President Mary Robinson’s Speech at the opening of the Canon O’Donovan Centre

SPEAKING NOTES FOR PRESIDENT ROBINSON AT THE OPENING OF MILLSTREET SHELTERED HOUSING & DAY CENTRE ON SUNDAY 18TH DECEMBER, 1994

–         I very much appreciate your generous invitation to be present today at the opening of the Sheltered Housing and Day Care Centre here in Millstreet.  I would especially like to thank Mr. Michael Feeley, Chairman of the Millstreet & District Housing Association, for asking me to perform this pleasant task.  I am always glad of opportunities to meet with members of voluntary bodies and to assist and encourage them in their activities.-         I would like to take this opportunity to compliment the Millstreet & District Housing Association Ltd. for their initiative in developing this new project.  I note that the Association was formed in 1991 and I am greatly impressed that so much work has been completed in such a short space of time.

–         This Ceremony here today is the culmination of a great deal of detailed planning and hard work.  This project is also a testimony to the generous spirit of the people of Millstreet.  A special thanks must be extended to St. Brendan’s Trust and the late Canon Donagh O’Donovan who donated the site for this development.  I would also like to draw attention to the great efforts involved in local fund-raising which contributed over £90,000 towards the cost of this Housing Scheme and enabled the Association’s aspirations to become a reality.

–         The standard of this new facility is very impressive.  The houses are self-contained and centrally heated.  The Day Care Centre will provide the focus within this Housing Scheme, offering kitchen, laundry and recreational facilities for the residents.  Such a facility allows the elderly to continue to live independently and with dignity.  It is a comforting example of the esteem in which the people of Millstreet hold older people that they should devote their time and money to such an enterprise.

–         In conclusion, I would like to wish the Millstreet & District Housing Association Ltd. every good wish for this new scheme and any further developments which may occur in the future.  I am confident that this residence will provide a significant improvement in the lives of all who live here.  I now take great pleasure in declaring the Millstreet Sheltered Housing and Day-Care Centre officially open.
