Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1073 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this calm and cloudy Tuesday morning.

Fundraising reached an all-time high here at the weekend when no less than three events were held for the same worthy cause. The late Jerry O Leary fundraising efforts in aid of the Oncology Department of the Cork Universary Hospital opened on Saturday with a coffee morning at the home of his wife Teresa  and her little boy in Rathcoole. Then on Saturday night a monster auction and raffle was held at the Clara Inn with items realising huge prices. This was followed on Sunday afternoon by a monster Vintage run which took off from Drishane Castle. All events only went to show the  high esteem at which trucker, Jerry was  held. A truly outstanding tribute in these recessional times.

I mentioned last week that the Forgotten Maggies would be screened on TG4 tomorrow night,  Wednesday, July 20th  at 9.30 and now I’m reminding you again. Please don’t miss this the Irish Premier of the story of the Laundry Girls and women who suffered so much in silence until their story was told to our own Stephen O Riordan, who Directed and produced the film.It got a standing ovation in New York, and excellent reviews from the Irish Papers as well as the Galway Festival 2009. On TG4 it will be transmitted in English. Starting to-morrow Wednesday night at 9.30.

Also last week I told you that the Astro Turf  committee want all your scrap metal  which will be sold to raise funds to pay the cost. Next Saturday July 23rd is the day and the Co. Council Yard at the Station Rd, is the place. Please root out all your scrap iron be it big or small to aid this drive which aims to turn something that is no good for you into something that is vital for our community. When complete our  courts will be up standard and I fine playing ground for  all to enjoy.

Mass was said for the first time ever at our burying ground beside our parish church yesterday evening. In freezing cold the large crowd gathered , Fr Paddy O Byrne was chief celebrant, aided by Canon  Jack FitzGerald and Fr. Sean Tucker. In his homily Fr Paddy spoke of his joy at saying the Mass adding that from his bedroom window in the West End he could view his own family grave, and recalled the many memories he had of the place all his life. Following the Mass the priests blessed the graves some of which date back to the early 1800s while  the people mingled and looked at the various names ,some who had family ties, others who had not. It is planned to make this an annual event and Canon Jack promised to have the ancient Crufcifix redecorated before new year. Many thanks to our clergy for the wonderful ceremony.
