Where The Road Takes Me – Sunday 10th Oct.

Having been described as a ‘Pip-Squeak’ Organisation by the late Charles J. Haughey, the NFA, later to become the IFA, decided to show the former Agriculture Minister at the time, that they were anything but.

Fifty five years ago, almost to the day, sixteen West Cork farmers began a gruelling 211 mile protest walk from Bantry to Dublin.  By the time they had reached Dublin, thirty thousand farmers had converged on Dáil Éireann.

Eleven of those West Cork farmers are since deceased.  Of the five remaining,  John Greene meets three of them on this week’s edition of ‘Where the road takes me’.

In the first of a two-part programme we also meet some of those who remained behind to look after farm, home and family.  We also get access to the diary of Seán O’Brien of Goulanes, one of the six deceased.  Extracts from it are read by his Grandson Shane.
