Eily’s update – 15th March

Oh the joy of sunny days. With the lambs prancing in the fields and the Spring Flowers swaying in the crisp air.

The Centenary celebrations for 1916 go on and we are all being schooled in the brave efforts that were made by our people to secure a free state for us to enjoy. The stories get more harrowing as the time goes on and I hope that we are making ourselves worthy of the terrible sacrifices that were made for us.

The local book ‘Ready Willing and Waiting’ was launched at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Wednesday night. And there wasn’t an empty seat in the house. You’d hear a pin drop for the whole hour while historian Gerry White from Cork related the stories of 1916.

The book was written by Noreen Meaney, daughter of ex government minister Tom, and granddaughter of his renowned father, Big Con. Noreen had the full support of the local Monuments Committee for her great work.

The book highlights the large number of people from the Millstreet area who took part in the war. Many of their descendents were in the Hall on the night, and the book carried pictures of them and of the heroic part that they played.

At €12 each the book is a must for every household and it is widely available in all the local shops as well as further afield.  Congratulations to all involved in the great venture.
