Millstreet Hospital to stay open … for now

From finegael.ie: Fine Gael Deputy for Cork North West, Áine Collins, has reassured Millstreet residents that their community hospital will remain open for now. Deputy Collins went on to say that the establishment of a local action group could go some way to ensuring the long-term viability of the Hospital.

Speaking at a specially convened meeting in the Wallis Arms Hotel in Millstreet recently, Deputy Collins said: ‘I am delighted to announce that following on from discussions I have had with Department of Health officials about the future of the Millstreet Community Hospital, I can confirm that it will not be closing this year under the recently proposed budgetary cuts’.

“According to the Department of Health, the future of Millstreet Hospital is safe for now. Obviously this is a situation which I will monitor closely, as the loss of the Community Hospital would have a huge impact on the local area.

“I have proposed setting up a action group to listen to and represent local interests where the future development of the Hospital is concerned.

“A local action group would be best placed to monitor the situation and ensure that the long-term viability of Millstreet Community Hospital is maintained. The group would represent the interests of those who live locally and who would be most heavily impacted by any changes. The provision of community care is essential to those who live in Millstreet and its surrounding areas. The hospital is an invaluable part of our community and, I am delighted to say, will remain so for the foreseeable future.”

  1. Millstreet has the right to it’s Hospital because when people get old they need to feel safe and have staff who they know to look after them. Putting pressure on Millstreet Hospital about cuts puts stress on everyone. So I say stop playing games with people’s lives.

  2. Is anyone locally pursuing building an addition to the hospital so that it will have the minimum required number of beds to satisfy the requirements of the decisionmakers in Dublin? They seem to believe that the smaller facilities are not capable of functioning economically unless they meet certain size standards.

  3. There was a big public meeting in the Edel Quinn Hall, Kanturk last night concerning the fate Kanturk hospital. Apparently Áine Collins TD mentioned the possibility of 2 staff members having to go to Millstreet hospital. I don’t like the sound of that. As a community we need to stand up together for Millstreet Hospital, sooner rather than later.

  4. Heard that there is a public meeting been organised about our Ambulance
