Friends of Marymount Hospice Cork Fundraising Committee) at Marymount Hospice, Curraheen Road Cork today. Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1117 from Millstreet. Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this dull but calm Tuesday morning, the last one in May.
The Month of June is upon us and in the weeks to come the first of the judging for the National Tidy Towns Competition and other smaller Awards will begin. Already there are signs of great improvements, in our area, such as painting of houses, fixing of walls and fences, not least among them the re-vamping of Matt Murphy’s wall, in Minor Row where he so laboriously painted the flags of all the Countries that took part in the EuroVision Song Contest when it came to Millstreet in 1993. People are asked to please keep up the Good work, give all the help you can to our vibrant committee in their quest to turn last year bronze medal into silver this time round. Methodist Update

A number of residents from Drishane Castle join us for our weekly meetings and on the afternoon of Sunday 8th July we are looking forward to going to Drishane to organize Bible based adult and children’s programmes. The children’s programme will include lots of games, crafts and other fun. Then after sharing a BBQ together we plan to have our regular service on that particular Sunday in the main hall at Drishane Castle instead of at our usual venue. We will be joined by a team of visitors from California and this should be a really inspiring service including lots of good music. Again we would warmly invite anyone from the local community to join us at 7pm in the main hall of Drishane Castle on Sunday 8th July. Dermy Leary

The wanderlust was in him for places far away
And he left Millstreet Town as a young man for to live in the U S of A
The likeable Dermy Leary in life he made many a friend
Far from his beloved Hometown and Millstreet’s old West End.

He always seemed so cheerful with great warmth in his hello
The dapper Dermy Leary a nice person to know
‘Tis so sad to think in Millstreet he will not be seen again
But with those who knew him from the past the good memories will remain

Elizabeth Hunter (nee Duggan) late of West End and Killarney Rd

I would like to inform people in Millstreet who might remember the Duggan family that Elizabeth sadly passed away in Oxford, England last week. The family lived for many years it the West End (Maurice Linehan’s solicitors office), and then moved to Killarney Rd.
Her parents were Finbar and Dolly. Finbar was the area engineer for almost 30 years. They both died in late 1980. After their deaths the family moved away. Elizabeth became head of the Science Dept in a large Comprehensive school in High Wycombe, England, and married her husband Barry Hunter, who also taught in the same school, while living there.
She is survived by Barry, her sisters Rosario, and Frances, and her brother Brian. May she rest in peace.

Bina and Liam honoured by the RNLI

The annual RNLI Ireland awards took place over the weekend at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham in Dublin, with volunteers and supporters being recognised for their role in raising funds and awareness for the charity that saves lives at sea.  Guest of honour was RTE’s Bryan Dobson, who spoke of his admiration for the RNLI and handed out awards to forty-five volunteers. Joanne to have surgery

“AN IRISH teen born without limbs who earned worldwide plaudits for an inspirational United Nations address is to undergo major surgery.
Joanne O’Riordan (16) from Millstreet, was chosen by the UN to be just one of seven speakers to address a special forum on technology in New York last month.
The Transition Year student delivered a remarkable address — and became an Internet sensation with thousands of people blogging about how her remarkable courage in the face of adversity had proved inspirational.
Joanne’s address was focused on how technology had helped transform her life.
She was born with a condition known as Amelia — leaving her without properly formed arms and legs.
As a further complication, Joanne was also born with scoliosis or curvature of the spine.
She was scheduled to undergo major surgery last month as part of her scoliosis treatment — but the operation was postponed to allow her travel to the UN in New York. Joanne will now have the surgery next month — but will still be able to attend a special upcoming edition of ‘The Late Late Show’ to mark the 50th anniversary of the RTE programme” [read the full article on the Independent]

Kilcorney Community Feis Takes Place Today – Established 1910

What a truly wonderful tradition has been maintained since the establishment in 1910 of Kilcorney Feis by Liam Ó Buachalla and his dedicated Committee and afterwards continued by his son, Seán and Seán's Family and now by a more recent also very active and enthusiastic Committee. A Most Enjoyable 25 Year Class Reunion at Wallis Arms Hotel on Friday

Four Generations at Eurovision Wall in Minor Row, Millstreet on 24th May 2012 Recalling Millstreet’s Historic 1993 Eurovision Song Contest

How very appropriate during this 2012 Eurovision Week we recall the 1993 Eurovision in Millstreet before which Matthew Murphy creatively painted on his front wall at Minor Row truly superb flags of all 25 countries participating in the Song Contest in 1993. Here we meet this very evening (24th May) four generations of the Murphy Family standing in front of the now renowned wall which has been magnificently further upgraded by Millstreet Tidy Towns Tourism Association. Book: Fly Traps & Other Inventions

Fly Flaps & Other Inventions, (ISBN 978-1477488195) is a self published book by Bill O’Riordan that includes descriptions and explanations for some 200 ideas, concepts and patentable inventions he has had over the years, and he believes that some of them could be viable opportunities for anyone who reads the book. None of the ideas have any patent protection, and he’s publishing them now because he believes someone will be inspired by them and use them.

He is giving them away in the hope that someone, somewhere might be able to take them further than he can, and bring one or two of them to market. Ultimately it’s hoped that some of the ideas in the book could boost employment rates in Ireland or indeed anywhere in the world.

The book Fly Flaps & Other Inventions is loosely based on notes he’s made over the years as the ideas occurred to him.  The reason he’s publishing them now is simply to bring them out from his “shed” and set them free; “to see what happens.” He says.
