Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a chairde, and welcome to my first report of 2019. I trust you are all well after the highs and lows of the Festive Season, and ready to meet the New Year with lots of hope and new resolutions.
Its starting off well here in Millstreet with the mighty Spring Farm Machinery Show at the Green Glens tomorrow Wednesday January 16th, and continuing on Thursday 17th, running each day from 12 noon to 10pm. All services at the venue will be up and running, and car parking free.
Equestrian events for 2019 at the Green Glens include:
- the Millstreet International Welcome Tour April 3rd-7th,
- the I.M.C.A European Individual Championships July 7th-13th,
- the International Horse Show August 14th-18th,
- the International Horse Trials, August.21st -25th , and
- the Pony Owners Show October 25th -27th .
The whole world around us is opening up after the Christmas Break. And classes and courses and leisure activities there for the taking. Please be on the lookout for something that meet your needs. This Thursday January 17th, we are all invited to light up the Town Park in conjunction with Operation Transformation. Lights will be on and a Carnival atmosphere is guaranteed. Be there, even if only to sit in your car and admire it all.

Millstreet Gramophone Circle will hold their Meeting this Friday night at the Canon O’Donovan Centre starting at 8,15. Presenter Eithne, Boherbue. All welcome.
Set Dancing resumes in Ballydaly Hall on Wednesday nights from 8.30 -10 and all are welcome. The Men’s Shed meet at their premises Macroom Road every Tuesday night and new members welcome. 45 Drive is held at the Canon O’Donovan Centre every Tuesday night starting at 8.30 sharp. All Welcome.
Our lovely Town Park is open again following a closure for the very successful Greyhound Coursing event. And the number at our local Library is 02921920 if you’d like join.
Charity Concert will be held at the Riverside Park Hotel Macroom on Saturday January 19th in aid of Motor Neuron Research.
Vocation Afternoon will be held at the Poor Claire Monastry, College Rd, Cork on February 9th from 2-4.30.
Millstreet Vintage Club AGM took place in the Parish Centre last Thursday Night with a record crowd in attendance,prior to the AGM the Vintage Club presented €500 each to both the Day Care Centre and Millstreet Community Hospital which brought the overall figure collected by the Club to €6,500 over the past 12 months,the Vintage Club are holding a Cars Coffee and Chat Morning in aid of Cork Simon Community at the Wallis Arms Hotel in Millstreet on next Sunday Jan 20th starting at 11.00am your support would be very welcome for a worthy cause,Contact Donie Lucey on 086 8545873 for more details.
The Annual Weigh-In in Cullen started on Monday night last, and 75 people attended. Dr. Pat Casey was there to record the weekly Weigh-In as he has done for over 30 years. The Weigh In continued last night 66 people attended and 196 lbs weight was lost. And from now on they will have a lively Jiving session each night. Not too late for you enlist at 0876955114.
Following a three week break our Lotto draw resumed on Sunday night with the Draw being held at the Mal Paso Bar. Numbers drawn were 4,10,21,23, and the Jackpot was not won. €100 went to Bridget Dineen Drishane View, the Seller was O’Learys and they got €100 sellers prize. €50 went to Catherine Jenks c/o Colemans, €20 to D. Kelleher, Aubane, Jamie Kelleher, c/o Tarrants Bar, Ann Barry, Lackabawn, John Culinane Drishane View, Timmy O’Connell c/o Tom Carroll, Aiden McAulliffe MountLeader, The Higgins Family ,England. There’s work to be done and while we’ll leave the problems of Brexit to those at the top, by all accounts our greatest battle this year will our battle against plastic. It doesn’t seem that long ago since it was first introduced. Perhaps the sixties or seventies. Back then it was the answer to so many of our problems. The granular manure for the land came in strong sealed plastic bags, No dust escaping to the annoyance of the handler and I can remember how, when rinsed out, we collected them for storing everything from extra blankets and other household things, and held them free from moths and any other pests of the time. Bit by bit many other uses were found for this miracle material, and it continued to be a Gods send for many things. Did we ever think that the day would come when plastic would become a killer of so many creatures , even the mighty whales of the deep.
It will take great efforts to right the damage that has been done, and we are all called to play our part in righting the wrongs of the ‘plastic era’.

The proceeds will go to the Tidy Towns Committee,to help them with their great work.and please help them by keeping our towns and approach roads clean and litter free.
The after Christmas flu’s and colds are taking effect at the moment. Please be on the look out for people who may need your help.
