Investigating the Quality of LTV Signal

So we come to the third section of our recent investigation regarding the quality of LTV reception in the Duhallow and Sliabh Luachra areas.   Having firstly visited the new transmitter setting to the west of Millstreet town to determine that it was working well we continued our journey westwards.   Perfect signal was obtained as we passed Killarney Road….Next best area for reception was at Ballydaly Church.  We also obtained a good signal in the Knocknagullane area.   The signal then weakened until we reached Knocknaloman Cross.   It was clear to Dan Joe that a large area of the Caherbarnagh area were receiving a good signal.   The signal strengthened as we came close to the Cadbury Factory and on the eastern side of Rathmore Village.   Apparently Gneeveguilla, Knocknagree and Boherbue obtain quite a good signal from Channel 35 UHF and some areas receive the broadcast from both Channels 35 and 30.   As we travelled along the New Line from Rathmore, passing Carrigaline and proceeding onwards to the Sandpit House we noted that it was Channel 30 which brings the transmission from beyond the Cullen Crossroads.   More sharing of our findings tomorrow.  (S.R.)

Local Television Signal….Common Questions

As promised we share the first part of our findings following a trip throughout the Duhallow and Sliabh Luachra areas yesterday.

One of the most Common Questions being asked about LTV reception:

“We received quite a good reception on air up to last year…Now we no longer seem to be able to receive any signal.  How do we now continue to receive the weekly broadcasts?”

One of the main reasons for this is that we used a VHF transmitter from the Mushera area for years.   Use of VHF was no longer permitted from last year thus losing that signal which used to travel far to areas like Taur, Newmarket and could even be received on high ground in areas like Dingle and Castleisland.   So now we can only use the UHF signal which does not travel as far as VHF.  The new signal we’ve been using in this area is Channel 31 UHF from the Carriganima area (This is on a different frequency from last year).   However, lots of areas in Millstreet Town and to the west of the town and beyond could not avail of that signal so Dan Joe Kelleher of LTV suggested that a transmitter placed to the west of the town could pick up the Carriganima signal and redistribute it to a large section of the town and to a large wide area to the west of Millstreet including Gneeveguilla, parts of Rathmore, Knocknagree, the New Line (Rathmore to Sandpit House Road) etc..   Although we did not have funds for this development we decided in the spirit of providing to a wider audience not only LTV2 Millstreet but also LTV1 and the Sunday Specials, to personally finance this extension of the on-air signal.   We were also very fortunate to receive the supremely kind permission of a local family to transmit from their setting in ideal conditions.   Use of the electricity in constant use for this facility is gauged by meter.    The signal from this new transmitter located to the west of the town is proving most successful and is available on Channel 35 UHF.   When LTV is not being transmitted Dan Joe broadcasts the Sky Channel EWTN  (the religious channel) on a 24/7 basis.    Tomorrow we shall share how we found the quality of the signal in the areas we visited and we also explore the very real advantage of online transmission as illustrated by the success of the placing of our weekly LTV2 programmes on You Tube (dedicatedly uploaded by Bernard) making the broadcast available worldwide.  If you have any questions please email millstreetmuseum @eircom.net …. LTV Transmission Tonight Will Focus on Aubane and Boherbue

Thanks to the dedication of Dan Joe Kelleher of LTV vital repairs were carried out over the past few days to restore the LTV UHF signal on Channels 30 and 35.   Two separate faults were corrected and thankfully we now have a perfect signal again.   Thank you, Dan Joe, for your inspiring hard work over these days in restoring the signal in time for tonight’s transmission at 10.00 when we have the programme which was intended to be broadcast last week but due to the stormy weather could not be transmitted.   So Thursday’s broadcast includes a variety of excerpts from various  past programmes beginning with a visit in 2004 to “The Rambling House” in Boherbue where hopefully we shall get to see one of the very best recordings ever of the traditional “Brush Dance”. And we finish with a delightful “Round the Fireside in Aubane” feature recorded in 1998 at the home of a French Family who have been coming on an annual basis to this wonderful holiday home in Aubane, Millstreet and who are most interested and proficient in Irish and Breton traditional music.  Happy viewing!     (S.R.)

Splendid Variety in This Evening’s LTV Broadcast….Due to Weather Conditions This Transmission Rescheduled for Broadcast at a Future Date

Dan Joe Kelleher of LTV has compiled a wonderful selection of past and present video footage for this evening’s LTV Sunday broadcast.   The following is the intended schedule:

5.30pm        Mass from St. John’s Well, Mushera in June 2013.  This is a repeat showing by popular request.  The Celebrant is Fr. Jackie Corkery.

6.30pm        A variety of excerpts from various current and past programmes beginning with Macroom’s Annual New Year’s Day Hunt 2014.    This is followed by a brief visit to the 2013 Christmas Pantomime at the Briery Gap in Macroom entitled “Babes in the Wood”.  Next we have a recording from “Éigse” 2004 in Ballyvourney.   We then visit “The Rambling House” in Boherbue where hopefully we shall get to see one of the very best recordings ever of the traditional “Brush Dance”.   And we finish with a delightful “Round the Fireside” feature recorded in the home of a French Family who have been coming on an annual basis to this wonderful holiday home in Aubane and who are most interested and proficient in Irish and Breton traditional music.   This evening’s LTV transmission is scheduled to conclude at 8.30 or soon thereafter.   Happy viewing!      (S.R.)

UPDATE:  Weather conditions appear to have affected transmission equipment necessary for broadcasting on Channels 30 and 35 UHF which serve the Millstreet area.   Dan Joe has indicated that the above programme line-up will be retransmitted at a future date when the equipment faults are corrected.   It’s quite possible that the current broadcast may be available in the LTV1 Macroom area and its surroundings.   Apologies for this interruption in transmission but one has no control over weather related effects.   (S.R.)

A Very Special Music Programme on LTV Tonight from 9.45 p.m.

Dan Joe Kelleher of LTV has alerted us to the fact that he will be broadcasting a truly delightful programme recorded in 1998.   It was recorded in Millstreet Country Park at Christmas 1998 when the MC was the famous Seán Ó Sé.   This Concert is one and a half hours in duration.     The programme is available on Channel 30 and 35 UHF.    When LTV is not being transmitted EWTN is seen.  (S.R.)

Tuning into LTV – New Broadcasting Season Begins

As indicated last week – LTV is scheduled to begin its new broadcasting season on Wednesday, 13th Nov. at 9.30 pm (LTV Macroom area) and on Thursday, 14th Nov. at 10.00 pm (LTV2 Millstreet).   Due to the dedication and skill of LTV Founder, Dan Joe Kelleher and with the kind cooperation of a number of local Millstreet people a wider and clearer reception will now be received in the Millstreet, Duhallow and Sliabh Luachra areas also extending into the Gneeveguilla and some areas of Rathmore.  To receive reception one needs to retune analogue settings (available in menu “settings”).   When scanning is complete one will now have the new channel – either UHF Channel 30 or UHF Channel 35 (or both in certain areas of Millstreet).   All this depends on how strong the signal is in any given area.   The UHF Channel 30 signal comes from the Carriganima direction whereas the UHF Channel 35 signal comes from the western side of Millstreet Town.  This is now saved and is presently transmitting the EWTN (Religious) Channel.  It will soon show promotions for the new LTV Season and will change to LTV1 and LTV2 on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at the designated broadcast times.   LTV 2 will also,  due to the dedication and skill of Bernard Crowley, be available on www.millstreet.ie.   Happy viewing!  (S.R.)
