In Passing – April 2010

Musician Awards
We thank Danny O’Neill, Cork whose mother is Mary, daughter of Rosie Kelleher, Murphy’s Terrace, Millstreet, for the following uplifting information regarding the impressive success of two local very talented musicians (whose photographs appear on millstreet.ie). Here is Danny’s very fine article:
Recently I was at a concert in UCC where Kenneth Cremin, son of Breda and Denis from the Priest Cross Millstreet and Cáit Buckley with connections to Aubane both received the 2010 “Doc Gleeson” award for Musical Achievement at a special concert held at the Aula Maxima, Main Campus in UCC. Kenneth played a piece of Classical music by Steve Reich on the electric guitar while Cáit Buckley played a collection of music on the harp. [read more …] “In Passing – April 2010”

Clara Mountain Run 2010

Local runners Chris Murphy and Mick Mullane on their way to the finish at the Grotto on the Clara road during the Clara Mountain Run last week

The Clara Mountain Run was run recently on the evening of Sunday 18th April. It was a lovely evening and for once the mountain was dry, so it was easier than other years. Over 40 brave runners started at the Presbytery on the Clara Road just after 7pm, heading back the Clara Road to the grotto and turning up Mount Leader and further onto Clara. Just over half an hour later it was won by Irish International Martin Bradshaw who emerged out of a group of three runners in the last 500m to take a comfortable victory.

There were some locals in the race field also: Michael Healy, Mick Mullane, Chris Murphy, Mary Finn and Shane Browne.

Brother Vincent Corkery’s Datoship

Brother Vincent J. Corkery, Director of La Salle Centre in Ipoh, described the datukship conferred on him in conjunction with the Sultan of Perak’s 82nd birthday as “a signal” of recognition for St Michael’s Institution as a long established beacon of excellence, where young people without distinction are prepared to take their place in society and serve with honesty and dedication.
He is happy to receive the award, Dato’ Paduka Mahkota Perak (DPMP), on behalf of the La Salle Brothers and St Michael’s Institution. “It will be greeted with joy amongst the thousands of our ever faithful alumni”, he said.
Brother Vincent, who was dressed in the ceremonial costume of Perak’s dato, received the award at an investiture ceremony in the throne room of Istana Iskandariah in Kuala Kangsar on April 19. A total of 912 people, including the Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, were conferred with awards and medals in the birthday’s honour list.

Regional Report 1010 – 27th April 2010

by

Eily Buckley

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1010 from Millstreet. Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this lovely soft but breezy Tuesday morning. This week I’d like to convey our heartiest congratulations to my dear brother, Bro. Vincent Corkery, of the De La Salle order who has been working in Malaysia for over sixty years and in appreciation of him great work, the Sultan of Perak (head of state in Perak, Malaysia) of that country conferred him with the highest honour in the land, namely the DATO title. It would be the equivalent of knighthood in this part of the world. He loves Ireland and comes home every year, but his Heart is in his beloved Malaysia. In accepting this great honour he said he was taking it on behalf of all missionaries, who worked in that land including all the Sisters of the Dishane Order .

Many congratulations to our own Sean Radley on receiving a very prestigious Award at UCC recently.

========

So where was it taken from? In short, the back of the old boys school on Clara Road, across from the Presbytery, which are now dwelling houses.

Plotting a line from the forestry on the north side of Clara to the side of Westbourne House (as in the photo), leaves you at the back of the old boys school.  (see the plot lines below)

It was also taken from an elevated position (at first we though it was from an upstairs window, but the school only got an upstairs after it was sold as a school, and a second floor built during its conversion into dwelling houses.

Looking below at the OSI map from about 1900, this is where it would have been taken from. The low walls in the foreground of the original photo match the walls in the map below.Below is the old Boys National School on the Clara Road. The the photo of Clara was most likely taken from behind this building. This photo is also part of the Lawrence collection.

Eire Og 1-05 Millstreet 1-04

Co Premier 2 Minor Football Championship
Eire Og 1-05 Millstreet 1-04

Two late points from Daniel O’Connor saw Eire Og advance to Round 3 after this Co Premier 2 Minor Football Championship opening round game against Millstreet which was played in Carrigadrohid on Wednesday (7th April) evening.

After a tentative opening by both sides Eire Og finally got off the mark when in the 6th minute Ronan Dennehy sent over a neat point. As both sides continued to miss chances Eire Og began to come more into the game and with Craig O’Driscoll, Killian Murphy, Sean O’Connor, Daniel O’Shea, Barry McDonagh and Daniel O’Connor leading by example chances began to fall their way. Although scores were still at a premium they kept pressing forward and were rewarded with a brace of pointed frees from O’Connor to put themselves three up by the 21st minute. Féile Cheoil Tribute to Stephen Carroll

The Annual Millstreet Féile Cheoil was organised by the Millstreet Branch of CCÉ (Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann) and held at Millstreet Community School on Sunday, 18th April 2010. During that evening a special tribute was paid to the late Stephen Carroll who had been  a dedicated Judge at a number of Féile Cheoil events but who sadly died at such a young age since last year’s event.   Stephen’s parents, Michael & Sheila as well as family members, Adrian & Sinéad from the Kilcummin/Gneeveguilla area were present to witness the presentation of the new Stephen Carroll Shield for Button Accordian to Damien Mullane who was this year’s Judge in that competition.   It was James Linehan and Michael O’Riordan of Millstreet CCÉ who organised this special and lasting tribute to the late Stephen.   Stephen had always been such an obliging, talented, welcoming and sincere Friend to so many.   We include a picture (taken in the hospitality room)  from Millstreet Féile Cheoil 2009 (19th April) where Stephen is seated first from left.   Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal. (Seán Radley for www.millstreet.ie).

Memories Of The Irish Travellers

The travellers parked their horse drawn vans at the Shannaknock cross when I was a young boy
And recalling such good memories is a thing I still enjoy
And though their colorful Romany caravans are no longer to be seen
Good memories last a life time and we recall what has been.
.
I loved their colorful pinto horses with white patches through the brown
On March the first they bought and sold them at the horse fair in Millstreet Town
In the early sixties the increase on automobile traffic brought an end to the horse drawn van
And jeeps and motor vans became the transport of the born to wander clan.
.
At the cross road around their camp fire on a starry Winter’s night
They played their tunes and sung their songs under the pale moonlight
And something lost forever that won’t be found again
And only the fond memories of the past now does remain
.
Of Ireland in the fifties and the early sixties long before I reached my prime
When the travellers travelled in their horse drawn vans that is going back in time
They added so much colour to the green old countryside
As the byroads of the County they travelled far and wide.
