As we come to the end of the very first St. Brigid’s Bank Holiday on this Monday, 6th Feb. 2023 we reflect on the Feast Day itself on Wednesday, 1st Feb. when many people acquired a special St. Brigid’s Cross in Church to place in their homes over the next year. Here we meet Margaret Kelleher and Betty O’Regan displaying the precious Crosses near the statue of St. Brigid in memory of the late Breeda Kelleher of Station Road who always arranged to renew the Cross on the statue every 1st Feb. having made scores of Crosses for distribution to very many people. This year, Breeda’s son, Joseph, kindly arranged to collect the rushes necessary for the making of the Crosses and Margaret Kelleher has superbly continued Breeda’s tradition in making several Crosses and varnished them also for distribution not only in Church but far beyond – very especially remembering Breeda’s inspiring annual gesture in honour of St. Brigid. Feast of St. Brigid on Wednesday 1st Feb. 2023
Not only are we going to have the celebration of the Feast Day of St. Brigid on this Wednesday, 1st February 2023 but on Monday, 6th February we
shall experience the very first St. Brigid’s Bank Holiday. Fr. Paddy O’Byrne in his very welcoming shop at West End, Millstreet has a wonderful selection (illustrated below) of religious items relating to St. Brigid. On the Eve of the Feast Day, tonight, there is a very strong tradition in our area of leaving outdoors a handkerchief or a little cloth as it is believed that St. Brigid blesses the item during the night. Lord, as we celebrate your birth among us may our hearts be filled with the joy of your presence.
May our families be blessed from the abundance of your goodness.
May our world be filled with the wonder of your peace.
May we rejoice and be glad that you are not far away from anyone of us
this Christmas.

Dear Parishioners,
The past three years have seen a lot of changes in our Parish,
our country and our world. Changes that previously would
have been hard to imagine, but changes that have impacted
all our lives in some way.
This Christmas we remember all those who have had
to leave their homeland and travel to different parts of the world
to seek refuge and we also remember those who are unable to
leave their homes. Our hope for 2023 is that peace will be restored
in the troubled parts of our world.
The changes in our Pastoral area came with Dromtariffe not having
a resident priest any longer and this has impacted on all our
Parishes and on our duties.
Here in this Parish, we are blessed with a strong faith community,
and this weekend I want to acknowledge the work and commitment
of the volunteers in each of our 3 Churches throughout the year.
A sincere thank you to our choirs, readers, Eucharistic Ministers,
basket collectors, altar society, those who erect our Sacred
Spaces and Cribs, our weekly Adorers and Adoration Committee,
The Legion of Mary members and those who are on our Pastoral,
Finance and Safeguarding committees. Your support together
with the support of the Parish Secretary and Sacristans
is greatly appreciated.
I ask God’s blessing on all families in our Parish and think of your
loved ones who won’t be home this year.
I also remember those in our Parish who are worried, anxious,
troubled, sick, grieving or alone this Christmas.
As we prepare for Christmas let us take a moment to remember the
message of Christmas, which is a message of hope. This hope comes
from the birth of Our Lord wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in
a humble manager because from such a small beginning the wonder
of God’s love for us can be seen and this is what gives us hope.
To conclude I want to thank you for your continued support
and may the greetings of joy, peace and goodwill be yours this
Christmas Season.

Basket collections will return at weekend Masses in Millstreet on the weekend 22nd/23 October. Rotas will be posted during the coming week to our parishioners who have submitted their names to continue as collectors. If anyone is interested in joining this rota please contact our Parish Office.

- MILLSTREET VINTAGE CLUB TRACTOR RUN will take place on next Sunday 16th October in aid of C.A.R.T. Registration at Carriganima Pub from 10.30a.m. and departing at 12 noon.
- Mallow Literacy Volunteer Course – Cork College of FET Mallow Centre: Cork ETB are currently recruiting volunteers to train as Adult Literacy Tutors on Tuesday 11th October between 7 & 9.30p.m. for 6 weeks. If you are interested in training as a literacy tutor and would like more information, please contact Marion 022- 42322.

A Very Happy Birthday to Fr. Paddy O’Byrne
On this Feast of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, 7th Oct. 2022 Canon John Fitzgerald, P.P. revealed at the beginning of the 7.30pm First Friday Mass that today is Fr. Paddy O’Byrne’s 87th Birthday. Fr. Paddy concelebrated Mass with Canon John which was in memory of the late Eily May, Brendan and Connie Hickey. After Mass we photographed Fr. Paddy with members of the Hickey Family. We also learned from Diarmuid Murphy that the late James Anthony Murphy would have been 34 on this Friday also. Tap on the images below to enlarge. (S.R.)
Magnificent Marian Grotto Beautifully Restored & Blessed
On Sunday afternoon, 2nd Oct. 2022, in the exquisite setting of St. Joseph’s Gardens, West End, Millstreet – formerly the location of Presentation Convent since 1840 – a truly historic occasion took place when Fr. Paddy O’Byrne blessed the magnificently restored Marian Grotto in the presence of a very impressed congregation. Due to the inspirational dedication of an enthusiastic Group which included John Casey, Eugene Barrett, Hughie Dunne, Pauline Byrne and Tony McHugh – the hugely successful Project of the restoration of the original Grotto has been supremely realised with its new Statue of Our Lady (The original Statue was presented some years ago to the people of Sherkin Island in West Cork.), its marvellously creative landscaping with beautiful floral arrangements and its splendid Welcome Bench. Sr. Kathleen Given representing the Presentation Sisters shares a central guiding role also (although prefers to be in the quiet background) and was most impressed as was Fr. Paddy O’Byrne when John and the inspiring Team of Volunteers first suggested the Project. Tony also indicates that further development at the Marian Grotto is envisaged. Sincere congratulations to All on such an amazing achievement. In time to come a special “Nuns’ Walk” sign is to be put in place and it will then be indicated if public access is permitted.
