Organisers of the Mini-Festival in 1995

“These were just some of the many people who assisted in the organising of the mini festival which was run in conjunction with the big fight (Collins v Eubank in 1995)  in Green Glens and who also assisted as stewards on the night.”

Avondhu

Once more the Summer decks the hills round dear old Millstreet town
The breezes waft the scent from flowers of green Duhallow down
The sunshine chases shadows fleet o’er Muskery’s meadows wide
And light and shade guild every glade by sweet Blackwater’s side

Sweet it is when Clara hill is clad in sunset glow
And happy lovers shyly meet in many a vale below
They breathe the balmy Irish air and roam the meadows through
Where Finnow witching waters join the far famed Avondhu

Oh. Avondhu by many a field your shadowed waters glide
Where I have life[s golden hours your restful banks beside
Now scattered afar the comrades all my careless boyhood knew
Alas we’ll never meet again beside sweet Avondhu

Some sleep beside that grand old stream in the graveyard on the hill
They closed their eyes in dreamless death while life seemed pleasant still
Light lay the sod upon their clay may heaven’s sweetest dew
For ever bless each comrade’s grave beside sweet Avondhu

The fairest land on earth art thou Oh Ireland grá mo chroí
Your Exiles brave in every land are wrath to make you free
Their dearest hope that yet some day in Freedoms light they’ll view
Their Native hills that sleep for aye beside sweet Avondhu

Near record high pressures have settled over Ireland giving us cloudless skies, but cool days and cold nights, as well as the chance to escape the confines of our homes for a short while to get some exercise, fresh air, and a little sunshine on our skin.  [read more …] “The Moon and Venus over Millstreet”

Getting Out and About

Elizabeth sent us a little positivity this week with this view of Millstreet from Clara Mountain as many locals got out and enjoyed beautiful fresh air. A great way to lift the spirits in these days of social isolation which we are all asked to adhere to. It helps no end that the weather seems to have turned and though cool, little rain is forecast for the next week.

As well as the most popular up and down Clara, here in Millstreet we also have  the Clara Loop, Mushera, Comeenatrush, The Duhallow Way (east to west), the Ireland Way (north to south), for the more adventurous, but lots of other areas to walk where it is gentle and safe, like the Town Park, Drishane Road, the Boeing, Tubrid, Donoure, St. John’s Well.

IRD DUHALLOW also have details on a number of walkways in our area:  [read more …] “Getting Out and About”
