Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind Fundraising This Friday

On this Friday, 24th May 2024, Eileen Tarrant and her dedicated Team will be fundraising from 9am to 4pm outside Coleman’s Centra Supermarket, Minor Row, Millstreet in aid of the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.  Eileen will be having many relevant items for sale and will be joined by two canine friends.  She especially welcomes anyone who would like to join her at any time during the 9 to 4 fundraising period for this wonderfully praiseworthy occasion.

This was the occasion in August 2023 when the official cheque was presented following the uplifting fundraising efforts of the dedicated local group:

“With the Annual Open Day taking place today, Saturday, 26th August 2023 at the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind national headquarters on Model Farm Road, Cork T12 WT4A to which all are very welcome, a very special gathering of people from the Millstreet Parish area travelled there yesterday to present the very impressive cheque of €2,018.00 to the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind – the fruits of the fundraising some months ago which involved the production and selling of the excellent Music CD “A Millstreet Collection Volume Two” – comprising of thirty various Artists most of whom had direct Millstreet links.  This CD fundraising project was the inspiring work of Paddy Murphy, Tullig.   The second important fundraising event, wonderfully coordinated by Eileen Tarrant and her superbly dedicated Team involved a full day’s fundraising Collection outside Coleman’s Centra, Minor Row, Millstreet where a royal welcome was accorded by Mary and John Coleman during which the generous response from the public was quite remarkable.   Here we share an image of the presentation with further images to follow later.  Tap on the picture to enlarge.  (S.R.)

Chris Bennett, Regional Development Officer, Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind, (on extreme right) accepted the uplifting cheque from the wonderfully dedicated Team from Millstreet Parish. The gentleman with the green jacket at back is Dermot O’Donovan who provided us with a magnificent Tour of the overall Centre. Dermot from the Coachford area is one of a number of excellent Volunteer Helpers at the amazing Centre.

Eily’s Report – 21st May

Dia is Mhuire dióbh go léir a cairde and welcome to my Report.

There may be warnings of terrible thunder and thunder rains, but nothing can beat the early morning warm foggy world with the sun coming through. The dew on the grass and on the branches creating a wonderland of jewels all glistening in the slanting sun. A visiting cat re-enacting the wild desires of the beasts of the forest, crouching down ,even on the wet grass, in the hope of ambushing an unsuspecting little bird. Who was busy himself gathering stuff to make a nest. While other people  have to rush around catching up with their work-packed days, it’s nice for me and my likes, to have the time to follow the day at a speed reduced rate. I’m not sure if the idea of not cutting the lawn in May is such a good idea. It means that a lot of the new growths don’t come, leaving the birds without them. We all know only too well that when we cut the lawn, the first thing up in it’s wake is the dandolion. The favourite food of the small birds. But when they are not cut down the old stem stands withering there, with nothing to replace it. Nothing that is until the growth of mown again welcomes the next plants to spring up and sports its woolly head full of seeds to the sheer joy of our little feathered friends.

Millstreet Library – Bealtaine Arts & Crafts Workshop

For Bealtaine, Millstreet Library hosted an Arts & Crafts workshop. The library buzzed with creativity and camaraderie.  The arts & crafts workshop was led by the talented artist Amanda Wright who focused on the intricate art of macrame.  The ladies who participated immersed themselves in the project, creating beautiful and unique creations. Under Amanda’s expert guidance, attendees not only learned the delicate techniques of this age-old craft but also enjoyed a fulfilling and joyous experience.  The workshop was a testament to the community spirit of Bealtaine, bringing people together to celebrate creativity and craftsmanship.

HUGE thanks to everyone that donated to the fundraiser – Ireland’s Fittest Family Superstars

Danny & Gillian O’Riordan & their teammates Brendan & Mark would like to say a HUGE thanks to everyone that donated to their fundraiser – Ireland’s Fittest Family Superstars that took place last weekend in the Meath Eco Park.
The course was gruelling & the heat of the day didn’t help but the Ardfallen team finished in a very respectful 11th place!
They raised the most money from all teams competing & this was mentioned many times throughout the day so again a huge thanks to everyone that donated – it’s all going to an amazing cause – The Irish Hospice Foundation in honour of Danny & Gillian’s aunt Noreen who passed away in July 2022.
Donations are being accepted until June 11th for anyone that would still like to contribute & help get them over the €3,000 mark!

Land War to Civil War 1900-1924:

Donoughmore to Cork and Beyond

By Gerard O’ Rourke

Friday 24th May at 8 p.m.

Community Centre, Stuake, Donoughmore (Eircode P32 FP49)

Everyone Welcome to a night of reminiscence, music, and conversation.

Book will be available in local and surrounding outlets and online at www.donoughmore.ie

For every copy sold €15 will be donated to Cancer Care Services in Cork.

This new publication paints a compelling picture of Ireland during the period 1900-1924 in the context of the parish of Donoughmore, Co Cork. It explores, examines, and explains how in a remarkable display of perseverance a road to self-government was achieved. Building on the well-received Ancient Sweet Donoughmore: Life in an Irish Rural Parish to 1900 (2015) it broadens its scope, encompassing events in Cork City, Manchester and beyond giving a more expanded study of the period.

Land War to Civil War: Donoughmore to Cork and Beyond chronicles this development of a new invigorated nationalism which saw a reawakening of social, cultural, and political aspects of national identity. The visits of renowned Irish politicians Michael Davitt and William O’Brien to Donoughmore facilitated that resurgence. The area became one of the centres of attention along the road to independence in Cork and incidents such as the executions of Mrs. Lindsay and Geoffrey Compton- Smith propelled it to the forefront of international news.

The heroism displayed by ordinary men and women in putting their lives in danger in an era of intense vigilance and intimidation is captured in an incisive manner. This is aptly portrayed in the story of the Wallace sisters in Cork and by the previously unrecognised work of Mary Healy in Manchester.

Civil war brought out the worst in human nature and hunger strikes, executions and emigration created intense rancour and left a residual memory difficult to eradicate. On a lighter note, readers will be enthralled to hear of stories such as the IRA soldier who became a monk, the story of the ‘Moon Car’ which threatened to upsurge the treaty between Ireland and Britain and the ‘Titanic’ connection with Donoughmore.

The 1982 Munster Regional Trout Angling Championships

The above is a video for the 1982 Munster Regional Trout Angling Championships.  It was my late father Jerry Sheehan of Liscahane who organised the staging of the event which was normally held on the river Suir.

There are many anglers in this video from Millstreet some of whom are long deceased  and were indeed some of the best anglers in the country back then.

The competition was won on the day by local man Pat O’Sullivan of Bolomore,  Rathcoole.

It certainly brings many memories back to me and I am quite sure that it would do likewise for family and friends of the people seen on the video.

Thank you to Jack Sheehan for submitting this to Millstreet.ie

Eily’s Report – 14th May

Dia is Mhuire dióbh go léir a cairde and welcome to my Report.

Fondest greetings everyone and I hope you’re allenjoying the beautiful weather. There was a host of fixtures planned for the entire weekend, from Darkness into Light, First Holy Communions, Vintage Run, Dancing at the Wallis for our ARA and their friends from other Clubs,  to name but a few. Plus the lovely weather for others to make plans of their own.  During the previous week our farmers were busy gathering in the silage, following all the weeks and months of rain and others getting their turf cut, all making sure that the coming winter will  be good for both man  beast.  I trust that all who had a good and successful time will give thanks to the Good Lord for his wonderful gift of fine weather that made it all possible.
