U14 footballers capture county féile title

Magnificent Millstreet were crowned Cork U14 B Feile Football champions after edging Killeagh/Itas in a titanic struggle in Mayfield last Sunday evening.
Millstreet supporters in the large attendance enthusiastically voiced their appreciation as Millstreet took the spoils on a narrow 3-5 to 2-7 triumph. From a marvellous encounter adorned by brilliant passages in play, Millstreet weathered a late Killeagh offensive to land the spoils.
Millstreet tore into the fray from the first whistle and seized the initiative from a well worked goal netted by Kevin Sheehan. Killeagh attempted to find their feet yet poor shooting limited their progress.
Wind assisted Millstreet were sharper and drove home their dominance on a goal netted by substitute Thomas Sheehan for Millstreet to enjoy a 2-4 to 0-3 grip at the interval. Though Killeagh attempted to pick up their game, Millstreet held their own and maintained a two goal grip at the three quarter stage.
Killeagh proved themselves battlers and a goal threw the issue wide open. Back came Millstreet and a defence splitting move saw Kevin Sheehan blast home a terrific goal.
Victory appeared to be safely in Millstreet’s hands but Killeagh weren’t done yet and a second goal rose their spirits. In the concluding minutes, Killeagh tried desperately to rescue the situation and two additional points left the minimum between the sides.
Time ran out and Millstreet stood firm to enjoy a narrow but deserved win, team captain Kevin Crowley accepting the trophy from County Juvenile GAA Chairman Tony O’Mahony. The successful Millstreet panel included Kevin Crowley, Eoin O Callaghan, Eoghan Daly, Alan Murphy, Robert Kelleher, Paul Sheehan, Donal Linehan, Diarmuid Fraser, Len Murphy, Kevin Sheehan, Beircheart O’Connor, Mark O’Donovan, Daniel O’Brien, Frank Dineen, Cian Dennehy, Rory O’Connor, Liam Cronin, Tadgh O’Callaghan, Stephen Crowley, Shane Dineen, Darragh Murphy, Donough Murphy, Donal O’Connor, Andrew Roche, Kevin Linehan and Padraig McCarthy.
On their return to Millstreet, the victorious panel were paraded through the town led by Millstreet Pipe Band.

HB Ice Cream Sunday:

Aubane hosted its third HB Ice Cream Sunday on Sunday the 25th May, in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland. It proved to be a huge success with a considerable amount €2,000 rose on the day for Down Sydrome Ireland. The main organisers of this event were Kathleen & Jerry Kelleher Chairman of the Aubane Social Clutb. The afternoon commenced at 2pm and finished at 4pm at the Aubane Community Centre. It was great to see such a large attendance on a beautiful summers day. A special word of thanks to John O’Sullivan Tullig of Duhallow Bouncing Castle who provided a bouncing castle inside free of charge. Of course there was more than enough ice cream to go around too. Thanks to all for supporting this worthy cause. Well Done to Kathleen & Jerry.

St John’s Well Mass

The Annual Mass will be celebrated at St John’s Well on Tueday 24th June at 8.30 pm. This year it is the 50th year since the first mass was celebrated at the well. All are welcome.

Cork City Marathon

Congratulations to all the local people who participated in this year’s Cork City Marathon on Monday 2nd June. Well Done.

Stops Sign and Road Markings:

I would like inform the public and the people living in the Aubane Community that Stops Signs and Road Markings have been put in place at Cross Roads at the Kerryman’s Table. These signs were put in place due to the poor vision from the Millstreet Side and failure of people to STOP at the both junctions when either coming from Kilcorney or Ballinagree. As signs are now erected at the Junction a life will be saved as numerous bad accidents have occurred in the past few years. I now ask road users to obey the Road Markings and stop signs as they are put in place for a reason. I would like to thank Councilor Noel Buckley and Michael Moynihan TD for their assistance in helping me as Secretary of the Aubane Social Club to put them in place. Thank you also to the staff at the Cork County Council Office in Millstreet for their quick response action in putting these Signs and Road Markings in place.

Set Dancing:

The weekly set dancing at the Aubane Community Centre concluded on the 12th May which was the last night. On the night there were nine sets on the floor dancing to the great music of the popular Abbey Ceili Band. The dancing will recommence again on Monday the 29th September. All the best Polka sets and Hornpipes are promised in the lively sessions. The dancing on the floor commences at 9.15 pm. A special thanks to you all who came to the dancing during the season and I hope ye enjoyed yourselves. We hope to see you all again on the 29th September.

