Genealogy: Sweeney / Creedon

After a long search I have finally found out where my great grandparents came from i.e. Millstreet and Drishane. I am hoping that someone has some information that coud take me further with my family’s history.

Michael Sweeny was born Millstreet Workhouse on the 25th July 1865. His parents were Margaret Creedon and John Sweeny who shortly after came to live in Brentford, England where they had a further two children, Cornelius (1867) and Margaret (1870), my grandmother.

Another child, Johanna Sweeny, had been born in Cork in 1859 but apart from two entries for her in the 1871/81 census for Brentford, England, I can find nothing else about her although I am sure she married (?Mr Moore) and had children.

John Sweeny’s parents were Denis McSweeny and Ellena Fitzgerald of Drishane.

Margaret Creedon’s (born in circa 1840) parents were Michael Creedon and Margaret Collins of Milstreet.

I would be grateful if anybody has any more information about any of the above. Perhaps I still have relatives in that part of the word. If I have I would love to meet them.

Thank you for your help.

    1. Dear Eileen

Thank you for you reply to my e-mail asking for information regarding my Irish forebears. I think I have done as much as I can online and think the only way forward is to visit Millstreet and Cork. My niece has shown a great interest in her family history and I am hoping we can visit together at some point next year.

Once again thank you for your help. I hope your own research proves fruitful.

  2. My relative was also a Margaret Creedon married to William Mcsweeney. They had a daughter
Anne Mary Mcsweeney born 1869 in Douglas, who married Daniel Kelley and moved from Cork to Somerville Ma in the late 1800s. I saw Sweeney and got excited but thought you might have crossed these names.
    Appreciate any leads

    1. Dear Mary

I am sorry to say that none of the names in my Millstreet family history match the ones in your e-mail except for the name Margaret Creedon, the same name as my great grandmothers.

However, I have recently found out that the Johanna Sweeney (borin in Millstreet)entered as the daughter of John and Margaret Sweeney (nee Creedon)in the 1871 census for England was really Johanna Kelliher. We are now wondering if she was a relative that came to the UK with them from Millstret. If you have any Keliher’s in your Millstreet genealogy I would be interested to hear of them.
