On this week’s edition of ‘Where the road takes me’, John Greene concludes the two part programme on the history of the Jeffers family of Bandon.
Author of ‘Jeffers of Bandon – A history’, Isla Jeffers speaks about the burning of Castle Bernard by the IRA in 1921.
From our archives, we get an as close as possible first hand account of what transpired at Castle Bernard from the nephew of the officer in charge of the IRA unit Seán Hales.
And…….
Jeffers open Bandon’s first café in the 1950s and West Cork’s first Supermarket in 1960. However, a little tweaking was necessary, when a sign which read ‘Please take a basket’, was taken literally by customers.