Fr James Mc Sweeney is the New Chaplain of Cholaiste Choilm

Congratulations and best wishes for the Future to Fr James Mc Swenney in his new parish Ballincollig where he is the new Full Time Chaplain of Colasite Choilm Secondary School. This is a great school, which has over One Thousand students attending. When I recently spoke with Fr James the day after he received the good news, he said it’s a challenge that im well ready for and as well it is a new beginning with many possibilities to look forward to. The real bonus Fr James though is that Ballincollig is so near to his homeland Toorenbawn as it is only over the hill. Best of Luck in your new Parish Fr James where I’m sure you will made very welcome by the students and staff of Colaiste Choilm and by the people living in Ballincollig.

Annual General Meeting:

The Annual General Meeting of the Aubane Social Club was held in the Aubane Community Centre on the 27th March. Gerard Mc Sweeney Chairman thanked the members for the their commitment to the Club during the past year. I John Kelleher (PRO) gave a summary of the different events and happenings that took place during the year and I now look forward to yet another busy year ahead. The Aubane Homepage has also been an tremendous success since it was set up four years ago as the different events that are staged at the Community Centre can be viewed by people Worldwide. This summary will be on the Aubane Homepage shortly for the publics viewing. The present Treasurer spoke very highly about the different events that were organised by the club during the past year. The Social Club now its 33nd year in existence and over the years has celebrated many events such as the Tops of the Town, Butter Road Commeration in May 1998 and their 30th Anniversary Social in November 2005 .

Easter Table Quiz:

The biggest crowd ever of 27 Tables participated this year in our Good Friday Night Table Quiz with the dancing room full to the brim. The questions were set by quiz-masters Don and Michael O’Riordan. There were questions for everyone from children’s cartoons to old films, from history to local news, music and picture rounds and of course general knowledge. HB Ice Cream Sunday In Aid of Down Syndrome Ireland:

Aubane will host its third HB Ice Cream Sunday on Sunday the 25th May, in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland. It proved to be a huge success last year with a considerable amount raised on the day that was donated to Down Syndrome Irealand. The main organisers of this event are Kathleen & Jerry Kelleher. The afternoon will commence at 2pm and finish at 4pm at the Aubane Community Centre. An excellent afternoon of entertainment is promised for young and old. Please give it your best support.

Winning Streak:

Congratulations to Noreen Cashman Youghal and originally from Tullig who appeared on the National Lottery Winning Streak game show on Saturday the 2nd March. It was great to see a local woman win a tremendous amount of money. Well Done Noreen!!

Diamond Sisters Launches New CD:

Congratulations to the Diamond Sisters Breeda & Marie Moynihan Lackdota on the recent launch of their second fifteen track CD which was held at Darby O’Gill’s on Friday 28th March. Singing on this excellent CD also is their brother Donal and father Peter Moynihan. The CD entitled Love Can Build a Bridge is now for sale from the Diamond Sisters Management and from the usual outlets at €15. I believe the launch was excellent success and on behalf of Aubane Social Club I would wish the Diamond Sisters the very Best of Luck for the future.

Fr James Person of the Month Award:

Congratulations to Fr James Mc Sweeney who was awarded The Cork Person of the Month in March. Fr. James McSweeney was based in St.Oliver’s Church, Ballyvolane and had been working in the Ballyvolane/Dublin Hill area since 2001. Prior to that Fr. James was in Ballinlough parish for six years. Fr. James has brought a youthful approach to all we believe in. James has a simple down to earth faith that is rooted in his love of nature and the countryside. He has always believed in nurturing, sharing and promoting good news. This is the heart of the gospel message and is at the heart of his work as a priest. He believes strongly in teamwork and nurturing peoples many different talents particularly young people. James works quietly away but with great energy and determination. Such energy and enthusiasm can only come from a man who is close to God and someone who believes in the great goodness, love and potential of each person in his community. He is a man who never leaves the camera out of sight and always has it to hand to capture that perfect moment. His charity work and his devotion to the parishioners has seen him organize numerous of themed masses and raise thousands of euro for worthy causes through his yearly Calendar and live animal crib at Christmas time. This year Fr James launched his first book entitled A year in Reflections which was an outstanding success and is now a collectors item. Recently Fr James´ work saw the Mercy University Hospital Foundation receive more than €40,000 through his photographic calendar and live animal crib. On Easter Sunday at St Oliver’s Church it was packed to capacity as parishioners said farewell to their popular Parish Priest. Fr James said “The past seven years have been truly special, it has been an absolute honour and privelage working as a priest in this area”. During the mass the teachers and students of Scoil Olibhear preformed a specially commissioned piece “The Mushera Reel” by Richard Daly. I would like to wish Fr James on behalf of the Aubane Social Club the very best of Luck for the Future in his new parish in June. Millstreet Country Park:

It was a delight to read the Examiner on Saturday 5th April and see our own Millstreet Country Park being praised highly by the well know Journalist Mary Leland. Mary is truly right is saying that Millstreet Country Park has Natures bounty in all its glory. In this article it was great to see words the Aubane River, Mushera Mor and the Butter Road being used as it shows that Aubane area has tourism potential by having such a beautiful Country Park near by. So this summer why not pay a visit to this beautiful local hidden gem that is Millstreet Country Park.

