Competitors from far and wide to compete at sheep shearing event

Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney attended the formal launch of the event yesterday. Humphry O’Riordan, the chairman of the organising committee, said they were delighted to be staging the event, last held in Millstreet in 1981.

“This time round the championships are being held indoors in the best venue in Ireland, if not in Europe, where people will be able to enjoy the shearing and all the other attractions in the comfort of this magnificent arena,” said Mr O’Riordan.

One highlight of the weekend will be the Clik speed shear on the Saturday evening, when some of the world’s elite shearers will compete against the clock to see who is the fastest — and cleanest — shearer. The current Irish record is 17.5 seconds.

A series of family events is also planned. from the Irish Examiner March 14th 2013
