Millstreet Celtic 5 Rylane Celtic 4

We beat Rylane 5 – 4 at home in the 1st round of the County Cup. Despite the tough conditions, both teams played well in patches and either team could have won it. Rylane took the lead after 25 mins but we struck back immediately. Barry Lawlor surged through the centre of the Rylane defense and, when his shot came back off the post, Chris Cleary was on hand to finish it off. Rylane regained the lead and went 3-1 ahead on 40 mins but we pulled one back shortly before half time when Lawlor released Tadhg Collins who slipped it past the keeper. We pulled level after 55 mins in bizarre fashion. Keeper John Lehane kicked the ball long off his hands, it bounced just inside the box and over the head of the stranded keeper. Rylane again took the lead in the 65th min but again we pulled level shortly after. Excellent work from Brian Murphy on the wing led to him squaring for Paul Dawson to tap home from a couple of yards out. The game looked to be heading for extra time until [read more …] “Millstreet Celtic 5 Rylane Celtic 4”

The Boeing’s New Year’s Oldest Swimmer

At the Boeing new year swim he is always first in
Mick Collins the fellow with anti freeze skin
For one in his late fifties or early sixties not much younger than me
He is quite a tough nut would you not agree

Age is a relative thing the brave Mick does not feel old
Like the Arctic bear he must be immune to cold
One can say in him there is much to admire
To greater things far younger than him he inspire

Regional Report 1097 – 10th January 2012

by

Eily Buckley

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1097 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this beautiful calm Tuesday morning.

Well the Loveliest Night of the Year lived up to its name again this year. The Women’s Christmas was celebrated in style by over 200 ladies of all ages at the wonderful Wallis Arms Hotel on Friday night last January6.  Every “Girl” in the family from Grannies to granddaughters were all dressed up in their finest bling  for the night that was in it.

It was great to see old friends meeting up and recalling their young days when life was simpler and the Celtic hadn’t yet come to spoil it all.

But there was no talk of bad times that night it was all fun and more fun. The beautiful meal, the rousing music of the Kelt, you couldn’t ask for more.

A collection box was passed round the Hall on the night, in aid of Cancer research and a massive €1,545.20 was raised.

Again many thanks to Mairead Daly who, in spite of her illness, saw to every detail of the great event. Thanks also to her helpers, especially Breda Cremin.

The Spirit Of Los Zarcos

The name of Los Zarcos given to them by Brian Sullivan of Millstreet Town’s Mal Paso Pub
Back in the very early eighties they were formed as a Football Club
Some of the players who played for Zarcos then the grandfathers of today
And some deceased and some from Millstreet living far away.

Some of their sons in the colours of Los Zarcos nowadays line out to play
They win some games and lose some games that’s life as some might say
In The Mal Paso Pub they drink to celebrate a win or ease the pain of a loss as their dads did in days gone by
On looking back the decades how time does seem to fly.

Blackwater Swim 2012 – Wonderfully Successful

The superbly energetic and splendidly courageous participants pictured this noontime today, 8th January (birthday of Elvis...and of quite a few local people!) at the Boeing following their Swim in the River Blackwater on behalf of the Cork North West Branch of MS.

Having had to be deferred from last Sunday due to significantly high water level at the River Blackwater the now annual Swim at the Boeing took place at 12.30 p.m. .    And what a tremendously cheerful and spirited occasion it was covered by John Tarrant for the Press and by William, Ita and Brendan for LTV2 Millstreet (likely to be transmitted this week on LTV2).   The Organisers must certainly take a bow not only for the overall coordination of the event but for [read more …] “Blackwater Swim 2012 – Wonderfully Successful”