Death Notice: Ted Kelleher, Massachusetts and Millstreet

Timothy (“Ted”) Patrick Kelleher, of Norwood, Massachusetts, USA, passed away at his home on May 5, 2008, surrounded by his loving wife and children. Born on St. Patrick’s Day in 1932 in Millstreet, County Cork, Ireland, Ted moved to New York City in 1959, where he later met and married his wife Kathleen (Lafferty). He continued to retain his strong relationship with his native Ireland, retaining his family home in Millstreet. Ted was a former member of the Gaelic Athletic Association and Cork Football Club and was a longtime executive at White Rock Products, Inc. until his retirement in 1990. Ted will be missed for his keen intellect, his kindness and incredible sense of humor. Ted was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Kathleen; his son, John Kelleher and his wife, Christine, of Nevada; his daughter, Megan Kelleher and her husband, David Abramowitz, of Westwood; his daughter Alanna Kelleher and husband, Dan Mitchell, of Quincy; his son, Gavin Kelleher and his wife, Jennifer, of Sharon; his son, Craig Kelleher and his wife, Maria, of Walpole, and his beloved grandchildren, Timothy, Ryan, Aidan, Hugo and Ava. Visting hours are Wednesday, May 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Gillooly Funeral Home, 126 Walpole St., Norwood. A funeral Mass in St. Catherine of Siena Church, 547 Washington St., Norwood, will be on Thursday, May 8, at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Highland Cemetery in Norwood. Millstreet claim u16 hurling title

Millstreet enjoyed a merited 1-11 to 0-4 triumph over Croke Rovers to capture the Duhallow U16B Hurling Championship title in Millstreet.
In fairness, both sides made a concerted effort in the glue like underfoot conditions to serve up a competitive hour’s hurling in the deplorable weather.
However, once Millstreet asserted their authority midway through the second half, there was never a doubt about the outcome and it allowed Millstreet take the inaugural Dave Hallahan Memorial Cup.
At times, both sides performed best against the elements, evident from Millstreet dictating much of the opening half and highlighted on points from David McCaul and Barry O’Reilly.
Rovers attempted to retrieve the situation but it failed to halt Millstreet from gaining a 0-5 to 0-2 interval advantage.
Matters looked ominous for Rovers upon the resumption as Millstreet restarted with the strong elements behind their backs. However as a sleet shower descended on the proceedings, Crokes rose to the challenge.
And their hopes were raised on a pair of points that cut the deficit to the minimum. Millstreet had the facility to raise the momentum and the game turned in the 42nd min on a delivery by the outstanding Michael Vaughan from outfield deceived the Rovers cover to find the net.
That score helped Millstreet take control, boosted by the industrious efforts of Darren Sheehan, Barry O’Reilly, McCaul and Vaughan. And Millstreet finished at a gallop, both Vaughan and McCaul confirming their accuracy to shoot three points apiece that put the icing on the cake.

Minor football team land league title

Millstreet gathered a deserved 4-10 to 2-6 victory over Knocknagree in the Duhallow Minor B Football League Final played in Knocknagree.
Despite the lateness of the season, both sides requested the game go ahead. And all credit to the pair who battled through a biting cold wind to serve up an appealing encounter for the enthusiastic attendance present.
At the end of the hour, the sharper and better balanced Millstreet landed the spoils to gather compensation for a county final defeat to Donoughmore a few days previously.
Early on, Knocknagree appeared the more hungrier side and confirmed on shooting a run of points.
Both teams proceeded to miss a plethora of chances before Millstreet’s game got up and running to snatch the initiative thanks to a goal from David McCaul. Knocknagree answered positively and regained the lead temporally thanks on a goal netted.
Matters improved considerably for Millstreet, boosted by the influencial play generated by Darren Sheehan, Darren Murphy, McCaul and Mark Ellis. And Knocknagree were rocked on the concession of two quick fire goals from John Buckley that helped Millstreet to a 3-4 to 1-4 interval advantage.
Knocknagree threw down the gauntlet for the restart and their hopes brightened on a goal. But that was as close as Knocknagree got for Millstreet held key personal in the key departments to sway the outcome.
And Millstreet finished strongly, a run of points was completed by a neatly taken goal from Mark Ellis that effectively wrapped up matters.

At the 16th annual Waterford Crystal-sponsored Iarnród Éireann Best Station Awards (2008) [1], held in Croke Park recently, Millstreet Train Station has been awarded second place in the Intercity Halts Category.

It is a credit to those that work there that it is so well kept.

