Historic Graves Recording in Drishane Cemetery on Tuesday 3rd March

The annual blessing (pictured above) of the graves at Drishane Cemetery on Sunday, 11/11/2012.  On this Tuesday, 3rd March 2915 a group coordinated by IRD Duhallow and under the overall leadership of John Tierney,  will – under the guidance on this occasion of Mary Hackett from Waterford and formerly of Rathmore –  be doing a very interesting recording of the graves in Drishane Cemetery from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. on Tuesday.  A number of days have already been devoted to work on Drishane Cemetery but at least one further day is necessary to complete this all-important Project.   Mary has indicated that LOCAL PEOPLE WHO WOULD VOLUNTEER TO ASSIST AT DRISHANE CEMETERY ON TUESDAY, 3rd MARCH ANYTIME FROM 9.30 TO 4.30 WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.   People interested in participating are very welcome to just arrive on the day at Drishane Cemetery where guidance on helping will be provided.   Full details, if required, from Mary McHugh at IRD Duhallow – 029 60633.    (S.R.)

  1. I notice that a survey of Drishane cemetry is taking place this week. I have been researching my family history for some years now, that is the family of John (Jack the Clerk) Murphy of 3 West End- my mother Johanna was his daughter. I have been trying to find out where my grandfather’s sister Honora (also known as Nora or Nonie). is buried. I think it might be in Drishane. She was born/baptised on 26 September 1871. Her parents were Michael Murphy and Johanna Murphy (nee Buckley). She did not marry as far as I know but she lived with the family at 3 West End. In the Liber Defunctorum in the Millstreet parish office starting from 1928 and written by my grandfather (the first entry is of the death on 20 Jan 1928 of my grandfather’s mother Johanna ) there is an entry of the death of a Honora Murphy aged 70 on 27 April 1939 buried in Drishane 29 April 1939 whose next of kin was Joannes i.e John Murphy. My grandfather, his mother and subsequent members of the family are all buried in the family grave in the graveyard beside the church in Millstreet but neither Honora or her father Michael are mentioned on the gravestone. If anyone involved in the survey comes across a gravestone similar to the above details I would very much appreciate if they would let me know. Some other relevant details may be that Honora and my grandfather’s grandparents were Daniel and Honora Murphy- their other grandparents were Patrick and Honora Buckley- and my grandfather had two brothers Patsy and Daniel . Neither married , Patsy died young and Daniel died sometime early in the 20th century. My grandfather had another brother Tim who was a postman but he and his family are buried in their own grave in Millstreet graveyard.
