War Meeting in Carriganima

WAR MEETING AT CARRIGANIMA: A successful meeting was held at Carriganima last Sunday (13th February 1916) in furtherance of Lord Wimborne’s recruiting scheme… During the progress of the meeting a number of young men, who were said to have been members of the local corps of Irish Volunteers marched past the meeting, and after having gone about one hundred yards disbanded, when the bulk of them returned and joined the crowd, listening until the proceedings concluded.

Halfway between Macroom and Millstreet, Co Cork, Carriganima was the intended rallying point for hundreds of Irish Volunteers from Cork city and county on Easter Sunday, April 23, 1916. The plan was for them move early on Monday to disrupt military attempts to stop German guns being brought by rail from Kerry on the line near Rathmore and Millstreet. Although the plan was deemed pointless when the arms landing was foiled days earlier, almost 500 Volunteers marched to Macroom and Carriganima.

Eily’s update 16th February

eily1

Dia is Muire dhaiobh go léir a chairde.

Having stepped off from the long line of flu victims I am about ready to get back to normal life again. But my sympathy goes out to all those who are still battling with the sore throats, muscle pains, upset tummies and cold sores, not a nice place to be. But for as long as we can recall, the weeks and months after Christmas were always the ones for the flu’s and colds. Schools were often closed and people of the land under extra pressure to care for the animals. But in spite of all, the Spring lambs and Spring flowers never failed to come. So we live in hope.

Many congratulations to the lovely Joan Casey on receiving the Cork Volunteer of the Year 2015 Award from the Cork County Camogie Association. The Honours were given in appreciation of her great work, including washing the jerseys, and so on at local level, and representing her Club on the County Board.

A Gala Ball was held at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Friday night to make the occasion, every last ticket was sold out and, lovely Joan was lauded by young and not so young. We wish Joan every success when she will represent Cork at the All-Ireland Volunteer of the Year awards Final which will be held at CrokePark on Saturday Feb 20th.

The AGM of the Camogie Club will be held on Tuesday Feb 23rd in the Parish Centre starting at 8.30.

The AGM of the Aubane Social Club will be held on Thursday Feb 18th, starting at 8.30.

Millstreet Athletic Club started training courses at the GAA Hall this week.  From 7-8. Registration forms are available from the Club.