Mallow won the Best Major Station, Kent Station (Cork) received a conservation award, and Fota won the most improved unmanned station, while the best overall station went to Greystones (Wicklow). [read more …] “Train Station Award”

Batt O’Keeffe TD in Aubane for Presention

The Aubane Historical Society (AHS) organised a local launch of its latest publication and presented a copy to Minister of State, Batt O’Keeffe TD on Saturday 12th May 2007. It is called “Fianna Fail and the decline of the Free State” by Brendan Clifford and is dedicated to Jack Roche

The Lane family Aubane donated a beautiful pine seat to the Aubane Social Club & St John’s Well Committee at St John’s Well in memory of their late parents Hannie & Jackie Lane Aubane. The Aubane Social Club in June hsted a very special mass for the late Hannie Lane who passed away in May 2007 and she also left the Aubane Social Club a generous sum of money in our will. May she rest in Peace. Hannie was a member of the Social Club for many years
Annual Mass at St John’s Well:

The Annual St John’s Well mass was celebrated on the 25 June 2007 as this year it was the 25th Anniversary of the erecting of the Stations of the Cross. . It was celebrated by Bishop Bill Murphy Bishop of Kerry, and assisted by Fr Declan O’Connor CC St Mary’s Cathedral Killarney. A large crowd attended the mass this year despite it being a rather cold overcast evening. During the mass Fr Declan O’Connor recited the well-known poem St John’s that was written by one of the founder members of the St John’s Well Committee

After the mass a reception was held in the Aubane Community Centre where people were treated to refreshments and entertainment. The Aubane Social Club and St John’s Well Committee also made two presentations to the Fr Bill Murphy Bishop Kerry for celebrating the mass. John W. Kelleher presented him with an engrave Slate Clock and Brendan Kelleher presented a framed photograph of St John’s Well. Fr Bill Murphy said that it was his first time to Aubane and was very impressed by its scenic beauty; he also said that the next time he would be travelling to Cork he would take the Butter Road Route. The celebrations went on till the early hours of the morning.

Aubane Social Club amongst other local people enjoyed a day trip around the Beara Peninsula and stopped off for an enjoyable night of entertainment the Lansdowne Arms in Kenmare.

Annual Fancy Dress:

The Annual fancy dress took place on Friday (26th October) in the Wallis Arms Hotel. The annual event raises money for charity each year. This year the money raised went to the Cullen & District Special Needs Association & The Aubane Social Club. There was a fantastic turnout again this year with a very impressive display of costumes.. During the past 7 years Jerry Kelleher and Tony Twomey have raised an incredible amount of over €25,000 for different charities. On Friday 9th November Jerry and Tony presented the two cheques to representatives of both the Aubane Social Club and the Cullen & District Special Needs Association. On the night also a beautiful hand painted slate clock was presented to Tony Twomey for the great the work he did in organising the event for the past 7 years. Jerry Kelleher and Tony Twomey both said on the night that they would not be organising the event anymore and that it was there last, but the good news is that the members of the Aubane Social Club will now continue role in organising the Annual Fancy Dress for next year and the years to come. Like every other year the money will be donated to different charities. On behalf of the Aubane Social Club I would like to wish Tony and Jerry every success for the future and thank you both for such a generous contribution, which will be put towards the Aubane Community Centre Roof Fund.

On Friday the 7th December Fr Sean Tucker gave an interesting lecture on History of Drishane Estate. The lecture was officially opened by the President of Aubane Historical Society Jack Lane. The lecture was very well attended.

In November a number of people from the Aubane Area and from the Social Club participated in Defibrillator and Occupational First Aid Training which took place over three Saturday’s. This was very intensive training.

The Annual Mass and Senior Citizens’ party took place on Thursday 13th December in the Aubane Community Centre recently and was well attended by the local people. The Celebrants at the Mass were Monsignor Michael Manning and Fr James Mc Sweeney helped by a group from the Millstreet Church Choir. Following the mass, the party was held and patrons were entertained by a group from Ceomhaltas Ceoltoirí Eireann who played music and sang, and were joined by people from the crowd who gave renditions of their own songs.

Santa Claus Visited Aubane:
On Sunday 9th December Santa Claus visited all the boys and girls at the Aubane Community Centre.

The Social Club enjoyed their Christmas Party at Killarney Heights.

Fr James Relaunches New Book in his homeland:

Aubane’s own Fr James Mc Sweeney launched his new book titled “A year in Reflections in Aubane Community Centre in the presence of a large attendance on Tuesday 18 December. “ A year in Reflections features a thought for each day of the year with a focus written by Fr James. Accompanying the text is a photograph for each day of the year. Mr Sean Radley launched the book and described publication as very special and a treasure. The book is dedicated to his parents Con & Nora Mc Sweeney. Supporting the publication were The Evening Echo newspaper and present at the launch were Dan Linehan CEO, and Diarmuid O’Donovan Circulation Manager. The book has now gone nationwide and remains on sale at bookshops and usual outlets.

Around The Fireside
On December 28th a night of storytelling and singing took place in Aubane Community Centre around a nice homely warm fireside. A large crowd almost seventy people gathered from far and wide to participate in both song and storytelling.

