On our return journey from the All-Ireland Tidy Towns Awards event at the magnificent Helix Theatre in Dublin today we happened to meet in the afternoon at the Avoca Store & Cafés near the Naas Road in Rathcoole, Co. Dublin, Sonia O’Sullivan (world-famous athlete and sports ambassador supreme originally from Cobh) who was delighted to hear of the success of Cobh and Millstreet at the prestigious annual awards. My role was to record the wonderfully uplifting event at which Millstreet received a further Bronze medal, gained one extra mark which is now at 296 (20 marks behind Moynalty, Co. Meath which is Ireland’s Tidiest Town 2013). We also got to meet with members of Killarney T.T.A. (Winner) and we note that we are first in our category in Cork (North).

The SuperValu Tidy Towns results for 2013 have just been announced. Millstreet have gained another point this year to reach 296 points in total. Summary of Millstreet results are:

A Trad for Trócaire event will take place in Millstreet Community School library on Thursday 3rd October at 8pm. It will be an evening of traditional song, music and dance, performed by members of the community school. It will also be a chance to support Trócaire’s work with the poorest of the poor in developing countries. Admission is free, although there will be a collection for Trocaire during the event. There were interviews were with former owner Jerry Sheehan, Manger Donie Howard, Chef Eleanor Leahy, and new owner Derry Sheehan. Brendan Fitzgerald from Cullen was back from Canada in August with his wife Maureen, son Sean, wife Sharon, Grandchildren Luke and Jack, to visit his brothers and their families. Celebrated the year of the Gathering at the original home of the Fitzgerald Family with most of the Fitzgeralds. What an amazing year to visit Ireland —- glorious weather and the most wonderful scenery in the world! It was the trip of a lifetime.

During the special Mass celebrated by Canon John Fitzgerald, P.P. in St. Patrick’s Church this evening four deceased members of the original class of 1983 -1988 were remembered. Following the group photograph the many Friends proceeded to the Wallis Arms Hotel to meet with further members of the Reunion Group. Lots of great memories were recalled in advance of the meal and dance. We extend our best wishes to the Class of 1983-1988 who were joined by a number of Teachers to celebrate the special occasion. A Tubrid presentation to Edward Loughman from New Zealand who is such a superb Ambassador for his country. Edward’s identical twin brother, Tommy, is a dedicated fan of Cork Music Station and the Millstreet website as is also Edward. This special reception took place in Cullen on Thursday night. We are delighted to announce that Millstreet has topped our category in the Cork Anti-Litter Campaign 2013. This is a great achievement and we thank all our members, volunteers and Fas Community Employment workers for all their hard work during the past few months.
National Tidy Towns Results will be announced next Monday and we hope we do just as well in this competition.
Derry Sheehan of Millstreet Tidy Towns Association just communicated the wonderfully uplifting news that Millstreet has just come first in its category in the Co. Cork Anti-litter Awards. Sincere congratulations to the many very dedicated people who have helped to achieve such a prestigious Award. And who knows perhaps that in Monday’s All-Ireland Tidy Towns Awards in Dublin Millstreet might receive further uplifting news…let’s hope that whatever happens there it will provide inspiring encouragement.