Christmas Morning Climb
The Christmas morning tradition of walking up a Mushera mountain took place again on Christmas Day Morning. This year the Sponsorship Proceeds of the climb were in aid of St Patrick’s Hospital Marymount Hospice in Cork City. So after about an hour of moving uphill at our own pace, we got to the top at about 11:30. There was already a few dozen hardy souls plus a few dogs at the cross before us. By the time everyone had landed in the next half an hour, there was over One Hundred or so cheerful souls on top. After a few photos’ and a good long chat, we we headed back for base, and the warmth of Christmas Dinner.

Aubane Climb supports St Patrick’s Hospital Marymount Hospice

The Aubane Social Club took time to acknowledge a fundraising venture from one of its familiar hostings. All the participants in the club’s annual sponsored Mountain Climb which took place on Christmas Day morning were applauded for venturing out in great numbers to support the traditional staging and helping the Marymount Hospice Fund.

Aubane Social Club Chairman Gerard Mc Sweeney commended the close on 150 participants who made it the most successful undertaking by the club. The brilliant weather added to the occasion in a venture growing in success supported by record numbers. This mountain climb on Christmas Morning has been ongoing now for over thirty years with a different charity benefiting each year. Marymount Hospice offers an invaluable service and it is vital cog to people in County Cork A €6,500 cheque was presented by club member John Kelleher Snr to Noreen Cahill Marymount Hospice. Ms Cahill said that she was no stranger to the Aubane Area as her relatives come from Ivale and was delighted to be back in Aubane again. Mary Cahill expressed gratitude for the generous contribution toward enchancing the working of Marymount Hospice and their plans for a new building which will be built on the Old Greyhound Track.

The biggest crowd participated this year in our Good Friday Night Table Quiz with the dancing room full to the brim with over 25 Tables. The questions were set by quiz-masters Don and Michael O’Riordan. There were questions for everyone from children’s cartoons to old films, from history to local news, music and picture rounds and of course general knowledge. Congratulations to all involved.

All – Ireland Champions

Congratulations to the Millstreet Set Dancers whom were recently crowned All Ireland Champions in the All Ireland Scór na nOg Finals hosted in Athlone on Saturday 16th February The Set Dancers fulfilled their promise to collect a Munster title for the first time in January which allowed Millstreet and a Cork team enter new ground on representing the province in an All Ireland final at set dancing. But then on Saturday the 16th February their dream came through when their presentation of the Cavan Reel swept the boards much to the satisfaction of all concerned. The Set Dancing team involved were Allanah Barry, Leanne Daly, Kayleigh Sheahan, Aideen Buckley, Emer Twomey, Muireann Murphy, Orla Kiely and Regina Lane. The Aubane Social Club would also like to Congratulate their Team Coach Breeda Cremin, the lady who has been the person promoting and teaching set dancing in Millstreet over the years. Well Done to you all.

Congratulations to the Boherbue Instrumental Music Group who also won the All – Ireland Title in their Catergory in Athlone on the 16th February. Well Done to their mentors Mgt Kiely Nee Collins originally from Rathchoole and Alan Finn Buttevant who put a lot of work and time into tutoring the group on the run up to the finals.

Monument Unveiled honour World Champion Ploughman

On Saturday 16th February at Banteer Road, Kanturk a beautiful monument was unveiled to honour Tadhy Kelleher, the World Champion Ploughman. Denis Kelleher brother of Thady unveiled the monument and I have have told by many people that when the covers were taken off that the first thing that struck everyone was the true likeness of Tadhy down to the way he wore his cap. I would like to congratulate the Kelleher Family on unveiling such a beautiful sculpture in the memory of their brother Tadhy.

Annual Christmas Party

Well done to Fr. James McSweeney on the beautiful crib, which he erected near his home in Ballyvolane, Cork over the Christmas period. People admired it from near and far. Santa Claus Visited Aubane:
On Sunday 9th December Santa Claus visited all the boys and girls at the Aubane Community Centre. Santa arrived in great syle in a chauffeur driven Ford Cortina after his sleigh broke down just outside Aubane. He received a warm reception from the crowd. He met all the children there and got notice of what they all wanted for Christmas! They all got a early gift from santa,and were asked to be good, and were delighted with themselves.
There was also an bouncy castle and biscuits and teas for everyone. Thanks to all the people that helped and to our Club Member Jerry Kelleher and his wife Kathleen who put the day together, and especially to Santa who took the time out of his amazing schedule to be with us for a few hours. Also Thanks to the local Businesses who sponsored the day – William Kelleher Kitchens, Sean Kelleher Electrical, Sean Barrett Electrical, John O’Sullivan Bouncing Castles, C&D Plastering Contractors and Tim Lehane Roofing Contractor.

Set Dancing:
The weekly set dancing at the Aubane Community Centre continues every Monday night. All the best Polka sets and Hornpipes are promised in the lively sessions. The dancing on the floor commences at 9.15 pm. On the 23rd January the music will be provided the popular Ger Murphy, and on the 4h February 08 James Kelleher will provided the music

Mannix, Bridget “Bridie”(Cronin) of Quincy, December 29, 2007.

Wife of the late John F. Mannix. Daughter of the late Philip and Lena (Casey) Cronin, native of Millstreet, County Cork, Ireland. Loving mother of Paul Mannix, M. Patricia Gavin and Sheila and her husband Thomas Bell all of Quincy, Philip Mannix and his wife Joellen of Marshfield, Eileen and her husband Richard O’Brien of Weymouth and Noreen and her husband Martin Millane of Belmont. Sister of Sheila O’Callaghan, Margaret Linehan and Theresa Sheehan all of Ireland and the late Jeremiah Nora, Daniel, Mary, Gobnait Cronin and Helen Walsh. Bridie is also survived by her 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Bridget was a homemaker and devoted mother and grandmother. She was an active member of the Sacred Heart Ladies Sodality.

Annual Fancy Dress:

The Annual fancy dress took place on Friday (26th October) in the Wallis Arms Hotel. The annual event raises money for charity each year. This year the money raised went to the Cullen & District Special Needs Association & The Aubane Social Club. There was a fantastic turnout again this year with a very impressive display of costumes. The variety, the colour and the great effort that everybody went to in dressing up makes this night, one of the best in Millstreet. The winners for the best dressed this year went to Anita Sherlock and James Healy who both received fantastic prizes. During the past 7 years Jerry Kelleher and Tony Twomey have raised an incredible amount of over €25,000 for different charities. On Friday 9th November Jerry and Tony presented the two cheques to representatives of both the Aubane Social Club and the Cullen & District Special Needs Association. On the night also a beautiful hand painted slate clock was presented to Tony Twomey for the great the work he did in organising the event for the past 7 years. On Holidays:

It was great to see many people visiting the area since the last edition of the Clara News. My good friends Brigette & Pascal Friossart from Reims in France gave a trip home as also did Cisily Cashman from California to see her family in Tullig. The Long Family Aubane, Mamie Martin and Her Husband Ray from Chicago, Judy and Ann who reside now reside in London were also holidaying the area. I know Mamie is a regular reader of the Aubane Notes.

Accountancy Awards:

Congratulations to Noreen Lane Aubane on being the recipient of two awards from the Institute of Certified Public Accountants for her excellent achievement in Accountancy. Noreen came 1st in Ireland in Professional Auditing 1 & 2nd in Ireland in Professional 1 Strategic Management Accounting. She was also presented with another award from the Cork Institute of Technology in recognition of her great achievement at Oriel House Hotel in Ballincollig recently.

Set Dancing:

Santa Visits Aubane 2007

Santy was back in Aubane last Sunday the 8th December. A big crowd filled with anticipation and trepidation gathered to greet Santa who arrived a little later.
He met all the children there and got notice of what they all wanted for Christmas! They all got a early gift from santa,and were asked to be good, and were delighted with themselves.
Thanks to all the people that helped to put the day together, and especially to Santa who took the time out of his amazing schedule to be with us for a few hours.

Stained Glass Window – Ordination of a Priest

This window was in the old church. It consists of two sections which coalesce to form one scene – the Ordination of a priest. The window is in remembrance of Rev. Jerome Harding who died on 16 Nov. 1876, aged only 28 years. He was curate in Cahirciveen but his people were from Millstreet. His remains were brought to Millstreet for burial and it was a massive funeral. The inscription at the foot of the window reads: “in memoriam reverendi jeremiae harding: obiit die novembris decimasexta mdccclxxvi” (“In memory of Rev. Jerome Harding; he died 16th Nov. 1876”). New Clara aerials have arrived

Our local television channel continues to provide an increasing variety of features. Those yet to be broadcast include the production of a typical “Cork Evening Echo”, a special sequence from the recent 50th anniversary of the death of the renowned Seán Moylan. During that historic day in Kiskeam we got to meet and interview the Minster for Justice, Equality and Law Reform – Mr. Brian Linehan, T.D… as well as many members of the Moylan Family. We shall be recording a Christmas special within a family home for transmission over the festive season. We were delighted to join the celebrations for the All-Ireland winning Céilί Band …the Allow …. in Freemount. World Snooker Champion, Ken Doherty, was given a royal welcome to Rathmore Community Centre on Thursday, 15th November where this very approachable national sports hero also gave LTV2 an uplifting interview with Brendan Murphy on camera.

Sucess in Duhallow and County Scór

Millstreet swept to a double success in the Co. Scór Sinsir Finals in Ovens. A Set dance team of Gretta Lane, Elaine Cleary, Daphne O’Connor, Ciara Hickey, Sinead Flahive, Laura Lynch, Daniel Roche and Shane O’Riordan performed the Sliabh gCua set to regain county accolades. Millstreet added a win in the question time from a team of John Tarrant, Liam Flynn and Pat Sheehan.
Also competing for Millstreet was Jerry Doody in recitation while Jerry teamed up with Cian O’Mahony in novelty act.
Millstreet enjoyed success in the Duhallow Scór na bPaistí Finals hosted in the Edel Quinn, Kanturk . Taking victory in the set dancing were a team of Aine McAulliffe, Leanne Murphy, Jessica Duinne, Kate Buckley, Conor Twomey, Darren Kiely, Patrick Cotter and Oisin Murphy. The team will compete in the County final in the Eire Og GAA Pavillion, Ovens on next Sunday in a programme underway at 2.30pm

In the 2^nd half Keim started to control the game with good passing and Alan Burton, James Broxton, Ger Lenihan all had efforts saved. Neil Corkery was fouled just outside the box and he picked himself up to take the free kick and dispatch it to the net. With 15 minutes remaining Keim piled on the pressure and Kieran Murphy had an effort well saved. With time running out James Broxton put a ball into the Kilford box and the clearance fell to Finbarr O’Riordan who found the net with a shot that went in off the post. Keim finished out the final minutes to collect the points.

Kilcorney Calling

Welcome to Kilcorney calling which will take a look at the life and times of Kilcorney and it’s people. We hope that over time the news and stories on this page will give people from Kilcorney at home or around the world the chance to read and see the many and varied activities that take place in our Community. As we go into the new year lets take a few minutes to look back at the year that was in Kilcorney. The year began with the children of 5th Class of our National School preparing for their trip to Spain. The trip in conjunction with the Schola Project took place at Easter and was a wonderful experience for all concerned.

Minister of State Bat O Keeffe came to Kilcorney to turn the first sod on a new Sheltered Housing Development. The builders then moved in and the development is now in an advanced stage. This project will cost over 1 million euro with further plans for the forthcoming year. Cork County Council undertook a major upgrade of all local roads and later in the year a major upgrade of the village itself. The village got a new lighting system, new footpaths, and the carpark was tarred and lined. The overall cost of this was well in advance of half a million Euro.

Kilcorney has now been approved under the Clar Project for a set of solar power flashing lights for the village. These will cost over 10,000 Euro.

Work has also been completed on the driveway to the Church and around the church itself bringing it in line with the village itself. This work was undertaken by the Parish.

The last Sunday in May saw the annual fundraiser for the local river developments. This group over the past number of years have sat down river walks and leisure amenities and as the year came to an end news came through of a further allocation of 25,000 Euro from IRD Duhallow so we can expect to see even more improvements in the year ahead.

June saw the Annual Kilcorney Feis which is now almost 100 years old. The Feis is now being run by the Kilcorney Community Council with the help of the local National School.

June also saw the pupils of our National School get their holidays and by the time they came back in September and by the time they came back in September there were 2 new teachers on board. We wish best of luck to Christine O Shea and Noreen Nagle and we warmly welcome to our community Con Meade and Mairead Roche.

In August another major fundraiser took place at Moll Carthys Bridge this time to raise money for Rathcoole Lady Emma Harte who was fundraising for the Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Later in the month on a fine Friday Night mass was celebrated in our local graveyard a time to remember and to pray for all those people who have worked so hard down through the years to make Kilcorney what it is today.

In September the Community Council embarked on a major redevelopment of our Local Community Gym. This gym has been one of the great success stories over the past few years and with the financial backing of IRD Duhalllow has now been updated with new equipment and new shower rooms.

Later in the year the 50th Anniversary of the foundation of the Local Pioneer Association was marked with a Mass and a reception afterwards in the Community Centre. This was a very special occasion for a group of people who received Gold Pins marking 50 years unbroken membership of the Pioneer Association and also those people who received their Silver Pins marking their 25 years of unbroken membership.

Recipients of Gold Pins were Margaret Twomey, Michael O Callaghan, Joan Twomey, Ita Sexton, Michael Twomey, Paddy Leader, Christine Kelleher, Shiela Cremin, Timothy A Lane, Andrew Cremin, Bridie Cremin, Mary Linehan, Joan Tarrant, Catherine Buckley, Hannah Sheehan, John O Sullivan and Peggy Horgan.

Recipients of Silver Pins were Mary Curtin, Eileen Buckley, Hannah Mary O Riordan, John Buckley, Tim Buckley, Denis C O Sullivan, Marion Buckley, Delores Burke, Pat Golden, Martina Golden, Ned Tarrant, Majella O Donovan, Elizabeth O Connell and Sheila O Sullivan.

The Community Council AGM also saw major changes with long time servants Mary Cotter and Peg Dennehy stepping aside but however their vast experience will not be lost to the community as they have taken up positions with the Sheltered Housing Association.

As you can see from above it has been the year of “the spend in Kilcorney”. Our thanks go to all the state, semi-state, and local bodies for all the work and money that they have put into Kilcorney over the past year.

The end of the year is also a time of sadness for many families who have lost loved ones over the past year and our prayer is that those families will find comfort and peace in 2006.

Stained Glass Window of Oliver Plunket

Oliver Plunket (East Aisle – first window on left up from door): St. Patricks Church, Millstreet

Oliver Plunket (1625-1681) was appointed archbishop of Armagh in 1669. The special cross he is holding in his left hand is a patriarchal or archiepiscopal cross. He was one of only two Catholic bishops in Ireland at that time and as a result he had a huge work-load – within the first few months of his appointment, he confirmed 10,000 people. He had good relations with the Protestant clergy and gentry. However, the panic caused by the false allegations of Titus Oates in 1678 resulted in his arrest. He was charged in Dundalk with plotting to bring 20,000 French soldiers into Ireland. He was imprisoned in Newgate in England until 1681. There was no basis whatever for the allegations brought against him but he wasn’t given time or opportunity to defend himself. He wrote a most interesting letter from prison a few days before his execution: “Sentence of death was passed against me on the fifteenth. It has not caused me the least terror or deprived me of even a quarter of an hour’s sleep. I am as innocent of all treason as the child born yesterday. As for my character, profession and function, I did own it publicly, and that being also a motive of my death, I die most willingly. And being the first among the Irish, I shall, with God’s grace, give good example to the others not to fear death. I expect daily to be brought to the place of execution where my bowels are to be cut out and burned before my face, and then my head to be cut off.” This is the barbaric death he suffered in Tyburn on 1st July 1684 – it is indicated in the lower part of the window. When this window was made, Oliver Plunket was “Blessed” but he was canonized in 1976 and his feast is on 1st July.

The stained glass window was erected by Cornelius D. Crowley (1879-1972), of Finnstown House, Lucan, Co Dublin, Roscrea, Co Tipperary, and originally from Coole House, Millstreet. He was anxious to be remembered in his native Millstreet, and so in 1944 erected this window (and another at the same time) to his parents, Denis and Maria Crowley, in Saint Patrick’s Church, Millstreet, in 1944.

“At that time, Finnstown House was the home of my Great Uncle Con and Great-Aunt Hannah. Cornelius D. Crowley (1879-1972), of Finnstown House, Lucan, Co Dublin, and Roscrea, Co Tipperary, was originally from Millstreet, Co Cork. He was one of my great-uncles, a brother of my grandmother, Maria (Crowley) Murphy (1882-1953) of Millstreet, Co Cork.
For many years Con Crowley was a director of the Roscrea Meat Company with his brother Jeremiah D. Crowley of Wallstown Castle, Castltownroche, Co Cork – the other directors included Robert Briscoe TD and G Fasenfeld. After World War II, Con Crowley” – by Patrick Comerford

Our talented musicians never let us down, we know we can always depend on Kathleen O’Keeffe, Marie Casey, Finbar Murphy, Seamus Buckley and towards the end we were joined by the Linehan Family and friends from Millstreet.

Special mention was made of the late Alice O’Sullivan, Lisnaboy when her recent death was referred to. She was a true friend of the Association from the beginning in 1979 and always supported the many fundraising functions and events that are ongoing. Her pleasant smile and her warm hand of friendship will be sadly missed from all these events. Sympathy was extended to the O’Sullivan Family who are so actively involved in the Association. May she Rest in Peace.

The origins and history of:

Cullen & District Friends of the Handicapped

For decades past parents and families of mentally handicapped children had soldiered alone to care for their special children. With the advent of Community Care and community involvement in all aspects of Christian living, group at local level would be of tremendous benefit to everyone involved. Inspired by the wonderful work being done by other enthusiastic groups in outlying parishes under the auspices of Cork Polio, the wheels were set in motion for a new initiative in this respect.

Officials from Cork Polio and General After-care Association were invited to attend the inaugral meeting which took place in Cullen Community Centre (The Old Technical School) on April 10th 1979. Attendance by the local community exceeded all expectations which was very heartening indeed. Cork Polio officials present were John Birmingham, John Teegan, Con Dennehy and Mrs Dennehy. They presented a very informative programme consisting of an introduction talk by John Birmingham followed by a slide presentation showing the work being done by Cork Polio in the care of the mentally handicapped.

A local committee was formed. The first elected officers of the newly formed “Association for Parents and Friends of the Mentally Handicapped” were as follows:

Having established the existence of a compact committee and a much larger support group, it was decided to plan a major fundraising event. Many ideas were proposed, but the final choice was an old time threshing and vintage exhibition, which became known as “The Gala Harvest Afternoon”
